But the second part, Risen 2: Dark Waters, turned out to be an unexpected turn. The developers decided to abruptly change course: dark fantasy was replaced by pirates, muskets, colonial lands, voodoo sorcerers and natives. So when I needed a magic harpoon, I had to make a choice – either join the oppressors, among whom I have long been familiar, or gain the trust of these wild, but surprisingly sincere people. And here voodoo changed everything: this ancient magic is available only to the chosen ones … the chosen friends of the tribe. And I was always not against learning a little witchcraft. On the islands, you quickly understand: whoever you were in the past, you come here like a blind kitten. Everything seems new. Any fortress is impregnable, every merchant is a sly one, every young lady is a mystery. And if you want to succeed, be prepared for difficulties.

For example, I caught a drunk named Jim in the local camp. The guy is a thief, a liar and a sly one. I asked him to teach me some… let’s say, dishonest tricks. And he was like: “Five hundred gold. For the first lesson.” Do you think he revealed some secret to me? Nothing of the sort! He said: “The main thing in our business is to not get caught.” Brilliant, right? And this is just the beginning. If you want to learn how to fight, pay. Master the spear – bring it. Become a master of persuasion – get your wallet ready. Here, you have to pay for everything.
Although it’s easier with equipment: you can always get equipment from defeated enemies. And if you’re lucky, you can collect a couple of parts and craft something truly legendary. Believe me, sometimes this is much better than any lessons or training. Especially if the sword glows with a magical light and scares enemies with its very appearance.

How to Survive on the Islands in Risen 2: Dark Waters
Money slips away. It seems like you’ve just started – and it seems like gold is literally lying under your feet. If you want – go to the ruins, dig up ancient burials, but remember: this is entertainment for those who are not afraid to die a couple of times before noon. Each tomb is full of surprises – bones of the long dead, traps that are activated by the slightest step, gloomy walking dead, spiders the size of a calf, and such large guards who have your name already carved on their shield.
But if you are closer to the craft of a hunter – please. The forest is full of animals, and in each animal there is potential earnings. Skins, claws, teeth, feathers, meat, bones – everything is useful. The main thing is to carry a knife for cutting, a bone saw, an awl, bags … even a cart. But here we were lucky: our travel bag, apparently, is enchanted. No matter how much you shove, it doesn’t crack or swell, as if it were bigger than any warehouse. If only you could put a pick in there, you could mine gold in the caves. Sometimes you come across veins, not much, but for local prices, it’s quite a profit.
There is a more romantic way to earn some extra money – treasure hunting. These islands are filled with treasures, like a holiday pie with raisins. But finding them is not so easy. Without a map, you are just a tramp in the tropics, without a clear goal. But with a map, you are already a hunter. Maps can be exchanged, bought, and often stolen from dead pirates. And believe me, it is better to immediately take a map with a cross – it is easier to navigate the area, and the chances of finding something are higher. I myself, sometimes, ran around the same island five times, trying to understand where the north is by the moss and shadows. And a map is peace, and gold, and ultimately, saving time.

But all these small sources of income pale in comparison to the real treasure – the tasks. Almost every second person here needs help. Someone asks to carry cargo from a wrecked ship, another offers to get rare skins or bones for a fee, a third is looking for someone to carry sacks of sugar to the nearest distillery. Once – carried sugar, twice – brought rum, three – carried rum again. And for all this, by the way, you get paid. Of course, not much, but if you work smart, you can save up for training and equipment.
But there is a shortage of rum here. No joke. It seems to be the tropics, but you can’t find any alcohol with fire. The merchants are empty, the innkeepers – perhaps sour home-brew. On one island I spent the whole day looking for at least a bottle of grog – without success. And this is not just a pleasure. Alcohol here is almost like a healing potion: it lifts your spirit, restores your health, and helps you not to fall in battle. Without it, you’re half dead. On the mainland, they say, potions save you from any trouble. Here, potions are rum, and rum is life.
I’ve heard that in other worlds, adventurers have so much gold that they have nowhere to put it. They say their chests are bursting with coins, but there’s nothing to spend them on. That’s not a threat to us. Here, every copper is worth its weight. You have to pay for training, you have to improve your weapons, armor, buy scrolls, potions, maps. And all this costs a lot. And if you want to survive, you have to work, search, take risks, and, of course, don’t forget about a good flask of good old rum.
The Face of True Magic in Risen 2
On the islands, speech sounds both strange and musical. The Shaganumbi tribe, with whom I had the chance to become great friends, speaks their own language – unusual, but melodic. Instead of the usual “da” they have a short “chi”, female witches are called “kiki”, and they pay almost fanatical attention to the rites, rituals and misty ceremonies of their ancestors. And not without reason: their voodoo is a real battering ram, in comparison with which mainland magic looks like childish tricks. A couple of swings of the doll – and my consciousness already lives in someone else’s body, pushing the poor guy to perform the actions I need. What is amazing is that the “possessed” himself does not even understand how cleverly he was just used. Of course, the matter is not limited to rag figures. Shaganumbi carve rings, weave amulets, cut scepters, and throw curses right in the middle of a fight. They have their own alchemy: it’s hard to get the ingredients, but once you brew a potion, life becomes noticeably easier. For example, here’s what you can brew in their cauldrons:

