Murderous Pursuits is a fresh attempt to breathe new life into an old, but in its own way brilliant idea: a group of players hunt each other right among an unsuspecting crowd. It all resembles an elegant killers’ ball, where it is important not only to hit accurately, but also not to give yourself away ahead of time.
Players blend into the environment, watch, wait for the right moment and… act. Not many people are familiar with the format, because there were few games of this kind, and almost all of them were from the same developers. It all started with The Ship, then there was the crazy Bloody Good Time, after that – Assassin’s Creed multiplayer, and even an attempt to re-release that very The Ship. And now it’s Murderous Pursuits’ turn.
These projects have always found a response among stealth fans – after all, this is not just an action game, but a game of acting, endurance and bluff. True, technical problems often surfaced behind the scenes, but it was in this genre that even bugs often became part of the fun chaos.

The story of The Ship is almost a tragedy. The game was released in 2006, when Steam was still something strange and incomprehensible, and digital distribution seemed exotic. It had complex rules, there was no offline mode, but many believed that it was the distribution form that finished off the project. Players simply weren’t ready. After some time, the same developers tried again – Bloody Good Time was released. Almost the same idea, the same Source engine, but it lived even less. Then Ubisoft was blamed: they said the company released the game and forgot about it, without bothering to advertise it properly. It’s funny that a few years later Ubisoft actually took the same ideas and built them into Assassin’s Creed multiplayer – this time with much greater success. Later, The Ship was revived. New developers bought the rights, re-released the game, and fans happily threw themselves into nostalgia. Apparently, this warm welcome inspired the creators to try again – under a new name.
This is how Murderous Pursuits was born. Given the whole background, you even want to sympathize with it in advance. Everything is familiar in it – hunting, camouflage, confusing cat and mouse. Only now everything is in a cartoon-Victorian style: salons, factories, theaters … and, of course, a ship – hello from the original The Ship. There is always a crowd on the map. People chatting, giggling, drinking, looking at exhibits. Infiltrate, pretend, act carefully. There are also guards, and they are not asleep – any strange behavior, and you will be immediately arrested. If you try to kill the target in front of them, there is a high probability that they will simply run away, and you will be left with nothing.

Each game is a continuous cycle of hunting and survival. You are both a hunter and a potential prey. Delay — and it’s not you who’s tracking you, but you. If you’re killed — no big deal, the game will find you a new target… and a new pursuer. It’s a frantic cycle where everything happens at lightning speed: you just threw a dagger at a defenseless gentleman, and now you’re lying dead at the entrance. An extra move — and you’re exposed. Ideally, of course, your target behaves like an extra — leisurely strolling, not running, not killing in public, not waving his arms, and not dancing on the dead. He can stand by the window, pretending to look at the interior, or join in the conversation. There are even special “points of interest” for this — the developers clearly knew what they were doing.

Is Murderous Pursuits Worth Playing in 2025?
There are games where you don’t need to eat, heal, or worry about survival – pure gameplay without unnecessary worries. Murderous Pursuits is one of them. The main thing here is to change weapons. And not just for the sake of variety: each new murder weapon brings more points, and reuse reduces the value. So, to win, you need not just to score frags, but to do it stylishly and creatively, each time in a new way.
The game feels alive, bold, very stylish and noticeably simpler than its ancestor The Ship. But, alas, this did not save it from the same curse. Online is almost dead: the peak is around a hundred players, and only on holidays. Fortunately, the developers have foreseen such a sad fate. If there are not enough people in the lobby, their place is taken by bots. You can start a match even completely alone, and along the way, live opponents will catch up with you. The system is flexible and works well – perhaps it is what prevents the project from completely sliding into oblivion.

Why did it happen? Perhaps it is because even in a simplified form the game requires involvement. Here you can’t just jump into a match and start shooting at everyone. You need to understand who your target is, where to get a new weapon, how to disguise yourself and when to strike. And even if there are hints, tutorials, and all sorts of guides – it is still not a typical reflex shooting. And many, as practice shows, are too lazy to delve into even the most basic mechanics if they go slightly beyond the usual. Add to this the almost complete lack of marketing. Yes, there was a closed beta, then a short open testing, even some feedback from the community… but the general audience never found out about the project.
And yet, it seems that the main reason why players scattered is a banal lack of content. The idea is cool, the implementation is lively, but it doesn’t manage to keep the player for long. There are few cards, almost no unique abilities, and the customization is scanty. In a couple of hours, you’ve already seen everything the game has to offer. Either you become a fan, or you move on to projects with more content.
