When Return to Castle Wolfenstein appeared in 2001, the military shooter genre was still quite modest – there were so few games about World War II that you could count them on your fingers. Therefore, a return to the Wolfenstein universe turned out to be more than timely. This game stood out from the others in that it was able to mix historical grounds with elements of mysticism and fantasy. Here, sabotage operations and secret Nazi laboratories were combined with occult rituals, experiments in resurrecting the dead, and the creation of super soldiers. And what is surprising is that this entire seemingly absurd cocktail did not destroy the atmosphere, but on the contrary, made it even more attractive and exciting.

Fortunately, Gray Matter did not dare to simply “modernize” the old classic and leave it unchanged. Only the main touches have survived from the original: the name of the main character, the ability to restore health with food (fortunately, no longer dog food), the search for hidden treasures and, of course, hordes of Fritzes, Hans and Obersturmbannführers ready to meet the player in the most unexpected places.
The calendar still shows 1943, the height of World War II. The priorities of the Nazi command remain the same – the creation of an army of ideal supersoldiers is more important than any atomic projects. Reichsfuehrer SS Himmler himself has completely lost touch with reality: he seriously imagines himself a descendant of Henry I, the founder of the Saxon dynasty, and, driven by this madness, sends his troops into the darkest adventures.

Two SS units, the Department of Paranormal Research and the Department of Special Projects, are working on the creation of “Über Soldat”. The former are digging in old tombs, the latter are trying to combine living flesh with mechanics. Agent Blazkowicz from the Secret Operations Office, who has been out of work for too long, will have to figure out what unites them.
This is where the wildest part of the story begins. The Third Reich becomes fertile ground for the writers’ fantasies: on the hero’s path there will be not only disciplined soldiers and guards with an iron bearing, but also creepy experiments – from monstrous “brain jars” to the revived undead living in damp crypts. It seems that anything can be expected further – even Martians, who will suddenly turn out to be guilty of the fact that Henry the First lay in his grave not alone, but in the company of “consumer goods” from another planet.

And so, instead of something truly fresh, we are greeted by the usual zombies and soldiers who speak German so badly that it would be easier to leave them mute altogether. Apparently, the developers’ desire for caricature was stronger than common sense. The result was a set of templates where the “German accent” sounds as ridiculous as phrases from old action movies, like the legendary “Sew up in time, comrade?” from Wesley Snipes.
Soldiers who chatter with a noticeable pronunciation defect are more likely to make you smile than to immerse you in the atmosphere of the Third Reich. Germans who hear something like this will clearly find it difficult to contain their irritation at such a parody. Particularly funny are the scenes with a drunk soldier who yells “Ya-a, ya-a, ya-a!”, as if waiting for a continuation about “… and a bottle of rum.” Even carefully written notes lose their credibility without an authentic touch. It would be much more effective if all these phrases were voiced by real native speakers, and not by actors from a local theater parodying Germans at the level of a student skit.
Unfortunately, such “little things” coupled with mediocre stereo sound on the Q3 engine noticeably spoil the overall impression. Especially if you remember how well Undying and AvP 2 handled the atmosphere. But it’s worth admitting: this is almost the only serious weakness of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The videos with wooden generals are also not brilliant, but live battles compensate for almost everything.

The Gestapo and other enemies please with an unexpectedly decent intelligence. They know how to find their way, climb ladders, return grenades back and even hide behind corners to reload. It’s much more interesting to watch than the wooden enemies from old films, where the Germans were just extras. Yes, it’s far from ideal, but it’s already nice to see that the opponents are at least trying to think.
Against this background, the main character, BJ Blazkowicz, although not a shining example of intelligence, carries around an impressive arsenal. A Luger, two Colts, a Thompson, a captured MP40, several rifles, grenades, dynamite, experimental guns like the Venom Gun and Tesla, a flamethrower for beauty, and, of course, a good old knife for close combat. And that’s not all – five Panzerfausts somehow fit in his pockets. All you can do is laugh, imagining how the hero manages to move with such a load.
For those who are most voracious, there are stationary machine guns on the map. They instantly crush enemy helmets and do not require ammo. It’s just a pity that this is the only element of the environment that you can interact with. Unlike Red Faction, where walls collapsed and corridors were laid out by explosions, here everything is made of monolithic “alien concrete”. A couple of lonely barrels that just beg to be shot do not save the situation.
The developers at least made sure that the player does not look for interactive elements at random: doors, stairs and destructible walls are highlighted. But it still feels like there are too few options. The atmosphere is strong, but the flexibility of the levels is clearly not enough.
Bugs and glitches in the Wolfenstein shooter
Our hero, despite everything, does not lose his presence of mind and manages to find something to do even among the gloomy and unfriendly scenery. With a heavy load on his back, he is still able to jump and even run short distances. Of course, stamina – this annoying parameter – limits his capabilities. But unlike most games, here it is not annoying: it is used rarely and quite appropriately.

There are other “little things” that remind us of the laws of nature and the weaknesses of the human body. Among them:

a slight unsteadiness in the steps of a sniper, who, it seems, would not mind looking into a bottle;
-
a noticeable shaking of the sight after a hit, accompanied by a hated red haze;
-
the signature dispersion of bullets, especially in the old MP40: you aim straight, and they fly anywhere.
And everything would be fine, but death from a shot in the leg from a sniper rifle is hardly in anyone’s favor. Perhaps we can write it off as the developers’ sleepless nights or the appearance of “death lumps” with a broken balance – sounds like an official excuse. But why you can’t peek out from behind a corner and shoot is still a mystery to me. Apparently, Blazhkovich really isn’t very stable.
Of course, we could also go over other oddities: the character calmly overcomes barbed wire fences, losing a couple of virtual organs in the process; the engine doesn’t always cope with open spaces; and enemies sometimes start spinning in place like a top. But today I’m too peace-loving to find fault with this.
Multiplayer Features
Even a short test of the multiplayer mode has already shown that the levels here are thought out to the smallest detail, and the character models are made in such a way that they are easy to distinguish not only by appearance, but also by role. Team interaction is felt from the first minutes – tracking allies and on-screen prompts eliminate the need to shout into the voice chat something like “Kolya, where have you been?!”, turning the game into a more streamlined and exciting experience.

There are four roles to choose from: soldier, engineer, medic and lieutenant. The soldier, in fact, plays the role of “cannon fodder” and is not very impressive, and the engineer seems underestimated – his capabilities are limited to defusing dynamite and throwing explosive toys. A completely different matter is the medic, who runs around with a syringe, generously distributes first aid kits and is able to literally pull the team out at a critical moment. But the lieutenant stands out especially – a character with the ability to call in an airstrike or unexpectedly supply a squad with ammunition. It is these classes that make the game truly diverse.
Now imagine all this in the setting of the first thirty minutes of Saving Private Ryan, only with the ability to choose any side in the conflict. The picture turns out to be exciting, even a little cinematic. Of course, it is too early to draw conclusions – time will tell how deep and popular the multiplayer will be. But the hint from the developers is clear: it is unlikely to be possible to do without parallels with Counter-Strike. There is only one thing left – to reach the level of eSports popularity.
