Hot sun, streets filled with fear and an atmosphere where danger lurks around every corner – this is what the homeland of the mafia looks like. In this dangerous world, young Enzo Favara grows up. He is on the threshold of a fateful choice: to become part of a ruthless clan, he must forget about fear, morality and, perhaps, himself. But how far is he willing to go for this?

The quiet, seemingly idyllic Sicily with its endless vineyards and sun-drenched villages only covers up its true face – cruel, covered in bloody bonds of betrayal and silent agreements. Here, far from the smog and bustle of the city, life is also in full swing – but under the surface, in the shadows, where mafia clans play their eternal game of survival. Here loyalty is measured in blood, and the word “trust” disappears as quickly as a shot rings out.
You are at the center of this story. Not a hero, but not a monster either. Enzo, a man who is forced to make a choice: to survive or die, to obey or to become one of those who dictate the rules. This is a story of the early 20th century, where every decision you make echoes in the corridors of power of the underworld. Here, every ally can have a knife behind his back, and every enemy is too tenacious.

The skirmishes here are not for the faint of heart. Your fight is not just fire and lead. It is close combat, when more than life is at stake. Want to remain unnoticed? Act quickly and silently. Ready to meet the enemy face to face? Then prepare for a bloody duel. And if you prefer weapons, you have at your disposal authentic pistols, rifles and shotguns of that era. Everything to deal with the enemies of the Don – quickly, brutally and decisively.
Sicily will open up before you in all its contrasting beauty: damp, death-smelling catacombs, ancient dilapidated buildings, lush theaters with gilded interiors and sun-drenched vineyards. A world where the line between art and violence is erased. And if necessary, you will gallop along the cobblestone streets on a horse or break into pursuit in a rumbling car from the turn of the century, leaving dust and chaos behind.

Plot of Mafia: The Old Country
Mafia: The Old Country takes us to the very beginning of the 20th century, to the hot lands of Sicily – where the very concept of “mafia” first acquired its terrifying power. The main character will be young Enzo Favara – still green, but already ambitious member of the clan subordinate to Don Torrisi. He will have to go through a difficult path: from a small pawn to an influential figure in the criminal hierarchy.
The project was conceived as a prequel to the entire trilogy, and this sounds logical – after all, it was on Sicilian soil that the very shadow was born, under which the events of the previous parts unfolded.

The Mafia franchise itself has always told different, sometimes completely unrelated stories. But between the lines, recognizable references slipped, surprises for fans: from the appearance of Vito in the third part to the legendary phrase about “greetings from Mr. Salieri.” These elements created a subtle but strong connection between the games.
Personally, I hope that the fourth part will finally become a real prequel, and not just a new story in the same setting. I would like to see, even if only for a short moment, the young Salieri and Morello – maybe in episodic roles or plot twists. And the ideal ending would be if one of them betrayed Enzo – left him in the dust, at the turning point of his own life. So that the finale would not just be a point, but a strong chord, echoing the tragic fates of the heroes of the previous parts.
Mafia: The Old Country – will it be a linear game?
New details have emerged — the game will be completely linear and focused on completing the story. The open world we are so accustomed to will simply not be here. And if we put aside all the talk about marketing, prices and other conspiracy theories, it becomes clear why the project was priced at $50 — because it offers exactly what you pay for, without any frills. Honestly, we are happy about this ourselves, aren’t we?
It’s just a shame that not all developers are ready to follow this example. Sometimes it feels like games are deliberately inflated, filled with something unnecessary, in order to justify the budget increase later. And the result is a bunch of emptiness and monotony. We don’t need this. At all. But on the other hand — is it good that the world will be closed? It seems that most gamers have already had their fill of open worlds: wherever you spit, there’s some kind of sandbox. Of course, I’m exaggerating a little now, but I think the point is clear. Although, to be honest, the open world concept itself is not to blame. The problem is how it is implemented.

Remember the first parts of “Mafia”. There was an open world there too – and it worked. Not as entertainment, but as a tool. Empty, tasteless at first glance, but it perfectly coped with the task: it conveyed the atmosphere, created a sense of time and place. Driving from point A to point B, listening to the music of those years, observing the city in which history seemed to be frozen – that was the point. It did not entertain, it immersed. I’d better keep quiet about the third part – you know how it was received. But in the first two games, even despite the lack of activity on every corner, the world breathed. It lived its own life, and it was in it that the characters were revealed. After all, “Mafia” was never a game about fun. It is not about storming forts, not about clearing enemy camps. It is not just about shooting. It is about time, era, about elections and consequences.
You drive an old rattling car from the 30s or 40s, just to complete a quest. You follow the traffic rules – because that’s the point. That’s the life of the heroes of those years. Through everyday life, through routine, through the silence of the streets and cigarette smoke, you feel the weight of the entire era. And suddenly the ending – becomes not just a finale, but an emotional point that stays with you. That’s why Daniel Vavra – the same one who created the first “Mafia” – loved to include things like carrying boxes or banal work in his games. It wasn’t boring – it was part of a big world. Alas, in the new game called The Old Country, they abandoned this.
I understand that for some this may seem like a plus. Perhaps, you, reading this, think: “Well, great, finally without this dull open world!” And you know what? It’s normal. Everyone has their own taste. It just seems to me that, for all the value of focusing on the plot, complete linearity can deprive the game of some depth – the very one that the atmosphere of the streets, the smell of asphalt and the squeak of tires once gave.

However, maybe I’m wrong. Who knows, maybe the developers will be able to recreate magic without an open world. If so, I’ll only be happy.
As for the gameplay, it promises to be quite familiar. Here’s what, according to the authors, awaits us:
-
Third-person shootouts with cover
-
Close combat and knife fights
-
Stealth (not much, but it will be)
-
Horse and vintage car chases
By the way, they also promise an “immersive approach”. Whatever that means in the context of the game, I hope it’s not just a trendy word.
We’ll see. The main thing is that the story turns out strong. Here, to be honest, I’m almost sure that everything will be fine. But as for the balance with the action, I have doubts. I don’t want the game to be turned into another action movie. Because “Mafia” is, first of all, about people. About life. About the atmosphere. About the choice that, once made, changes everything.
