The plot of Persona 3 Reload remains true to the original. We still play as a teenager who moves to the coastal town of Tatsumi Port Island to start school at Gekkoukan High School. From the moment he arrives, things are a little strange: he is immediately sent to the dorm, where he meets a mysterious boy who offers to sign a contract. The protagonist signs without asking any questions, as if it were normal, and soon meets two girls, one of whom calmly carries a gun. But this doesn’t seem to bother anyone too much.

It soon turns out that these girls are not ordinary students. They are part of Team S.E.E.S., a squad of schoolchildren who fight dangerous creatures known as Shadows at night. It’s all about a phenomenon called the Dark Hour, a mysterious period of time that begins every day at midnight. Ordinary people literally “freeze” at this time, but the Shadows get complete freedom of action. It is because of them that people begin to suffer from strange psychological ailments, including apathetic syndrome, which turns cheerful teenagers into weak-willed shells. The main character, as it turns out, is also not an ordinary guy. He has the ability to summon a Persona – a manifestation of inner strength, capable of using magical abilities in battle. So he becomes a full-fledged member of S.E.E.S. and begins to live on two fronts: during the day – studying, homework, school days, and at night – Tartarus, a giant tower filled with monsters and dangers.

Those who hoped that Persona 3 Reload would offer new storylines will have to moderate their expectations. This is a remake of the original Persona 3, and not its expanded version FES. The game completely lacks the epilogue of The Answer, as well as the optional female version of the main character from Persona 3 Portable. For many fans, this was certainly not a tragedy – especially considering that The Answer was far from everyone’s cup of tea. Interestingly, hints of this epilogue were found in the game files, so it cannot be ruled out that it will appear as a separate DLC in the future.

The plot of Persona 3 was hard to ruin — it was the game’s strong point from the very beginning. And fortunately, it was not touched in the remake: the story is still captivating, but the project has undergone a serious visual transformation. The videos were completely redrawn, the streets and districts of the city have now come to life in full 3D, and the hero models look modern and resemble the characters from Persona 5. The developers seem to have taken the “five” as a reference point — and this only benefited the game. In the original, many locations were just static images, but now you can freely move around them in third person: run along the school corridors, look into a cafe for a part-time job, go to the police station for equipment. Even mini-maps have been added to all zones — previously, such luxury was only in Tartarus. Everything looks integral and organic, there is no feeling that the old game was simply covered with a beautiful facade. It seems that this is how Persona 3 should have always looked.

Free movement adds life to the social part of the game. It’s one thing to click on conventional locations, as it was before, and quite another to meet a friend right in the school corridor when you stopped by the pharmacy for potions on the way. Communication began to feel more alive and natural. Wanted to hang out – looked at the phone, found a message and immediately moved to the desired point. Although the social connections themselves remained without any special changes: unlike Persona 5, leveling up here does not give new abilities or items, but only affects the bonuses when merging persons. But these bonuses are very useful, and the scenes with friends themselves are often pleasing – they are funny, warm, sometimes even touching. Tartarus and Combat Evolution in Persona 3 Reload

As in the original, the school year here is limited in time, and every day is a choice. How to spend your precious time? You can meet with friends and strengthen relationships with them, or you can take care of yourself: increase courage, erudition or charm to open access to new places and characters. During the day, you can walk around the school yard, read in the library or talk to an elderly couple in a bookstore. But in the evening, other opportunities open up: drop in at karaoke to become bolder, get a part-time job in a cozy cafe or arrange a night visit to a burger joint. And only at night do the gates to Tartarus open – a gloomy tower where you will fight with shadows and serious tests before fights with bosses. In the old version of the game, Tartarus was more of a test of patience: monotonous floors, boring passages, mandatory visits only for the sake of leveling up and preparing for the next battles. In the remake, the tower’s architecture remains almost the same – a series of identical corridors and stairs, where you can either cut through hordes of shadows or deftly bypass them, aiming immediately at mini-bosses and chests with valuable trophies. But the key changes occurred not with the location itself, but with the combat system.

The battles have become much more dynamic and vibrant. The main mechanics are still the same: when you encounter a new enemy, you have to experiment – someone is vulnerable to fire, someone to ice or electricity. Find a weakness – the enemy falls unconscious. And if you knock down the entire group – you can carry out a powerful joint attack and inflict huge damage. But now there is a new system inspired by Baton Pass from Persona 5: if one of the heroes stuns the enemy, he can pass the turn to another team member. This allows you to build a whole chain of blows to weak spots and literally mow down enemies in one round. This is especially helpful in cases where one character does not have the required element, while the other does. The battles in the remake have become not only more spectacular, but also much more tactical. Instead of routine, there is improvisation and team play, where every move can be turned into a spectacular feint. Persona 3 Reload has not just refreshed the mechanics – it has breathed passion and drive into the old battles.

After you defeat the second story boss (or rather, a whole pair: the Emperor and Empress), the game presents a new gameplay surprise – theurgy. These are powerful skills that can be activated for each team member, but first you will have to try a little: a new scale appears next to the heroes’ portraits, and to fill it, you need to perform actions specific to a specific character. For Yukari, for example, this is healing allies – the more often she takes care of the team, the sooner she will be able to deliver a powerful blow with the wind element. Mitsuru, on the contrary, must shower enemies with negative statuses to unlock her ice attack. Even Fuuka, who technically does not fight, has theurgy – as a navigator, she can study the weaknesses of enemies, and when the indicator is full, she buffs the entire group, enhancing attack, defense, accuracy and evasion. At the moment of activation, each of the characters gets a spectacular mini-scene – and even routine clearing of Tartarus floors suddenly takes on new colors.

In addition to major changes, Persona 3 Reload is full of little things that significantly increase comfort. The same tasks from Elizabeth have now become more convenient: you no longer need to check the calendar while waiting for the right date. And the prize cards that drop after battles give even more bonuses – this is an important source of money and experience, especially at the start. But, perhaps, the most impressive thing is the redesigned interface: stylish, dynamic, as if borrowed from Persona 5. It is not surprising that screenshots of the menus instantly flew across social networks.

And for Russian-speaking players, there is a special reason to rejoice – for the first time in the history of the series, the game received an official localization. And this is not a formality, but a full-fledged translation with soul: the lines sound lively, the jokes are successfully adapted, and online correspondence with Maya evokes a sincere smile. Of course, there were some minor flaws – for example, “Hang.” instead of “The Hanged Man” can be a bit confusing, but otherwise the work is done at a high level. It’s especially nice to see translated even those elements where you wouldn’t normally expect localization – for example, the text that pops up on the phone screen during a call. The characters, their skills, dialogues, cutscenes – everything is in Russian, and it almost feels like a new chapter in the history of the series.

Persona 3 Reload is not an attempt to rethink the classics, but a careful and respectful return to one of the most important parts of the series. The developers did not throw out or rewrite the plot, did not break the gameplay beyond recognition. Instead, they focused on making the familiar game more modern and comfortable for a new generation of players.

The main thing that catches the eye is, of course, the graphics. Everything is now in full 3D, old videos with a “soap” resolution have been replaced by high-quality cutscenes, and the interface has become much more pleasant and readable. The combat system has received several improvements, and fighting is now really more exciting. There are small but pleasant innovations that were so lacking in the original. All this makes the gameplay a little more cheerful and lively.

However, Tartarus has remained the same. It still cannot be called an interesting place – the structure of the dungeon has not undergone serious changes. To make it truly enjoyable, the game would have to be remade from scratch, perhaps in the vein of Persona 5. But even so, Reload feels like the best incarnation of the third part – especially now that fans can count on a Russian translation.
