It first flashed on the oscilloscope screen in 1958, and already in the 60s it began to win the attention of users. But the real turning point was the appearance of Pong in 1971 — a simple but brilliant game from Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari. It was from this moment that its commercial life began, and the game itself forever entered the history of video games.
Since then, it has undergone an amazing evolution — from a simple “tennis for two” to a full-fledged arkanoid, which could be found everywhere: from home PCs to mobile phones. And, despite the simplicity of the gameplay, the essence remained the same — to hit the ball so that it does not fall, and break as many blocks as possible. It sounds easy, but it is seriously addictive.
When a game in this genre appears that shows care for details – smooth and responsive controls, varied levels, interesting mechanics and visual beauty – something more than just an Arkanoid is born. Like, launch it for five minutes – get distracted from the routine, break a couple of bricks, close it and go on with your business. But if you think that “Ricochet” is one of those – get ready to be surprised.
At the start, everything looks peaceful and even relaxing. You choose the appearance of your “beater”, set the difficulty level – and go ahead, to adventure. The first levels seem like child’s play: a calm background in the style of the underwater world, fish swimming back and forth, bricks from which bonuses fall out. Everything is familiar, everything is customary. Those who know the genre will immediately appreciate it – the physics are pleasant, and the color palette pleases the eye, and the levels are built with a fair amount of ingenuity. But this is only a lull before the real immersion. From about the tenth level, everything begins to change. Your gaze increasingly moves to the right side of the screen, where a strange inscription flashes: “Rings are your friends.” Losing one “life” after another, you suddenly realize that collecting these rings is not just desirable, but vital.

But there are not ten or even fifty levels in the game – there are 168 of them. And on each, except the first, five treasured rings are hidden. Sometimes you will be given an extra life, but such cases are rare and truly valuable. The main way to survive is to accumulate points. For every 35 – a new life. One ring is one point, and if you take all five on a level – ten at once. But that’s not all. Somewhere in the background, the game is cunningly calculating your rating: bonuses, style of play, efficiency – and now 500 or even 1000 points are dripping into the account.
From this moment on, the player seems to be disconnected from the surrounding reality. All everyday affairs are paused. Only a basic set of instincts remains in your head: eat, sleep and… don’t forget that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence. All Power-Ups and Game Mechanics in Ricochet
If the number of numbers and game conventions in the previous paragraph scared you a little, don’t worry. The controls here are as simple as can be: everything comes down to moving the mouse left and right and clicking the left button. Theoretically, you can not monitor the rating at all, but then there is a high risk of premature “Game Over”. This is where one of the main charms of “Ricochet” lies – it gives you a choice: if you want to play relaxed – go ahead, if you want to fight for the perfect result – get ready for the challenge.
The game is distinguished not only by its excellent level architecture (it is obvious that the developers were stuck in such entertainment for more than one evening), but also a well-thought-out set of unexpected “surprises” divided into three main groups.

The first is purely positive. Here you can find many useful power-ups:

Protective shield – temporarily saves from any contact;

Extra life – gives a second chance in case of failure;

Magnet – holds the ball on the platform for accurate aiming;

Solvent ball – destroys everything except metal structures;

Rocket launcher and pistol – instantly finish the level after collecting all the rings;

Hand bombs – are activated as you move and help clear dangerous areas.
The second group includes opponents. And even though there are only three of them (exploding bombs, platform and ball shrinkers), they are the ones that often ruin the whole situation. The rest of the elements on the field are neutral – and this is their trick: in one situation they can help, and in another – they will turn into a trap.
For example, the effect of cloning the ball – on the one hand, it’s a cool thing: more balls – higher chances to clear the field and get a bonus for speed. But if there are unpunched rings left, it’s easy to lose control. Or here’s a ball that starts shooting indiscriminately – sometimes this is a real salvation, and sometimes – just chaos. Add to this slowdowns, accelerations, powerful bombs and other crazy elements – all this turns the levels into real puzzles that you want to go through again and again until you achieve the perfect result.
The destructibility of objects is also pleasing. Some bricks give in with the first hit, others can withstand five hits. The moving targets are especially interesting: sometimes these are entire columns of figures, sometimes quickly elusive obstacles, hitting which you feel real satisfaction. The speed of the ball by default remains constant (on “easy” it crawls like a snail), but at high levels everything is compensated by the complexity: mixed types of objects, rings that appear literally for a split second, and endless explosions. In some places it is really difficult to hit where you need to at the right moment.
But there are also some flies in the ointment. The first serious minus is that at the most difficult stages a lot depends not on your skills, but on banal luck. One bad explosion or an obstacle that flies too close – and you start over. The second minus is only four animated backgrounds and corresponding sets of elements. It seems beautiful, but by the middle of the game it starts to repeat. And the third is the music. It is not annoying, but it does not set a special mood: simple, slightly monotonous melodies, which you want a little more variety.
Is Ricochet Worth Playing in 2025?
Ricochet confidently holds the lead in its niche — and deservedly so. In the Arkanoid genre, it has almost no real competition. Calling the previous version — Ricochet Xtreme from the same developers — such is not entirely fair (although it is worth trying: there are fewer bonuses, but as many as 170 levels — enough for a long time).

True, a potential rival is already looming behind the scenes — BreakQuest, still in beta status. And although it looks stylish and pleases the eye with psychedelic visuals, and also offers a fresh look at classic mechanics, Ricochet has already taken its place at the top. Now it simply has no equal.
