For some reason, many remarkable and memorable sites of battle glory, like the plague town and the military base, were never “revived” or brought back to life. It’s disheartening to see how the suggested order for exploring these locations is presented, as it doesn’t do justice to their significance.

Painkiller was slowly fading away into obscurity. Everything released after the Battle out of Hell expansion felt like a heavy club driving the brand deeper into the ground, diminishing its once-great legacy. Titles like Overdose and Resurrection were of such poor quality that even the most passionate fans began to look upon Recurring Evil with a sense of indifference and disappointment. Painkiller was quietly crossing to the shores of Styx, becoming a source of mockery and ridicule along the way, losing the respect it once commanded in the gaming community.

Yet, a spark of light has appeared! The talented creators from People Can Fly, now rebranded as Farm 51, are working on… no, not a new sequel. Just a remake. Built on the familiar and nostalgic Unreal Engine 3.

While this isn’t strictly a remake, the developers have poured their hearts into making it feel fresh and engaging. The storyline, for instance, picks up right where the original duology left off, allowing fans to dive deeper into the narrative. Daniel Garner, a relentless slayer of the undead, finds himself sitting despondently amidst a sea of corpses in Limbo, grappling with the profound sorrow of losing his beloved wife, Catherine.

In his moment of despair, Death unexpectedly approaches him, presenting an offer that is simply too tempting to refuse. “Here’s a remarkable weapon, the ‘Soul Catcher.’ Just wander around for a bit, gather seven thousand souls, and I’ll return your cherished wife to you on a silver platter. It’s all entirely above board, I swear on my tricorn hat!” As if the situation weren’t complicated enough, the cunning Eve suddenly appears, insisting on joining him in this harrowing quest. With limited options at his disposal, Daniel realizes he must seize this opportunity. Gripping his new weapon tightly, he steels himself and embarks on yet another daunting adventure through the familiar yet eerie realms of his past, determined to reclaim what he has lost.

There are only a handful of these, just fourteen levels altogether. Four of them are dedicated to bosses, so they might not truly count in the grand scheme of things. That leaves us with only ten levels, which feels quite limited—very limited, in fact. Some levels have been transformed almost beyond recognition. It’s as if I’ve been here before, yet the areas have been so beautifully revamped that they now appear entirely different and fresh. Others feel like they haven’t changed at all, still showcasing the same familiar textures and shapes that I remember.

For some reason, many of the standout and memorable locations from past battles, like the haunting plague-ridden city or the heavily fortified military base, were not “brought back” into this new iteration.

The sequence in which the locations are presented is rather disappointing. At first, the game bursts with thrilling excitement and a wild sense of bloody joy, as enemies rush in close, swinging axes and swords with reckless abandon. However, as players progress into the latter half, soldiers armed with firearms begin to emerge, drastically altering the overall atmosphere and shifting it toward a darker, more somber tone.

Even though Daniel isn’t as quick or agile as before, the sheer abundance of ammunition keeps him in the fight. There’s so much gear at his disposal that it almost feels like the number of enemies has diminished, creating a strange sense of imbalance. Shotguns, nail guns, and rocket machine guns—these familiar instruments of death are plentiful throughout this chaotic landscape. Yet, they seem to be used more for variety than out of necessity, making the experience feel slightly less intense. Moreover, we can’t forget the notorious “Pain Reliever,” a meat grinder staff topped with a flying projectile that adds a unique flair to combat. Its grotesque design and deadly capabilities reflect the game’s dark humor, providing a brief moment of levity amidst the chaos.

There’s also a new, ominously infamous weapon called the Soul Catcher, which essentially fires circular saw blades. What’s special about it is that its alternate mode doesn’t require any resources to be used: it shoots an emerald beam from the barrel, absorbing the souls of opponents and allowing you to dominate their will. Despite the spectacle and fresh approach, the weapon’s power leaves much to be desired – it’s unable to radically change the difficulty level. As a result, the overall sense of challenge in the game has noticeably weakened.

Thanks to a number of minor adjustments, surviving in the game world has become much less tense. The tension that used to make players clench their fists in despair has disappeared – now the gameplay does not require any special endurance or tactical flexibility. Such simplification may disappoint those who strive for a rich and intense gaming experience. However, the initial doubts about the performance of Unreal Engine 3 turned out to be in vain: the graphics please the eye with rich detailing, enhanced by competently implemented visual effects. True, in some moments the contrast may seem excessive, slightly distracting from the overall immersion in the atmosphere of the game.

Certain places are just excessively dark—almost to a fatal degree—but such situations are infrequent and can usually be weathered without too much trouble. The sounds of gunshots, explosions, and monstrous roars are clear; everything here is executed well and impressively. Yet, the true gem lies in the soundtrack. The high-quality thrash-groove riffs blend so naturally with the on-screen chaos that you only truly notice them when they fade away. The last significant addition was meant to be the co-op mode, but unfortunately, it missed the mark entirely. While cooperative play exists, it might have been better to have left it out altogether.

The new Tarot cards, which adhere to a system reminiscent of the original, can’t be unlocked during partner play. Bosses collapse almost instantly, and regular monsters barely register as challenges. Even if one of you steps away for a relaxing cup of tea and ultimately meets your demise, resurrection occurs promptly without interrupting the flow of the session.

The sole attempt to increase the difficulty in co-op comes from the skeletons that rise from about every third defeated enemy. However, this clearly falls short of creating a genuine threat for Daniel and Eva. Multiplayer, in stark contrast, feels completely lifeless; the familiar modes are rather uninviting, and the servers are essentially deserted, leaving players yearning for a more engaging experience.

Painkiller: Hell & Damnation isn’t without its shortcomings. It feels a bit brief, and the variety of levels could certainly use some enhancement. Additionally, the cooperative mode seems somewhat unnecessary, while the gameplay itself is noticeably simplified compared to its predecessors. Nevertheless, Painkiller: Hell & Damnation remains highly attractive, boasting impressive visuals, adrenaline-fueled action, and an incredibly affordable price tag. At just ten dollars on Steam, this bundle of concentrated intensity is undeniably worth every penny spent.

We can only hope that this remake or sequel generates enough revenue for the developers, paving the way for Daniel Garner’s next thrilling adventure. Many players are eager for this to happen, as Farm 51 appears to possess the capability to restore Painkiller to its rightful place at the pinnacle of mindless, action-packed shooters. The potential for exciting new content and experiences is immense, and the gaming community is ready for more chaotic fun.
