My first encounter with Killing Floor was quite accidental — it just so happened that the game literally ended up at my fingertips. If it weren’t for this coincidence, I might have passed it by without realizing how captivating it could be.
Now a sequel is coming out — and it’s coming out, to put it mildly, with an unexpected approach. The developers decided to launch the game on Steam via Early Access, which personally evokes mixed feelings in me. Now, for many gamers, this label is associated not with a chance to play earlier, but rather with unfinished, hastily assembled projects. As if they are in a hurry to put out at least something, just to quickly take up space on the showcase.

What is Killing Floor 2? In essence, it’s the same lively zombie-battle as in the first part – only now there is more of everything, tougher and more spectacular. The same crazy waves of monsters, the same six desperate fighters in a team (and sometimes less), the same drive from destroying the undead. But now – without the old flaws and with a bunch of fresh features. And, frankly, it’s incredibly pleasing.
The concept has hardly changed – and thank God. The developers did not break what was already working, but they knew exactly where and what needed to be tweaked. And in some places, they even added. For example, dismemberment has now reached a new level. In general, you can say that the whole of Killing Floor 2 is about a meat grinder, shotguns and pure adrenaline, as if you were in Doom II again, only with modern graphics and the juiciest blood.

Now you can hack zombies any way you like: saw them lengthwise, smash them to pieces with a double-barreled shotgun, pierce their skulls with shovels and bayonet knives, leave fist-sized holes – and all this remains on the map until the end of the match. The blood does not disappear, it is literally absorbed into the scenery, and thanks to shaders and the Unreal Engine 3, it all looks like art in the “meat in 4K” genre.

Best Guns and Perks in Killing Floor 2
Now that we’ve sorted out the meat grinder, it’s time to move on to the equally important stuff: the arsenal and perk system. The weapon set in Killing Floor 2 is a real joy for gun lovers. Forget about the hellish recoil that was in the first part, now shooting is not only convenient, but also damn enjoyable. All guns feel powerful and juicy: from the classic AK-12 to the legendary “boomstick” in the spirit of Ash from “Evil Dead”. Here you have the FN SCAR-H, and the medic’s cyberpunk guns, and even… a hammer-shotgun. Yes, you heard right – a hammer-shotgun! Just try to smear a Zed with it – and you’ll understand what I mean.
And what about perks? The developers have tried hard here too. Don’t think that you’ll have geeky skills a la Call of Duty – the system is more like full-fledged game classes. And this time, the start for each class feels different: each fighter now has a unique starting weapon, which makes the beginning of the game not only interesting, but also useful for leveling up.

Remember how you used to suffer playing as a pyromaniac until you knocked out the coveted flamethrower? All in the past! Now the commando starts with an AR15 SMG, the support – with a shotgun, the medic – with a healing pistol, and the berserker gets a real brutal sapper shovel, which can not only dig, but also chicly chop up enemies.
Leveling up has become easier and more logical – experience points now go specifically for actions corresponding to the class. No need to reinvent the wheel anymore: everyone levels up what they like. And when leveling up, you can choose a bonus to the characteristics – adjust the class to yourself, to your style. A real upgrade on all fronts!
Should You Buy Killing Floor 2 in Early Access? Pros and Cons
What’s next? Everything seems to be in the classic genre: updated monster models, improved graphics, new bosses, classes… although wait, not everything is smooth with the classes. The game is still in beta. There is only one new boss so far – a crazy German cyborg scientist armed with an MP43, with grenades based on the Nova 6 and a very… peculiar approach to those who get in the way. (Yes, he can really grab the player by the nipples. Don’t ask.)
The situation with classes is modest so far: there are only four of them. Fans of sniper rifles, flamethrowers and demolition work can only wait for now. And you can’t shoot from pistols, like in the good old Macedonian days. Tripwire warned from the very beginning: this is early access, the full filling will appear closer to the final release.

At the moment, Killing Floor 2 suffers from a lack of content:
-
Only a few maps
-
Only four available classes
-
A modest selection of skins
-
No new types of monsters
-
Limited customization options
But all this is temporary. Updates are already underway, and by the final release the list of features will definitely become much more impressive.
From the very start, the developers released two video diaries – “Blood” and “Guns and Classes”. And with this, it seems, they said everything about themselves. The essence of Killing Floor 2 is not in the numbers or the number of modes – its essence is in pure, unbridled pleasure. Pleasure from a shotgun mowing down zombies in bursts. Pleasure from fountains of blood and darkness. Pleasure from how you burst into a crowd with a katana. From intense hardcore and a well-deserved victory. Isn’t this why we turn on such games?
Should I buy the game? Absolutely yes. But is it worth doing it right now? It all depends on you. If you can easily survive a couple of maps and a limited set of classes, then you will already have a lot of fun. But if you want the most, it might be wiser to wait for the release. Especially since content is being added little by little already.
