And yet, there is still hope: despite the widespread cult of hype and disappointment, sometimes the sequels that were expected from the very announcement come out – or even better.
The latest parts of HITMAN are just from this rare category. Without unnecessary noise, without flashy trailers and empty promises – only a time-tested stealth action with puzzle elements and recognizable “masquerade” gameplay. For two decades now, IO Interactive has been leading its series along a familiar trajectory, where each new part feels like a logical continuation of the previous one. You dive into the game and already know what to expect, albeit with a couple of surprises along the way. This predictability is also stability, and it is, no matter how you look at it, a sign of quality.

But there is a downside. When everything is too familiar, excitement gives way to fatigue. And here HITMAN 3 found itself in a difficult position: long before the release, almost everything became clear – from the level design to possible plot twists. Even the scene in the Berlin forest from the first trailer gave away almost the entire message of the game. And here’s the question: is it bad that the “three” is more of a large-scale DLC with several fresh ideas than an independent revolution? Everything depends on the implementation – and IO Interactive has been doing well with this in recent years.

What’s Different About Hitman 3: Plot, Mechanics, and Levels
The third season of the spy saga starts without delay – the action unfolds immediately after the events of the DLC from the previous part. Agent 47 and his team have finally collected all the evidence on Providence – a mysterious and influential organization that invisibly pulls the strings of world politics. The plan is simple: blow off all the heads of this criminal hydra with one blow. But, as often happens in the world of conspiracies and shadow empires, everything does not go according to plan. Influential businessmen and politicians always have hidden trump cards, and the situation quickly turns into chaos. Even the cold-blooded 47 finds himself on the verge of a breakdown.
Despite the powerful introduction, the structure of the game has remained true to itself. From the very beginning, six large missions are available to you – each in its own unique location, with its own goals and atmosphere. Do you want to go through everything quietly and carefully? Please. Do you prefer to act like a destructive storm, leaving only silence and fear in your wake? No one will forbid you either. The levels are surprisingly diverse: an elite skyscraper in sunny Dubai, a gothic mansion with secrets in England, a winery among the Argentine hills, and even a rave club on the outskirts of Berlin, where it’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

Each location is not just a background, but almost a living organism. The worlds are worked out to the smallest detail, with love and attention that border on obsession. Everything here — from the arrangement of furniture to the behavior of NPCs — is subject to internal logic. Even if what’s happening on the screen sometimes resembles scenes from “Final Destination,” the game somehow remains believable. This is facilitated by both well-written dialogues and brilliant, subtle design details. Where else can you encounter the fact that at the most crucial moment your passage is blocked not by guards, but by a couple flirting in a secluded corner?
But the main advantage of HITMAN 3 is not the scenery at all, although they are impressive. The real heart of the game is the gameplay. As before, it is built on an elegant balance between planning and improvisation. Your task is to infiltrate a secure area, study the surroundings, pick up a suit, equipment and… figure out how to eliminate the target. And there are tons of ways to do this. Whether it will be an “accident”, poison, a bullet from afar or something much more unconventional – it’s up to you. Want to play a real spy? Change clothes, hide in closets, use the environment. Prefer to work in the style of a “sledgehammer”? Go ahead – no one is stopping you.
However, the most striking moments are born when the player decides to bother and come up with something elegant. There are plenty of options: you can, for example, pretend to be a private detective investigating a mysterious death, and in the process not only expose the victim, but also frame someone else. Or organize a wine tour – with an unexpected ending at the production equipment. In HITMAN 3, each level is not just a task, but a whole toolbox of creativity. The game encourages you to experiment, find new paths, cheat, outplay – and at the same time does not lose face. It is still the same Hitman, but mature, confident and incredibly exciting.

At its best, HITMAN 3 awakens that childish curiosity when you want to try everything at once: “What will happen if I do this? Is it possible to take out two targets with one shot and remain unnoticed?” These questions sound familiar, not least because the previous parts have already accustomed us to this style of play. But despite this, the third one does not feel like a repeat. On the contrary, the developers cleverly play with expectations, turn familiar situations upside down and constantly provoke improvisation. In places, the game even deliberately refuses to use the interface and markers, as if pushing you to think with your head, and not follow the instructions. Some levels completely knock the ground out from under your feet. The German mission is a great example: instead of the usual predator in the crowd, you yourself become the hunted prey, and this role reversal works brilliantly. Everything is done so unconventionally and inventively that the first run through the level can be called one of the best scenes in the entire history of the series.
There is another subtle, not immediately noticeable feature in the game – IO Interactive’s desire to pay tribute to all the previous parts. Here is Chongqing, evoking memories of the gloomy alleys of Contracts, here is the finale, clearly winking at Blood Money with its sharp, deliberately linear production. Even echoes of the controversial Absolution slip through – in scenes with explosions and panicked escape. Only now it is not annoying, but on the contrary – done with taste and without obligations: if you want – you participate, if you don’t want – you pass by. So HITMAN 3 is not just a logical conclusion to the trilogy. It is a farewell bow to everything we have loved in this franchise over the years: from the atmosphere to the freedom of choice and depth of development.
The design of the locations, the fascinating stealth, the attention to detail – everything suggests that the authors have given it their all. Indeed, we have before us an excellent stealth action game, which can rightfully be given high marks and recommended to all fans of the genre. However, with all its advantages, the game is not without its shortcomings. Although they are not critical, they can sometimes spoil the impression. To turn a blind eye to them means to be dishonest. But to lower the final score would still be unfair.
HITMAN 3 – The Worst Part of the Trilogy?
The most annoying thing about HITMAN 3 is that its main problem doesn’t even concern the gameplay. Not the bugs, not the plot, not even the graphics. Everything is much more banal: the game is tightly tied to the Internet. And this is not just “connect for convenience” – this is a real, obsessive dependence on IO Interactive servers, without which the game begins to behave like an offended application. The irony is that the developers themselves abandoned the idea of a “living platform” many years ago after leaving Square Enix. However, their passion for controlling everything online has not gone away. If you want to complete missions, unlock new weapons, level up – welcome to the online. No connection? Then forget about leveling up and contracts. And if the server suddenly glitches right during a mission – forget about saving: restart, again, without explanation. Even after years and dozens of patches, after which the game at least learned to recognize some of the content offline, the feeling that you are a guest of a capricious DRM system does not go away. And this is especially strange, considering that the entire game is purely single-player. Co-op was removed after HITMAN 2, there is no multiplayer, PvP was not planned. So what is all this for?
If internet dependence is the first pain, then transferring progress from previous parts is the second. Moreover, if everything is at least clear with the servers (either it works or it doesn’t), then here you have a quest in the spirit of “find the right link on a third-party site, log into the old account, and then guess how to synchronize everything.” Yes, progress and contracts from previous parts can still be transferred, but the process itself is absolutely not obvious. An ordinary player will have to dig through forums or guides to make everything go smoothly. It’s as if IOI deliberately made the system so confusing that only the most staunch fans will get to their statistics and achievements.

