If as a child you made space rockets from a construction set or spent hours drawing out bizarre starships on paper, then Kerbal Space Program will definitely hit your heart. This is not just a game, but a real adventure for those who have always dreamed of the stars. Initially, it was released on PC, and recently moved to modern consoles, opening the way for new players. Kerbal Space Program is a mix of arcade and simulator, where the main emphasis is still on realism. Here you will have to take control of a full-fledged space program, develop it step by step and lead it to success. All this happens on the fictional planet Kerbin, which, together with its system, has become home to curious and fearless Kerbals.

About three years ago, a seemingly simple game appeared on the Internet. The player was offered a small assembly shop on the distant planet Kerbin, where he could build his own rocket from available parts. Three green astronauts, whom fans immediately nicknamed “cucumbers” for their funny resemblance to vegetables, sat at the helm. The task was simple: press “Start” and try to launch a homemade spaceship into orbit.
It took literally a couple of minutes to assemble the rocket – and now the structure, more like a toy set from childhood, was standing on the launch pad. “Key to launch!” – and the fun began. Rockets collapsed right before our eyes, exploded at the launch site, dove into the ocean or simply refused to take off. But it was precisely this chaos that was the magic. Only a few managed to launch a satellite, and each successful launch was perceived as a small personal victory. The simple shell hid much more – the basics of aerodynamics, physics, laws of balance and persistence that was required from the player.

If the creators had taken the easy way out and left the project at the level of a fun toy for the evening, Kerbal Space Program would have disappeared among hundreds of other indie projects. But the developers from the Squad studio turned out to be persistent and passionate people. Thanks to their work, the game turned into a full-fledged space simulator that won the hearts of thousands of players and proved that even “cucumbers” are capable of opening the way to the stars.

How to build a rocket in KSP
It is important to understand right away: Kerbal Space Program is not just a simulator of an astronaut or a designer, although such roles are present here. In fact, the game covers much more – it is a full-fledged model of a space program, where you will build rockets, plan missions, and control each system of the ship in flight, making your way beyond the atmosphere of the planet Kerbin.
It all starts quite simply. The first task is to launch a small satellite into orbit. Anyone can build a primitive rocket: no engineering diplomas are required. We take the command module, screw fuel tanks and engines to it, try not to mix up the order of the stages – otherwise, at launch, you can accidentally turn on the “third floor” when the first ones have not yet worked. We launch, watch how the structure collapses into the ocean or falls apart in the air, analyze the reasons and go back to the assembly shop. This is how learning happens – through trial, error and a new launch, until, finally, the first artificial satellite of Kerbin enters a stable orbit.

The flight control system is extremely simple – a few keys for maneuvers, stabilization, thrust adjustment and activation of the necessary modules. But the point is not in the buttons, but in understanding the physics of movement. One wrong move or an extra jerk of the engine at the wrong moment can bury the entire mission. Only experience saves here: the more launches, the better you begin to feel the mechanics of flight. And while there is no economy in the game (and the developers promised to add it later), the price of a mistake is only your time.
Beginners are especially recommended to start in career mode. Here, parts and modules are opened gradually, step by step. This approach allows you to organically master all the possibilities of the game. In the sandbox, where everything is available at once, it is easy to get lost in the huge choice and assemble a rocket that is more likely to explode than fly.
Physics and Flight Control in Kerbal Space Program
Surprisingly, quite soon after the first failed launches, you realize that your ships are no longer just falling on Kerbin, but confidently spinning in orbit. Even if they are chaotic, even if there is no clear plan – but this is no longer just a pile of iron, but real equipment that works. Sometimes, the Kerbonauts even manage to save some fuel to return home and take with them a handful of valuable data for new research. And here the main question opens up for the player: what next?
And then the most interesting part begins, because there are almost no restrictions. An entire star system is at your disposal – planets, the moon Mun, frozen Minmus, asteroid belts … all this is enough for hundreds of hours of play. After the first steps around Kerbin, the thought comes: “Why not try my own version of the Apollo mission?” And here KSP reveals itself in all its glory. Despite the cartoonish appearance, the game is based on the laws of physics and requires an understanding of at least basic space navigation. Periapse, apoapse, delta-V — these words become your new friends.
Of course, you don’t need to study textbooks on astronavigation, but without minimal knowledge, an attempt to land on Mun will quickly turn into a series of epic disasters. Moreover, not everything in the game is ideal from the point of view of real science: multibody gravity is not calculated here, and aerodynamics lives by its own, slightly strange rules. Nevertheless, even with the orbit planner, preparing for long-distance flights turns into a real test. Either the fuel runs out at the most inopportune moment, or the landing turns into an explosion right at the surface. And if you forget to install the landing legs… well, it’s better not to think about this a second before touchdown. But a dozen or two attempts — and here it is, that very first step on the gray surface of Mun, the moment for which this entire space odyssey was started.

At the same time, the game does not force you to immediately rush to other worlds. Sometimes it is enough to simply assemble your orbital station. True, even this is not an easy task: to dock two modules, each flying along its own trajectory, is a test of patience. But it is precisely these steps that teach you to think like a real engineer. With experience comes the ability to design devices that not only land on planets, but also return back. And this is important not only for show: a living Kerbal returning home will bring much more scientific points than reports transmitted by radio.
KSP is a fantasy game. Here you can come up with tasks for yourself: organize an expedition to all the planets with a mandatory return, collect the garbage left after the first unsuccessful launches, hunt for Easter eggs or even drag asteroids. Each new “what if?” gives birth to a whole story.
And then there are mods. Since the first days of release, the community has filled the game with hundreds of modifications – from simple new parts to complex planet scanning systems or interface redesign. They are what make the game almost endless.
And, perhaps, the most unexpected thing is the beauty of Kerbal Space Program. Not in terms of textures or special effects – they are simple here. But in the sense of scale. You sit in front of the screen and understand: here is a small green astronaut, left alone in the abyss of stars. And this infinity, this silence of space sometimes gets to you more than in much more realistic simulators like Space Engine.
The Future of Kerbal Space Program
It is worth remembering: this is not the final version of the game yet. The developers, who, by the way, are actively cooperating with NASA, are preparing a number of innovations. The next updates will feature a full-fledged economy, which will force players to plan each step in the development of their space program more carefully, as well as a multiplayer mode. The moment is not far off when ships of different players will intersect in orbit, and the first joint colonies will grow on alien planets. Perhaps something like the “Inter-Dukerbinsky space station” will appear. The only thing that the creators promise not to add is “star wars”. The project is conceived as a peaceful simulator, but if you connect your imagination or modifications, you can turn a rocket into a weapon even now.

What is already known about future updates:
-
the appearance of an economic system that makes the game more strategic;
-
multiplayer, where players’ ships will be able to meet in orbit;
-
creation of stations and colonies on other planets.
KSP remains a unique popular science simulator that unobtrusively but excitingly awakens interest in space and its exploration. This is why NASA is paying attention to the developers. At the same time, the game does not slide into a dry interactive textbook – it is still, first and foremost, an exciting entertainment that is still in the stage of active development and promises a lot of interesting opportunities in the future. But it all began with a tiny homemade product, where clumsily assembled rockets cheerfully flew into pieces after launch…