Such potions have saved my skin more than once and often opened up unexpected opportunities. Without them, I would have had to put all my efforts into training and forget about battles — there simply wouldn’t be enough gold for leveling up. The Akella localization, which we managed to catch a glimpse of, is neat, but the pirate slang in the Russian version is noticeably smoothed out. The dialogues are combed, laid out and varnished. Even the word “cunning” was translated as a calm “dexterity”, although “cunning” or “treachery” would have sounded more honest. The technique expands the audience, but inevitably erases those very rough edges that give Risen 2 a special charm.
The “Moluccas” are a solemn people to the point of naivety, but they are not alien to a sense of humor. Once I complained to my companion Shani, who aroused barely concealed jealousy in Patty, how difficult it was to persuade the inhabitants of Puerto Isabela to fill the ship with water. Shani grinned: “It’s nothing, even a fool can handle it.” I was offended and asked again. “If the fool is the local commandant,” she clarified. And, admittedly, she was right: the old man served us well in this matter.
Pirates also have their own guttural speech. Curses fly through every phrase, threats are worse than the first axes. Anything you might have heard about noble corsairs in cocked hats, robbing the rich for the poor and gallantly bowing to the ladies, boldly throw overboard. Pirates are a motley mix of thieves, swindlers and notorious villains. Bright exceptions are rare – say, Patty and her father – but the bulk of filibusters are not at all the guys with whom you would want to while away an evening. Honestly.
Islands where death lurks behind every bush
Life on the islands is a continuous roulette, where every step promises the unexpected. You walk along a seemingly safe clearing, enjoying the peace, and then – click! – bamboo stakes jump out of the ground: a trap, you can’t tell whether it’s for a wild boar or a traveler. A moment separates you from death: if you manage to jump away – well done, if not – sorry. No one will find the body later anyway: the jungle does not like carrion.
So it is in battle. The leopard presses you to the ground, the ghoul flies up on your shoulders, the alligator slowly chews on the prey. Only speed and ingenuity save you: wave your saber, shoot, throw a coconut or release a tame monkey on the enemy – whatever comes to hand. It’s no easier with “civilized” opponents: they attack in a crowd. Once I had to take a blow from eight masters of the blade at once. It’s good that Shani was nearby.

Companions, especially female companions, brighten up the harsh everyday life of an adventurer. Most often, I took only one companion with me, although the crew on the ship was much larger. And to be honest, I am not a dictatorial commander: in the heat of battle, everyone decides for themselves who and when to cut up.
Since we are talking about the crew, I will say a few words about the ship. For a long time, I did not even have a raft. They would put me on an island – and wait until the random captain regrets me. I got tired of it. After a little clever combination, I got my own little vessel. Since then – complete freedom: I moor where I want, and build a route as my heart desires. Only then did I truly feel like the master of my destiny.
Pros and Cons of Risen 2: Dark Waters
At this point, the story seems to freeze — as if that very bottle with the message, thrown into the raging sea, reaches the shore, but its story is still not finished. A message without a signature, addressed to someone without a name, is more like a travel diary or an impromptu guide to mysterious islands. But in fact, it is much more. It is a portal to a world into which you immerse yourself completely, forgetting that in front of you is just a game. Sometimes the best assessment of a game is not a table with points or a detailed analysis of mechanics. This is the moment when, having written a review, you do not want to put a period. When you are no longer just a player or a reviewer, but a full-fledged participant in what is happening. When, instead of evaluating the graphics and animation, you catch yourself on the fact that you do not care – it is so drawn in. This is what makes Risen 2: Dark Waters special.
This game is not for those who are looking for an ultra-modern picture. It is for those who are looking for an atmosphere. The atmosphere of a salty breeze, hoarse songs in taverns, dangerous islands hiding ancient secrets, and rude but charming pirates ready to follow you to the ends of the earth. Even if the graphics are outdated, the animation sometimes twitches, and the mechanics sometimes seem outdated – all this loses its meaning when you stand on the deck, look into the distance and feel the taste of adventure. It’s like pirate rum – burning, viscous, with a bitter depth. From the first sip you understand: there is no turning back.

The world of Risen 2 is surprisingly alive. It is not just colorful – it is rich. Here, each settlement is filled with stories, each task – with an opportunity to do things your own way. If you want – negotiate, if you want – take by force, if you want – steal. Here you always have a choice, and this makes the game truly yours. Even magic is presented in an unusual way: no fireballs or half-screen staves. Everything is inscribed in a pirate style – with skulls, rituals and ancient spirits. This is an unconventional, but logical addition to an already rich world.
