Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor

One uneventful evening, I found myself deciding to check out Amazon’s latest series set in the “Lord of the Rings” universe. I certainly didn’t expect that within just the first minute of this multimillion-dollar “masterpiece,” I would be enthusiastically thanking all the benevolent deities I know for never being a devoted fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, the legendary English author and pioneer of modern fantasy. If I had been a bigger fan, the discomfort from my blazing seat would have been more than enough to create and temper several Rings of Power, leaving me questioning my life choices. In summary, the series was hardly worth my time and was quickly tossed aside, not even meriting a second thought. Instead, I turned my attention to a video game that has captured my interest, which is precisely what this review will delve into today, exploring its engaging story and immersive gameplay.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor emerges as perhaps the last significant multiplatform third-person Action/RPG that truly honors its source material. This game allows players to dive deep into the rich and intricate world of Middle-earth, free from the distractions of contemporary Western ideologies. The talented developers at Monolith Productions have invested an immense amount of effort into this project. They managed to craft a remarkable experience by relying solely on Tolkien’s Legendarium—those drafts and notes that were published after his passing.

The plot of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor begins between the events of the cult trilogies “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”, focusing on the valiant rangers of Gondor. After the fall of Sauron, these brave warriors are called upon to guard the ominous Black Gate of Mordor – a dark and beautiful fortress that stretches for endless miles.

The player will have to get used to the role of Talion, a fearless captain of rangers, whose fate is intertwined with a chain of unexpected and dramatic events. As the development progresses, everything goes to the fact that revenge becomes the main driving force of the narrative, revealing both interesting gameplay and emotional attachment, which has become a calling card of Ubisoft.

I admit, it would be unfair to go into unnecessary details for the sake of those who have not yet had the opportunity to personally play Shadow of Mordor. Therefore, I will limit myself to general observations. Still, it’s impossible not to notice Ubisoft’s influence – its signature style, attention to detail and storytelling are seamlessly woven into the fabric of this dark and epic adventure.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Gameplay

The gameplay of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is expertly crafted from a clever fusion of mechanics found in the earlier Assassin’s Creed titles and the captivating combat of Batman: Arkham Origins. That’s right; you’re not mistaken. This is yet another open-world adventure featuring parkour elements, where players scale towers, gather a variety of treasures, and stealthily—or not—take down groups of foes. However, don’t rush to dismiss this game as just another imitation; the reality is far more intricate. What truly distinguishes this game is an innovative aspect that no Assassin’s Creed title has featured, and it’s unlikely to show up in future installments. I’m referring to the groundbreaking Nemesis system, which assigns orcs unique personalities, complete with their own strengths and weaknesses, along with the ability to learn from and remember the player’s actions.

An Orc killed by accident early in the game can suddenly turn into a crazed stalker (not to be confused with the stalkers from Pripyat) who hunts the player at all times, lurking in the shadows and waiting for the perfect moment to plunge a poisoned dagger into their unsuspecting back. Engaging in a reckless raid on an enemy camp, only to flee in panic, can result in a cascade of harsh insults from green opponents and an alarming increase in their patrols. This peculiar NPC behavior makes for an interesting experience, making it feel like you are fighting creatures that, while despicable and hostile, are hauntingly alive and should never be underestimated or taken lightly, as they possess a surprising level of cunning and awareness.

Shadow of Mordors combat system delivers a quality RPG experience like no other

The combat system in Shadow of Mordor stands out as exceptionally remarkable, as it liberates players from rigid conventions in their approach to taking down orcs. Instead of being confined to a single method, players are encouraged to experiment with character upgrades and a variety of traditional skill sets—such as swordsman, archer, assassin, and mage. Additionally, the introduction of enhancement runes adds an exciting layer. These runes, reminiscent of those found in MMORPGs, boast random attributes, making them intriguing collectibles earned from formidable enemies. This design creates a captivating gameplay cycle: whenever players feel the urge for a fresh enhancement, they must mentally prepare for yet another unpredictable clash. It’s exhilarating!

Moreover, the vibrant spectacle of these intense battles adds to the overall allure of the game. Blood gushes dramatically from defeated foes, outrageous finishers decapitate opponents with flair, and brains scatter in a chaotic explosion. It creates a visceral experience that appeals to anyone who enjoys the thrill of chaos. The sheer visual impact and the adrenaline rush from each encounter are unforgettable. There’s truly no need for further elaboration—just witness it for yourself. It’s absolutely breathtaking and a feast for the eyes!

Reference

It’s important to highlight the references that will undoubtedly thrill fans of this beloved universe. As you wander through the crumbling remnants of the old camp, rest assured you’ll come across the rusted shackles of a prisoner, which tell a haunting tale of both the life and tragic death of the unfortunate soul who wore them. Additionally, when you happen upon a gnawed fish in a dark cave, you’re sure to find yourself grinning at the familiar phrase: “My precious,”.

Why Shadow of Mordor’s Sound Design Still Sets the Standard

The sound quality is a good thing to note. Despite the game not having any truly great music tracks, Shadow of Mordor stands out as the first game in years that sounds absolutely incredible. It’s a bit of a shame that I can’t show it on YouTube, but I hope you’ll take my word for it. When you hear the distant sound of a blade being drawn from its sheath, the quiet whispers exchanged in the night, and the soft patter of rain around you. However, it’s possible that this is just my real imagination, and you may not notice these details at all. I simply can’t help but be happy with my dedicated Asus Strix Soar 7.1 sound card, which makes every sound rich and layered. However, it’s quite depressing that modern developers often neglect sound design, focusing instead on graphics and game mechanics. The sound card market seems to be in decline, and quality audio often falls by the wayside.