Now about the gameplay. And here everything is very ambiguous. On the one hand, the level design is simply brilliant. Most of the locations in HITMAN 3 amaze with their development, variability and atmosphere. You want to replay them again and again, look for alternative routes, come up with new ways to eliminate targets. This is where the magic of the series manifests itself. On the other hand, as soon as shooting comes into play, everything falls apart. The sounds of shots are flat, shooting from most guns seems inaccurate and unpleasant. Compared to the same Blood Money, where the weapons felt powerful and weighty, HITMAN 3 looks, to put it mildly, pale. The only bright spot is the sniper rifles. They are truly impressive. Each hit is like a small performance: sound, animation, effect – everything is in place. But even here the joy is short-lived: enemies immediately fire from where the shot came from. By some miracle, ordinary guards are able to determine not only the direction, but also, it seems, the caliber of the bullet, the distance to the sniper and his favorite drink. The question for the AI remains open: it is still excessively all-seeing and unnaturally perceptive.
Those who expected HITMAN 3 to at least provide a clear final point for the trilogy will most likely be disappointed. There is a plot, yes. It is even presented with a claim to style, with cinematic cutscenes and hints at “deep themes”. But it is weakly catchy. The story of Agent 47 is banal, predictable and too serious to be funny, but not expressive enough to delight. Some scenes look beautiful, especially against the background of the first two parts. But the overall impression is as if they took the script from the shelf where the “missed ideas” for the second part were lying, and molded the ending from them. The game’s ending is completely déjà vu: its spirit and structure are reminiscent of old missions, but without the charm and freshness that were in the past. In the end, there is a script, but it seems unimportant. And this is especially offensive for fans who were waiting for a worthy conclusion to the story from the first part.
But perhaps the most disturbing observation is the feeling that the series has hit a ceiling. IOI did everything they could: designed the visuals, polished the levels, improved the interface. But there’s no further. The formula “kill the target, disappear into the crowd” has begun to repeat itself. And even the most inventive levels don’t save you from the feeling that you’ve seen it all somewhere before. Of course, theoretically, you can revive the series: improve the shooting, give the smart AI more realistic reactions, change the engine, add physics, and finally revive the environment. But this is all cosmetic. The very basis of the gameplay is what it was in 2016. Fans know how NPCs will react, how cameras will react, where to look for suits and how to complete a mission to the maximum. That’s why HITMAN 3, despite all its high-quality development, leaves a strange aftertaste. This is a great game within its limitations. But it is also a reminder that even the best ideas eventually run out of steam.
HITMAN 3: Is It Worth Playing in 2025 and Why the Game Is Outdated
In January 2014, a little over a year after the release of Hitman: Absolution, IO Interactive addressed its fans with an open letter. It seemed like a standard statement about future plans, full of vague wording about the “real” part of HITMAN. But behind this shell there was something more – a sincere admission of mistakes. This was not a PR move, but an apology. Silent, but tangible. IOI openly made it clear: they knew they had stumbled, and they were ready to fix everything – no matter what.
Today, such appeals from developers are no longer uncommon. Teams apologize, vow to fix everything, looking at players with the eyes of a beaten puppy. But not everyone manages to fulfill their promises. And IOI did it. They did not just bring HITMAN back to life – they did it almost flawlessly.

Of course, everything was not perfect. The idea of a single platform for all seasons quickly fell apart, publishers had to be changed, and the situation with prices and content in Russia is disappointing. But if you close your eyes to everything that happened outside the game itself and focus on the main thing – the content – then we have a gorgeous stealth action and a worthy revival of the cult series. And the finale of the trilogy, HITMAN 3, can be called its pinnacle: excellent levels, exciting gameplay, many pleasant details and sometimes truly impressive visuals. Fans were satisfied – and deservedly so.
Nevertheless, it’s time to say goodbye. Agent 47 showed everything he’s capable of. He’s still in great shape, but another part with the same ideas would be redundant. Better to leave beautifully. Let HITMAN 3 be the last, but bright page in the history of this franchise. A swan song that is remembered with warmth and respect.
