The system is simple, but cruel – to summon a stronger animal, you have to sacrifice weaker ones. Over time, this ceases to seem scary, because each winning game makes you more experienced and brings you closer to the solution. Even the cards themselves seem to suggest how to find the weak spot of your strange opponent.
But the game is not everything. When you are not fighting, you can get up from the table and explore the hut. The world map here is not just a background, but a separate game: you wander along branching paths, choosing where to turn – to the merchant, to a new battle, to a mysterious bonfire or to a test where you can get a new relic or potion. Sometimes you will come across a chance to pump up your favorite creature or try to combine two identical cards into something more powerful. Just don’t expect cute animations: when local survivors offer to leave the card by the bonfire, they constantly look at it with too hungry eyes. One mistake – and the card disappears forever. And when you need to cross two animals, you are honestly advised to turn away, because the spectacle promises to be not for the faint of heart – and really, you can only guess what is happening there.
The controls here are in the first person, as if you are sitting at the table opposite Leshy. Everything looks so natural and tough that in particularly tense moments you really get the shivers. The game has its own rules: victories are counted not by points, but by teeth on the scale – and if you don’t have enough, you can always pull out your own tooth with pliers. There are other radical things in stock: scissors to deal with a particularly annoying enemy card, or a hook that will allow you to lure your opponent’s creature. The most shocking item is a knife, with which you can poke out your own eye for an instant victory. You won’t find such hardcore in any other card game.

Sometimes it seems that he is watching your every move, adjusting the rules for himself and coming up with a new trick every time. There is an old clock on the wall, the hands of which need to be set in a certain order to find out the next clue. You can also find unusual figures in the room – you will also have to interact with them, because they can become the key to the solution. Sometimes it seems that all this is a continuous series of strange tasks, but it is through them that you gradually move towards the exit.

The most interesting thing is that the role of jumpers here is played by … cards. Some of them suddenly begin to literally talk to you. At the very beginning, an ermine appears – sarcastic, a little nervous, as if he was also not here of his own free will. Later, a cockroach joins him, who is clearly unhappy with something and constantly encourages you or, on the contrary, jokes. This couple not only comments on everything around, but also often hints where to look or what objects to try to use (“You noticed that wolf in the cage, right? This is important!”). They push you to action: sometimes they advise you to make an escape plan, sometimes they even hint that Leshy is not who he seems, and there is something more hidden behind this nightmare.
All this causes mixed feelings: every now and then you catch yourself thinking that what is happening is both frightening and amusing. But against the background of how the game shuffles genres, styles and even meanings, this is a minor nitpick. Personally, after the final credits, I felt a strange paranoia: I wanted to erase Incryption from the disk and forget it like a bad dream. Or, on the contrary, send the disk to Mullins himself, with a note: “Take this damn game back!” On the other hand, you never know what will happen next… Especially when someone is already knocking on the door (and you are not sure who it is).
