Valve is in no rush, and that’s great. The story of resistance to the invasion of alien invaders known as the Combine unfolds with the same leisurely excitement as the cult series Lost. After the finale of Episode One, where the heroes raid the Combine tower, they hastily leave City 17 by train. But their escape doesn’t last long: an accident, and the path to the rebel base must be covered on foot, through destroyed landscapes and dangerous ruins. Episode Two is noticeably larger in scale than its predecessor. The duration has increased by about one and a half times, and in terms of development and effort invested, the game can easily put even the original Half-Life 2 to shame. In six hours of playtime, there is not a single place where Valve cut corners or saved money. Everything is done with painstaking attention to detail – and you feel it at every step. This is the standard again.

As Valve has done since the very first Half-Life, the game constantly changes the pace and atmosphere so that the player does not get bored for a second. It all starts in an old Soviet mine. At first, you go alone, in complete silence, until a sudden attack begins. And now you are forced to go deep underground, making your way through hordes of zombies and an ecosystem of antlions. Then – one of the most intense battles in the history of the series. You are tasked with holding the passage leading through four wide tunnels. At hand are only two automatic turrets, a few mines and a couple of allies. Antlions attack in waves: first from one side, then from two, then from three, and finally attack from all directions at once. When the mines run out, the turrets break, and you rush around the battlefield, not even having time to reload – a feeling of complete chaos and adrenaline. And then, suddenly, everything freezes.
Then – a change of scenery. Fresh air, we make our way through the remains of zombies and finally find a two-seater car. It seems that we can exhale. But no: almost immediately we meet a new enemy – hunters. In appearance they resemble miniature striders, but they are much more dangerous. These creatures are not afraid of tight spaces, they are agile, armored and armed like mini-tanks. Hiding from them is useless: the hunter will find you both on the second floor and in the basement. You can only escape in cracks where he physically cannot fit – for example, in the ventilation.
Episode Two, without loud statements, shows what other shooters only talk about: the destructibility of the environment. Not for the player – the gravity gun will not cope with such tasks. But hunters and striders destroy buildings with ease: they break through walls, doors fly apart, barns collapse – the world around is alive and breaks for real.

The final battle is the real culmination of the entire episode. The White Forest base, a former Soviet missile complex, is under attack by an army of striders. Valve goes all out: the map is big, the striders are coming from all sides, and each of them is covered by hunters. You race around the base in a car, switching between a gravity gun and regular weapons, trying to hold the line. At first, the enemies come one by one, then – an avalanche. When the last strider falls apart, you realize that your fingers are shaking and your heart is pounding. This is not just an action game – it is a real test of endurance.

Combine Advisors and Their Hidden Role in the Half-Life Universe
Like any story with a conspiracy in the background, Half-Life has been teasing players for years with the main question: who is really pulling the strings? There are more than one or two mysterious puppet masters, but one of the most mysterious – the mysterious G-Man – still remains without a clear explanation. But in Episode Two, players were finally shown the creatures behind the invasion – the so-called Combine Advisors. It was these alien minds that once terrorized the world of Xen (remember headcrabs, vortigaunts and other evil spirits?), and then, between the events of the first and second parts of Half-Life, captured Earth in just seven hours. Although the game does not talk about the leaders of the entire Combine empire, but rather about representatives of the middle management, their influence is beyond doubt.
Before the final explosion of the Combine tower in Episode One, the Advisors managed to evacuate in escape pods. After that, they turned their attention to Freeman and his companions. And here it became clear – for all their mysticism, these “leaders” do not look very impressive: olive sacks hanging in the air with mechanical tentacles and thin proboscis, somewhat reminiscent of the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers. Obviously, these are not their real bodies, but rather shells. But it is foolish to underestimate them: Combine Advisors have telekinesis, are able to paralyze a person with one thought and calmly deal with him, without resorting to weapons or movement.

