Like Forward Until Dawn, which once neatly guided players to the events of Halo 4, the new series fulfills an important plot function — it introduces the viewer to Jameson Lock, a character destined to play a key role in the development of the Halo universe.
It has already been confirmed that in Halo 5: Guardians, Lock will become a full-fledged playable character. His mission is to find and bring back the “arbitrarily disappeared” One Hundred and Seventeenth, that is, the Master Chief. That’s why he appears in dialogues with the Referee — this scene can be seen both in the trailer and in the updated prologue with the epilogue of Halo 2. Thus, Nightfall is not just a side media product, but an important narrative element that expands the plot and sets the stage for further events in the series.
According to the chronology of the series, Lock is not yet wearing Spartan armor, but he is already involved in serious operations. After a terrorist attack by Covenant radicals, a mysterious deadly virus with a frighteningly selective effect breaks out on one of the thriving human colonies. The investigation leads to an unexpected clue: similar samples were previously recorded only on the wreckage of the Alpha Halo, destroyed by Master Chief in Combat Evolved. Joining forces with a colonel in the local self—defense forces — a former Spartan, by the way – Lock embarks on a dangerous expedition where the stakes are much higher than they seem at first glance.
Of course, drawing far—reaching conclusions from one half-hour episode is a dubious occupation, especially when the exposition is just beginning to unwind. Nevertheless, Nightfall got off to a mixed start, to put it mildly. The plot is still based on overly conditional assumptions, and the visual part is noticeably inferior to expectations. No one expected a web series to be on the level of Marvel blockbusters, but after the more modest budget but much more convincing-looking Forward Until Dawn, this difference is slightly disappointing. There is an atmosphere, but the effect of immersion is still questionable.
The Future of Halo Channel and The Master Chief Collection
In the long run, the Halo Channel looks like a really powerful service, although at the moment it clearly lacks technical polish. The interface periodically “thinks”, playback crashes and video resolution drops.

Nevertheless, the development vector itself seems more than logical. It is possible that in the future The Master Chief Collection will grow into a universal platform for the entire Halo series, with remakes of Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST, as well as new games integrated into a single interface. So far, developers prefer not to make public promises, but this model looks quite viable.
