Hacknet was released on August 13, 2015 and became a real surprise for the players. Behind its creation is the little-known team Team Fractal Alligator, about which almost nothing was heard before the release of the project. Information about the development process is also shrouded in mystery: it is only known that at an early stage of testing the game had multiplayer, but it was abandoned, most likely due to difficulties with implementation.
As a result, we were presented with not just another indie release, but a dynamic arcade hacker action game that managed to surprise both with its genre presentation and atmosphere. But let’s get this straight.

Tasks in Hacknet and its Labyrinths add—on are not just “click a button and go through.” From simple hacks and file theft to complex investigations, you’ll have to look for security holes, sneak into secure networks with dozens of servers, and work with strong encryption. You’ll be reading documents that shouldn’t be available, extracting confidential software from archives, digging through memory dumps in search of the right line, and fending off other people’s hacker attacks—all in the spirit of a true digital detective story. At the same time, Labyrinths provides much tougher challenges than the main campaign: you are immediately thrown into hot water and expected to apply all the accumulated experience in solving puzzles.
Hacknet navigation is based on commands, so a simple tip is to keep a notebook nearby or take a picture of the screen with your phone camera. Almost every puzzle is a story about overcoming network protection for the sake of a single important line of data. First, you need to open the ports: run executable files from the command line, get administrator rights, and only then view, move, rename, delete, or copy files and scan neighboring network nodes. This is a sequence of actions, and the success of the hack depends on how you build it.

The key difficulty is executable utilities. They not only waste your time, but also “eat up” part of the system memory during operation. Therefore, finding the optimal program launch order is almost like solving another puzzle: saving memory and time is often critical. And if you delay, hostile tracers will quickly complicate your life by blocking connections, catching signals, and generally interfering with progress. Sometimes worse happens: your user interface may be deleted, and then you will have to urgently get out of the trap.
The hacking process itself on Hacknet is exciting: you can hear the tapping of keys, lines of code are burning, and it really hits with adrenaline. But the repeatability of the basic elements in the basic puzzles does its job — after a few hours of the same type of operations, some of the fun shrinks and turns into a routine. In this regard, Labyrinths is a fresh mouthful: every hack there brings a new variety and gets rid of the monotony that sometimes spoils the impression of the main campaign.
In short, Hacknet is a film about the era of digital mysteries, where thinking and consistency are more important than reflexes. Labyrinths adds complexity and freshness, without letting you relax for a second.

Hacknet’s plot and gameplay
In Hacknet, the main campaign introduces the player to a hacker group called Entropy. This community was once associated with the mysteriously deceased Bit, and now you have to work with his associates to find out what really happened. The addition of Labyrinths slightly changes the angle of view: you move away from Entropy and dive into another secret mission with a new team of hackers, and later return to the original investigation. You can start the “Mazes” at any time during the main story, but the pleasure of the game largely depends on how deeply you have already immersed yourself in the mechanics of Hacknet and mastered the role of a virtual hacker.
The plot of Hacknet expertly balances between the tense atmosphere of the dark side of the Internet and a light, almost ironic narrative. Among the random IRC logs, you will find both primitive troll jokes and philosophical debates about the nature of society. At the same time, you are constantly drawn into a confrontation with corporate structures, against which the story of your partner’s death is gradually revealed. The further you go, the higher the stakes become — and the clearer the feeling that you have crossed the line that it would be better not to go beyond. This creates a special tension that doesn’t let go until the credits roll.

While the main campaign focuses on personal emails, in Labyrinths the focus is shifted to teamwork and live interaction through IRC chats. During missions, messages from fellow hackers constantly flash on the screen: some contain important information, others contain sarcastic comments and jokes. This flow of messages gives the missions a sense of dynamics and engagement, but there is one disadvantage: the player cannot respond to the interlocutors. Because of this, it sometimes feels like you’re more of an observer than a full-fledged team member.
Features that distinguish Labyrinths:
-
team hacking format with constant IRC chat;
-
A combination of critical messages and humor;
-
a sense of the team’s lively presence, even if there is no way to respond directly.
Closer to the finale, the “Mazes” noticeably slow down the pace. Where the tension only increases in the main story of Hacknet — with counterhackers and tracking programs — in addition, the climax seems somewhat crumpled. A sharp rise in the stakes is followed by an equally rapid decline, and the ending does not evoke the emotions that you would expect from such a finale.
Nevertheless, Hacknet and especially the Labyrinths add-on are able to immerse. Playing in a dark room with headphones on and listening to a soundtrack full of heavy beats and dark synth rhythms means getting as close as possible to the “Hollywood hacking experience” that many dream of. The puzzles in the game are inventive: they are difficult, but not overloaded, and that’s what makes the process so exciting. And “Mazes” add depth and variety, expanding the formula of the original.
Yes, the plot climax could have been stronger, but still Hacknet: Labyrinths remains an exciting cyber adventure that will take you through intricate virtual tunnels and give you the feeling that you really found yourself inside the digital universe of hackers.
