After a short break, 2K and HB Studios are bringing golf to the digital field again, this time with PGA TOUR 2K23. After a year off, the developers are back with an ambitious goal: to create the most intense and detailed game in the series in the last decade. HB Studios continues to develop the franchise that began with The Golf Club, and now this is the fifth game in the series.

The new part has improved a lot: the developers took into account the comments of players and added more depth and realism. However, they have not yet managed to completely get rid of the legacy of past mistakes. And most importantly, the customization system still suffers from the active presence of microtransactions, which significantly holds back the game’s potential and prevents it from becoming a truly outstanding golf simulator.

PGA Tour 2K23 uses the same default control scheme that many people know from other golf simulators: to swing, you pull the right stick of the controller down, and then quickly move it up. It all sounds logical – simulating the movement of a club. But it is in this “up” that the whole catch lies. The trajectory of the shot depends on how accurately you catch the moment: too fast a swing and the ball goes left, hesitate and it goes right. The mechanics are quite realistic, but at times – unbearably capricious.

For me, this was a real test. I turned on a bunch of auxiliary options: automatic alignment, visual cues, improved swing stabilization. I hoped that they would at least make the swing predictable. But, alas, even on the “second from the bottom” difficulty level, the feeling that I am not in control of the shot did not go away. Sometimes, after a dozen successful training attempts, I would miss at the most inopportune moment — and it would drive me crazy. The swing would cease to be part of the game and become something like a roulette, where you hope for luck.

It was especially unpleasant that even turning on the auxiliary functions did not solve all the problems. Among them:

• Swing Calibration — helps to calibrate the swing, but still requires precision;
• Swing Path Assist — shows the direction of the strike, but does not save from timing errors;
• Tempo Feedback — analyzes the rhythm of the swing, but does it too strictly;
• Vibration Cues — prompt the moment of impact with vibration, but sometimes work with a delay.

That’s why the news that an alternative scheme with three clicks was added to the game was like a breath of fresh air for me. At the request of players, HB Studios implemented the classic mechanics: you select the force of the strike and press the button twice to adjust the accuracy. This is a system that has been familiar since the golf games of the early 2000s — simple, clear, time-tested. However, even here the developers decided to “complicate”: first you hold the button to set the force, and then you need to press it twice — for accuracy. It would seem that everything is simple, but even such a system feels a little overloaded. As if it was redesigned just to be different.

This is the second game from HB Studios under the wing of 2K Sports — a large publisher that always focuses on a wide audience. Therefore, I expected that PGA Tour 2K23 would be much more friendly to beginners. But, in fact, the transition from PGA Tour 2K21 does not feel like a step towards accessibility. Yes, the game has become richer visually, and there are more modes and functions, but the controls still scare off beginners with their exactingness.

I gave both schemes a chance — analog and “three-click”. I tried, experimented, and eventually… I went back to the good old stick. Yes, it’s unpredictable. Yes, it drives you crazy. But it has a sense of physics and realism. Or maybe I’m just stubborn – who knows.

How Archetypes and Skills Work in PGA Tour 2K23 Career Mode

PGA Tour 2K23 can seem like a pretty demanding game, especially at first. But underneath this apparent complexity lies a well-thought-out system that relies heavily on personalization and adaptation to the player’s style. Already at the stage of creating a golfer in the MyPlayer mode, you are faced with an important choice: one of five archetypes, each of which determines how your character will feel on the course.

For example, the Powerhouse archetype allows you to hit the ball over huge distances, which, at first glance, gives a huge advantage. But power comes at a price: such a golfer is not in the best shape when it comes to accuracy, and working on the greens becomes a real headache. I chose Woodsman – “Forester” – not because it sounds cool, but because I often miss shots and send the ball anywhere but the fairway. This archetype helps you get out of difficult areas, be it rough or sand traps, and gives you a chance to not give up even when things don’t go according to plan. Plus, it’s nice to know that you can change archetypes for free — the game doesn’t punish you for experimenting.

This is where HB Studios’ signature style really shines. They didn’t just add customization for the sake of it — they created a system in which each archetype has its pros and cons, pushing you to make an informed choice and tailor the game to yourself. Thanks to the Ranger, I don’t feel like another bad hit is a death sentence. Sometimes, even in a seemingly hopeless situation, you can keep up the steam. These moments give you confidence and make the game truly come alive. The same philosophy applies to the rest of the career mode. However, outside of archetype selection, the system doesn’t work as smoothly. The experience points you get for participating in tournaments do not directly improve your stats — like in most sports games or RPGs. Instead, each new level brings one skill point, which can be spent on unlocking or enhancing certain abilities.

But it’s not that simple. Most skills don’t work all the time – they are tied to the game situation. Some are activated only in moments of failure: say, if you miss several times in a row, the system will “take pity” on you and activate a bonus. But as soon as you correct the game, this skill disappears. Others work the opposite – they support you only when everything is going smoothly. If you fail, the bonus disappears. As the character develops, skills become more “patient”: they activate faster and last longer, but you need to get to this point.

This approach gives the game depth, but at the same time it can be confusing for beginners. You have to not only learn to play well, but also adapt to constantly changing conditions. This is not a classic leveling system, where “+5 to the power of the blow” automatically makes you better. It’s all about context, your form, your streak of good or bad shots – and that’s what makes PGA Tour 2K23 both fun and unpredictable.

Is PGA Tour 2K23 Too Difficult for Casual Players?

What frustrates me most is not the game itself, but how much time I have to spend discussing its annoying little details. Because once you start a match in PGA Tour 2K23, all of that — the interface roughness, the overloaded menus, the confusing parameters — fades into the background. At that point, all that remains is golf. Real, honest, hard golf. For example, I spent more than one excruciating round on the legendary hills of Riviera Country Club, and believe me, every green there is a separate test of patience.

And yet, despite all this pain, the mechanics of the swing itself — when you calculate the force, angle, direction, and then send the ball flying with perfect timing — can be surprisingly pleasant. Sometimes even thrillingly triumphant. It’s the feeling when the ball rolls into the hole exactly at the moment when you absolutely need it — to overtake your opponent in the standings. For such moments, you come back again. But the path to these moments is thorny. Swing management is sometimes ruthless here — misses happen more often than you’d like, even after dozens of attempts. And the complex system of equipment, perks, and progression doesn’t make life easier: at some point, you’re fighting the menu more than the wind on the course.

Here are the problems I encountered most often:

• The timing of the shot requires almost perfect execution — the slightest mistake leads to a fatal miss;
• Experiments with equipment are confusing and time-consuming;
• The game doesn’t let you save manually — every step is recorded automatically, there’s no chance to replay;
• You pay for disabling complex mechanics with slow leveling.

Perhaps I’m just not the kind of player this series is designed for. I’m not a newbie: I played a decent amount of PGA Tour 2K21, and, to be honest, I don’t remember having such problems with my swing. It was only later that I realized what the catch was — when I looked into the settings and saw that I had disabled the swing timing at some point. Apparently, my nerves gave out at that moment, and I decided that calmness was more important than XP bonuses. The problem is that the game is now online by default — thanks to the integration with VC, every hit is saved immediately, and it is impossible to go back and replay a failure. Everything is recorded immediately, as if you were taking a golf test in front of cameras.

And so I am faced with a choice. Either accept it and disable the timing, allowing myself to play for fun, without chasing after leveling up. Or admit that PGA Tour 2K23 is my personal Elden Ring. Magnificent, stylish, technically flawless … but in some ways too hardcore. It’s not every evening that you want to fight the game like you do with life. Sometimes you just want to hit the ball for fun — and hit it.
