Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 looks like a continuation of an already familiar adventure, but with a slight “add-on” in the form of new parts and a couple of pleasant surprises. There’s an improved pitch, additional levels, and an expanded plot spanning the latest Harry Potter books. However, behind the bright wrapper lies the same familiar gameplay: repetitive tasks, simple puzzles and cycling, which can quickly get boring.
Therefore, the game is likely to appeal only to the most devoted fans of J. K. Rowling’s universe and those who sincerely adore LEGO building blocks. If you belong to this particular audience, you will find a portion of magic in cubic form. But for those who were waiting for something really new and fresh, the previous part of Lego Harry Potter would have been quite enough.

As before, the game’s storyline follows the pages of a familiar book: you have to destroy everything around you with the Expelliarmus spell, fight enemies and collect parts from cubes to unlock new levels. But now the developers have added some interesting details. For example, the Weasley twins have prepared surprises, and a water spray spell has appeared in the arsenal — it helps not only to water flowers, but also to extinguish small fires in locations. At the same time, the characters return to the same places over and over again, running kilometers around Hogwarts for different characters and completing fairly similar missions.
Boss battles like Bellatrix Lestrange could be much more spectacular if it weren’t for the mechanics of endless button pressing. In any duel, the essence boils down to four counterspell hits into the enemy’s spell, and all this is often stretched due to the inconvenient interface. The constant stick battles quickly tire you out and start to annoy you by the middle of the game. Of course, dragon rides or rides on magical roller coasters add variety, but they are too few to compensate for about 15 hours of monotonous gameplay.

Fans of the grind can spend dozens of hours collecting 200 gold bars and 24 school emblems. However, for most, this is more of a test of patience. The only fresh solution is Luna Lovegood’s Spectre Specs glasses, which allow you to find and build structures from invisible cubes. This element enlivens the gameplay a bit.
Diagon Alley still acts as the central hub: new characters are opened here, cheats are activated and tasks are selected. But globally, this doesn’t change much. Co-op on one screen remains the main way to play together, and although it works stably, there are fewer impressions. The humor that was once the hallmark of the series has noticeably subsided — now it is limited to awkward skits (the same tent with Harry and Hermione) and a couple of jokes with spells. Of course, it’s fun to pour water on each other, but this is too little to call the project truly exciting.

Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 Gameplay
From a technological point of view, Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 is almost the same as the previous installments: the graphics still look a little outdated, the animations often make you smile with their deliberate absurdity, the camera is sometimes stubborn, and the controls are not always perfectly responsive. At first glance, you can blame Traveller’s Tales studio for not getting rid of old problems, but this game does not seek to compete with giants like Skyrim or Batman: Arkham City. It honestly remains in the genre of a parody arcade game, where the main thing is not technical perfection, but light humor, nostalgia and fan service.
Unlike Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4, the sequel looks darker and more serious — as much as possible in the “brick” LEGO format. The story of growing up, taken from the Harry Potter movie epic, turns into a satirical production here. Even the most tragic events are presented with humor: the characters make grimaces, fall, get confused in spells, and each cut scene turns into a little comedy. This is Traveller’s Tales’ signature style, which makes the game equally appealing to both children and adult fans of the universe.
It’s a bit disappointing that players have to learn familiar spells again and visit locations from previous installments. It seems like hours were wasted completing Years 1-4 in vain? But this is exactly what preserves the integrity of the series: without such elements, the parody would risk slipping into a chaotic spin-off.

Fortunately, Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 adds a lot of fresh ideas. There are new spells with multiple use cases — for example, Aqualay now helps not only to extinguish fire, but also to fill garden sprinklers with water. The characters have gained unique abilities:
-
Professor Lupin can transform into a werewolf,
-
members of the Weasley family open boxes of branded “wreckers”,
-
Spectroculars help to see hidden LEGO blocks,
-
New locations include a gloomy Dark Forest and bustling London.
All these elements enliven a familiar plot and give the player a sense of novelty.
Yes, the puzzles in Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 are not difficult: most of them are solved by themselves, and the mechanics of “press X to win” have not disappeared anywhere. But it’s this lightness that makes the game fun and unpredictable. One wrong move and a carrot in the garden turns into an improvised paraglider, and in the cemetery Hermione turns on a giant gramophone, to the music of which ghosts begin to dance. Each spell triggers a chain of comical and magical events, and that’s what holds the players’ attention.
Magical duels deserve special attention. Unlike the monotonous shootouts in LEGO Star Wars or Indiana Jones, everything here is built on dynamics. The player must dodge, place shields, quickly pick up spells depending on the situation and be constantly on the move. This makes the battles feel lively and intense, but they don’t lose their signature LEGO charm.
In fact, Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 repeats the formula of previous LEGO Traveller’s Tales games, but it is the magical world of J. K. Rowling that best fits into the concept of “brick” arcades. Magical artifacts, sweets, collectible cards, secret rooms and dozens of secrets turn the passage into a celebration of exploration and collecting. This is not a game for those who are looking for a serious challenge or a dark plot. This is an easy and fun adventure that brings the joy of discovery. Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 is perfect for a family evening, for playing together with friends, or as a quick way to distract yourself and immerse yourself in the world of magic and humor.
