Fending off the demands of work, the post-holiday gift-and-tree apathy completely shuts down all productivity mechanisms, forcing my body into a manual mode of operation. It’s a real challenge to shuffle my feet toward the computer, summon the willpower to send signals to my fingers, and hit the right keys to fill out the digital sheet. To really see what I’m entering, I should probably remember to blink every now and then. And, of course, inhaling some oxygen wouldn’t hurt either to keep my mind alert.

In essence, I felt perfectly at home in Manual Samuel. It resonates with me, though, unlike the protagonist, who has a rather more delicate issue—he’s dead and navigating a world that’s both absurd and oddly relatable. This blend of humor and struggle makes the game a unique reflection of my own post-holiday daze.

After suffering a fatal blow from a truck, affluent slacker Sam stubbornly refuses to accept his grim fate and languish in the torturous job market. To his surprise, Death proves to be equally chaotic and proposes a rather peculiar deal. If Sam can navigate his typical day while manually overseeing every single function in his body, he can continue living among the miserable masses, avoiding the afterlife for just a little longer.

Though concise, the setup promises an entertaining and thought-provoking journey. There’s an undeniable echo of Sir Terry Pratchett here—specifically, a significant nod to his beloved “Mort,” which only heightens the appeal and adds layers of depth. Literary nods in games are always appreciated, especially when the creators draw from genre legends like the “Discworld,” enriching the narrative experience and inviting players to engage with humor and wit.

In truth, the resemblances between the two are few and far between. The humor here lacks creativity and often gravitates toward basic bathroom jokes that feel rather uninspired. At first, a few of these jokes may land well and elicit a chuckle, but their directness and monotonous nature quickly diminish any lasting impact they might have had.

The repetitiveness of the humor is particularly striking and, frankly, a bit exhausting. The game seems to revel in making jokes about the same topics for an uncomfortably long time, appearing to enjoy it far more than the audience does. There’s little justification for building the narrative around a limited set of jokes that run like a heavy, repetitive theme all the way to the final credits. Thus, the main lineup consists of the following acts:

• Death is honing new tricks on its skateboard, pushing boundaries.
• Someone casually tosses around the term “guano” as an insult.
• Another keen observer remarks that Death is quite the guano-skating expert.
• Death mutters “guano” in frustration after a failed kickflip.
• Satan uses the term too… you catch my drift, right?

The true subject of ridicule here is the player and their awkward attempts to manage a spoiled character. It feels like a twisted blend of QWOP and Octodad, where instead of an Ordinary Person, we’re handed a barely controllable mass of limbs and organs, clumsily mapped to a gamepad (keyboard use is strictly off-limits) in a deliberately mocking manner.

When the comedy is deeply rooted in gameplay rather than simply relying on a script, it becomes genuinely entertaining. Sam struggles just to stay upright, transforming even a mundane morning into a series of challenging quick-time events. As he prepares for work, he might faint while brushing his teeth, blind himself by splashing hot coffee into his eyes, or, in a particularly embarrassing moment, have an accident in the closet. How many of you can honestly say you’ve faced such chaotic mornings? Honestly, I’d rather not know. It’s these moments that blend frustration with humor, making the experience all the more relatable.

Naturally, challenges layer on top of one another with each new level, creating a more intricate experience. Before long, you find yourself maneuvering a car through a maze of ever-present elderly ladies while piecing together robots from hazardous radioactive materials. Given that perfecting basic skills like walking and eye-wetting is nearly impossible, the introduction of complex challenges transforms the game into a delightfully absurd adventure and, more importantly, a source of immense fun. Roughly two-thirds of the gameplay is experienced with genuine enjoyment.

Yet, unfortunately, Manual Samuel – Anniversary Edition eventually sheds its facade of a goofy but endearing guest, morphing into that annoying visitor who overstays their welcome and digs into the sugar bowl with a wet spoon. The humor, which initially feels fresh, becomes repetitive and tiresome. Not to mention the gags that inflate into a lackluster imitation of “South Park,” losing their original charm. In the later chapters, the gameplay mechanics lose their luster and excitement. Instead of engaging, quick mini-games, you suddenly face a mediocre browser arcade filled with waves of enemies, and, as it turns out, the controls are horrendously unresponsive. This tedious and monotonous showdown with the final boss does little to enhance the overall experience and leaves players feeling frustrated rather than satisfied.

The ending is frustrating and significantly detracts from the overall experience. It feels as though the gameplay was intentionally stretched by an additional 30-40 minutes solely to surpass the threshold where Steam stops offering refunds. The punchline of the final achievement (“No Refunds!”) takes on a rather grim tone when viewed in this context.

If it weren’t for that jarring moment at the end, Manual Samuel might have just managed to retain its status as a decent one-idea game. Despite its awkwardness, it is both original and entertaining in its own quirky way—yet not quite enough to compel players to endure it all the way to the end. The charm and humor can only carry it so far, leaving some players feeling disillusioned by the experience.