As for teleportation, here, oddly enough, not everything is smooth for the Combine. Despite the apparent technical power, their movements between worlds are based on stable portals that require gigantic installations and enormous energy costs. This is fundamentally different from the pulse teleports developed by scientists from Black Mesa and used by Kleiner and Eli Vance. And compared to the Portal Gun from the Aperture Science labs, Combine technology seems completely outdated. This is probably why in Episode Three (if it ever comes out, of course) they will try to capture the mysterious ship “Borey”, mentioned in Episode Two. Obviously, Freeman’s mission is to prevent this.
But if the Combine are a little behind in the field of teleports, then they are doing fine with mind control. One of the first steps of the invaders on Earth is to install the so-called suppression field – an energy field that blocks the human instinct for reproduction. After the invasion of monsters from Xen and the catastrophe of the Seven Hour War, the survivors became the last generation of humanity. However, by the time of the events of Episode One, the field was turned off, and Eli Vance did not miss the opportunity to joke about future grandchildren right in front of Alyx and Freeman.
In addition to the suppression field, the Combine actively use other methods of enslavement:

chemical exposure through water and food – substances that suppress the will and sense of protest;

erasing memories and personality, which facilitates subsequent control;

recruitment into the army through complete psychological and physiological suppression.
This is why it is impossible to meet defectors among Combine soldiers – they simply have neither the will nor the memory to resist.
Episode Two Gameplay Review
Apart from a couple of new enemies — acid antlions and hunters — and car rides, there are no major changes to the gameplay in Episode Two. And you know what? That’s not a big deal. All the mechanics that were laid down in Half-Life 2 still work great and provide scope for real gaming creativity.
Episode Two continues the series’ tradition — it’s still a shooter where the player is not forced into a single path. Here you can experiment as you please. Want to give your enemies a good beating? No problem, you have an arsenal at your disposal — from shotguns to a crossbow. Do you like to play with a gravity gun? Here are boxes, here are explosive barrels, here are circular saws, which fly into enemies especially effectively. And if you don’t want to get into trouble, you can watch from the sidelines while your partners do all the dirty work. You can set up an ambush, you can slip through a difficult section by car, you can even play the episode in the style of “I was passing by.” The question here is not “how to get through”, but “how to get through it more interestingly”. For the first time since the first part, humor appears again in the game. Of course, this is not the same level as in Portal or Team Fortress 2, but the sarcastic remarks of the Vortigaunt are a real gift for those who closely follow the series. His comments sound like polite praise, but if you listen – and behind the veil of streamlined phrases hides a sarcastic tease.

Although Viktor Antonov, the author of the visual style of Half-Life 2, is no longer involved in the project (he is currently busy with “The Crossing” – a new action game from the creators of Dark Messiah), Episode Two looks even better than its predecessor. Yes, from a technological point of view, the game is a little behind, but in terms of artistic execution, it is still beyond praise. Sometimes it is simply breathtaking: you enter a concrete hangar from which missiles are launched, and sunbeams pour through the glass, mountains in the distance, and all this looks so atmospheric that you want to applaud while standing. They weren’t just making “another game” here, they were giving it their all.
The nature was especially memorable. No technological wonders like in Crysis, but those same fir trees and mountains evoke an almost meditative calm. In the finale, we see two rebels who are just sitting and enjoying the view. And you yourself involuntarily slow down, wanting to sit down next to them, catch your breath and just be in this moment. A very rare feeling for a shooter.
But the plot… finally moved forward. Even if without much zeal on the part of the scriptwriters. Reminds me of the TV series “Lost” – instead of clear explanations, we are given hints, half-phrases, details. This is interesting, but it doesn’t always work: the player needs something specific to hold attention. So the developers made a move – they sacrificed an important character. Just one, but still. It’s a little sad, because in the first Half-Life everyone died for real, scientifically. Here, each hero is protected because too much is tied to them. This is no longer just a game – it is a whole universe, where each figure is worth its weight in gold. And yes, this is not a series where you can afford to throw out heroes in batches.
