The rest are either for an amateur or don’t live up to expectations. That’s why Jotun: Valhalla Edition was of great interest from the very beginning: such projects don’t come out often, and even more so – they don’t often please with something truly worthwhile.

The story centers on Thora, the chieftain’s daughter, born on the day when thunder roared across the sky. It was believed that Thor himself blessed the newborn, and so she was named in his honor. From an early age, Thora showed remarkable strength and warrior spirit. The blood of a true fighter boiled in her veins, and soon she became known among the Vikings as one of the bravest warriors.

But fate treated her cruelly. On the way to the battle where she could have become famous, Thora dies, drowning by the will of the goddess of water. Not in battle, not from the sword of an enemy – but in an icy abyss. For a Viking, this is a shameful death. But Thora’s soul is not ready to accept it. Her thirst for glory and her desire to prove her valor are so great that the gods themselves grant her a second chance.

Now she must pass through Ginnungagap – a primordial void where reality and myth intertwine – and fight the Jotuns, ancient giants who embody the elements of nature. Victory over them will open the way for Thor to Valhalla, where an eternal feast awaits only those who fell in battle with honor. But this path is not easy – to get to each of the giants, you must first find two runes that seal the path. There are ten such runes in total, and each is hidden in a special corner of the Scandinavian mythological world.

The player will have to lead Thor through icy wastelands, lava caves, sunken temples and even along the branches of Yggdrasil itself – the world tree that connects all the worlds. There is almost no life in these places. You won’t find hordes of enemies like in other action games. In Jotun, you’re more of a wanderer than a warrior: exploring, thinking, listening to the world around you. Only occasionally will small enemies block your path, but the main challenges are nature itself, riddles, and large-scale battles with powerful Jotuns.

Puzzles and navigation elements play a key role here. Sometimes you’ll have to think hard to get to the right rune. The task is simplified by the map displayed on the Wii U Gamepad screen – with it, navigating this strange, majestic world becomes a little easier. But the path still remains a challenge – not only for Thor, but also for the player himself.

There aren’t many games in the world of video games that take Scandinavian mythology seriously. But Jotun: Valhalla Edition is one of those rare cases where the developers weren’t just inspired by the myths, but created something visually powerful and emotionally captivating from them.

Let’s just say there aren’t many enemies here. There are only five real bosses, the very same Jotuns, giants of the ancient world, capable of wiping Thor off the face of the earth in a couple of precise blows. All other opponents, like the dwarves, are more like extras against the backdrop of this epic scene. They don’t pose a serious threat, and they shouldn’t: the entire emphasis is on duels with divine giants. The concept is reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus, where every fight is an event. But unlike the masterpiece from Sony, there’s no need to guess for a long time how to win: no tricky riddles, weak points or platform puzzles. Just grab an axe and go ahead, chop!

However, don’t think that everything is easy. The Jotuns are huge, strong and unforgiving. Their attacks are slow but devastating. And if Thora misses just two or three blows, she will find herself not in Valhalla, but in the arms of Hel, the goddess of death. That is why the player will have to constantly be on guard and look for ways to strengthen the heroine. Fortunately, the developers took care of the balance. In the world of Jotun, you can find altars that grant divine powers. This includes a blow from Thor’s hammer, and acceleration from Freya, and healing from Frigga. And also – unusual golden apples hidden in sacred groves: they increase Thora’s health bar, giving a little more chance of survival in fights with giants. Without these abilities, the game would feel much tougher: the heroine’s combat arsenal is rather modest – only two types of strikes and a roll. Seriously, against such monsters this is clearly not enough.

And now the important part: what else is there in the game, besides battles with the Jotuns? And here most players are divided into two camps. Some complain about the “scarcity of content”, because besides these battles and a dozen locations to explore, there is nothing else in Jotun. No leveling up, no quests, no dialogues. And others are absolutely delighted. Because everything else here is replaced by the atmosphere. The graphics in Jotun are not just beautiful, they are hand-drawn. Each location looks like a frame from a mythological cartoon. The nature is harsh and mesmerizing: snowy plains, volcanic wastelands, sunken ruins – everything looks like a living illustration from an ancient saga. Inspiration is felt immediately – this is both Dragon’s Lair and The Banner Saga, but with the author’s unique style.

The music and sound design only enhance the immersion. Every fight, every step of Thor feels important. It’s as if you yourself become a participant in an ancient myth, fighting not just for victory, but for honor, for a place in Valhalla. So if you are looking for a game with dozens of hours of gameplay, character leveling and endless quests – Jotun is not for you. But if you want to feel a real epic, to plunge into a legend, where every moment is imbued with the spirit of Scandinavian legend – give the game a chance. Perhaps it will touch you more than you expected.

However, the visual component is just the tip of the iceberg. The main magic lies in the battles. Each fight with Jotun is not just an action episode, but a real test, during which you feel fear, excitement, and immense pride after victory. Jotuns are giants, formidable guardians who embody primordial strength. It is impossible to fight them on equal terms – you have to look for weaknesses, adapt, wait. Victory does not come for free, and that is why it is especially valuable. Sometimes, looking at the screen, it is difficult to even notice the fragile figure of the main character – these battles are so large-scale and spectacular. The camera moves away, revealing majestic battlefields, where you, tiny, encounter a creature the size of a mountain. It makes you feel like you’re part of something truly epic.

The sound and voice acting create a special atmosphere. The narrator’s voice, filled with wisdom and calm, skillfully conveys fragments of the story, and the sound effects during battles simply give you goosebumps. In every attack, every thunderclap, in the roar of Jotun – you can feel the weight and power. The sound director’s work is done at a high level, and the artists clearly put their soul into the visual style of the game: landscapes, bosses, effects – everything seems to have come from mythological engravings.

However, between these grand battles, the player has to explore the world and collect runes – and here the game stalls a little. Although Thunder Lotus Games tried not to drag out the levels and made the journeys compact, the exploration becomes monotonous over time. Only truly beautiful locations inspired by northern nature and myths save the day.

The plot is also presented in an interesting way. It unfolds gradually – only after defeating each Jotun does the player receive another fragment of the story. This dosing gives the narrative rhythm and even an element of mystery. The game unobtrusively introduces us to the heroes and gods of Scandinavian legends, doing it respectfully, beautifully, and in moderation. It’s just a pity that everything ends too quickly – on average, it will take from 5 to 10 hours to complete, depending on your skill.

Valhalla Edition deserves special attention – an updated version that has reached consoles. The main innovation is the Valhalla mode. This is a kind of test for veterans, where you will have to meet all the Jotuns again, one after another, but in a more difficult version: they have become stronger, more resilient, and more deadly. At the same time, you retain all the skills and maximum health, so the equation is quite fair – who will win. The results after each battle are recorded, so there is a reason to try again and again, improving your style.

Let’s not forget about the support of the Russian language – although there is little text in the game, the presence of subtitles creates additional comfort for players who do not speak English. This is a small but very nice gesture from the developers.

In the end, Jotun: Valhalla Edition is not just an action adventure. This is an epic story about struggle, courage and the path to Valhalla. It does not strive to be long, does not attract with hundreds of mechanics, but sincerely pleases with what it does: spectacular battles, the beauty of the world and respect for myths. This is a game you drop in for an evening and leave feeling like you’ve become part of an ancient saga. And even if some elements may seem simple, the overall experience is vivid and memorable.
