When you play a truly amazing game, the dream of a sequel inevitably begins to bloom within you. But reality doesn’t always live up to expectations: developers sometimes lose sight of what made fans fall in love with their project. As a result, the second game can be a pale shadow of the original and even ruin the experience. That’s what happened to me with Hotline Miami 2—the sequel lost the magic that made the first game iconic.
But with Guacamelee! 2, things were completely different. From the very first minutes, I felt how much I’d missed this vibrant universe. The playthrough was completely captivating, and I greeted the ending with a smile, finishing the game 100%. Now we can only hope that what lies ahead isn’t just a duology, but a full-fledged trilogy.

Guacamelee! 2 picks up players seven years after the conclusion of the first game. Juan, once the scourge of skeletons and savior of the Mexiverse, is now a completely different man. He married El Presidente’s daughter, has two children, has a growing belly, and is living a quiet family life. He shops, helps around the house—it would seem that adventures are a thing of the past. But one day, while simply going out to buy avocados, he sees strange black squares in the sky. Almost immediately, hordes of skeletons descend on the village. Juan realizes: the peace is over, and the Mexiverse itself is once again under threat.
The treacherous Salvador becomes the main villain in Guacamelee! 2. His goal is to seize three relics and be the first to reach the sacred guacamole. To stop the villain, Juan must travel to the Darkest Dimension, run through vast locations, and wrest the artifacts from his grasp. Along the way, you’ll encounter dozens of jokes, witty dialogue, cameos from characters from the first Guacamelee!, and numerous references to other games and genres. The story is fun and lighthearted, but the real thrill awaits those who dare to explore the secret areas, where the most inventive discoveries are hidden.
After years without adventure, Juan has almost forgotten his wrestling moves. At first, he can only jump and swing his fists. But a new luchador mask restores his strength: he must find statues again and learn to destroy blocks of different colors with familiar strikes. Red barriers can be broken with his signature rooster uppercut, green ones with a frog-like downward leap, and towards the end, the hero masters wall running and flying along the ground.

Eagle Flight deserves special attention—the ability to cling to white dots in the air and fly higher or overcome dangerous areas. This technique turns platforming into a dynamic challenge: sometimes you’ll have to run away from lava, and sometimes you’ll have to climb to the top, jumping from point to point without ever touching the ground.
But the real surprise awaits after a couple of hours of play: Juan can now transform into a chicken at almost any moment. While in the first Guacamelee! the feathered hero seemed helpless, here he’s become a fully-fledged fighter. His paw attacks are more powerful, enemies can be lifted and thrown, and the tenacity of his claws allows him to climb walls and leap from one inclined surface to another. Furthermore, the chicken learns his own moves—a slide and a diagonal dash—making him incredibly mobile.

The gameplay constantly presents new challenges: sometimes you need to switch between the worlds of the living and the dead at the right moment, and sometimes you need to instantly transform into a chicken to slip through a narrow passage and avoid falling into lava. The developers turned every room into a puzzle: in some places, stripes on the screen alter the environment, turning fiery lava into water, while in others, gusts of wind push the hero into the abyss, and only skillful switching of worlds will help him survive.
Guacamelee! 2 is more than just a sequel. It’s a bright, playful, and yet truly captivating platformer where old friend Juan returns to the fray, and with him, players are once again immersed in a Mexican tale full of humor, references, and puzzles.
Guacamelee! 2 Battles and Bosses
Reaching the finale of Guacamelee! 2 isn’t difficult, but unlocking alternate endings requires you to once again search for secret areas with insanely difficult challenges. Sometimes they’re easier than they seem, but more often than not, they require nerves of steel and force you to recall your entire arsenal of curse words. This is especially true when the level isn’t broken down into stages, forcing you to play through it from start to finish with no room for error. However, this is precisely what gives you a special feeling of triumph: each new attempt brings you closer to victory, and when you finally overcome a challenge, a new location opens up, filled with skeletons and fresh battles.
Furthermore, the game features other hidden areas containing chests containing health and stamina boosts. Reaching them can be challenging: puzzles require you to switch between worlds, destroy spherical enemies with timers, or transform from the familiar Juan into a fighting chicken on the fly. Conveniently, the map still shows all unexplored areas, making missed caches and chests easy to find.

The main new feature in Guacamelee! 2 is the upgrade system. While upgrades were previously purchased at checkpoints with gold, everything is now tied to trainers. Each offers their own skill tree: one improves chicken abilities, another provides bonuses for long combos, and the fitness trainer teaches new finishing moves—for example, instead of a simple throw, you can perform a devastating backbend.
All upgrades are purchased through the menu, so there’s no need to return to trainers. However, gold isn’t enough to fully upgrade: to enhance a specific move, you’ll need to complete an additional task. For example, if you want to make a sliding move even more powerful, kill a set number of enemies with it, and only then will a new version of the attack be unlocked. Some upgrades are incredibly useful (for example, those that grant extra gold for combos exceeding 25 hits), while others are less noticeable, but the system itself motivates you to use your entire combat arsenal.
And you’ll need to use it often. Enemies in Guacamelee! 2 have become more diverse: familiar monsters have been updated graphically, and new ones have been added—magicians who buff allies and summon reinforcements, spider-like skeletons in narrow corridors, and enemies with transparent fields that slow the hero’s movement. Thanks to responsive controls, vibrant graphics, and a variety of moves, battles remain exciting until the very end. The only disappointment is that the final boss is noticeably less difficult than Kalaki from the first game.
Guacamelee! 2: Pros and Cons
Guacamelee! 2 is exactly the sequel we’d expect from this beloved Metroidvania. The game doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel: the developers retained everything we loved about the first game, but added enough new elements to make the adventure feel fresh and engaging. This time around, we’ll experience a new storyline, signature humor, new enemies, and additional moves for Juan. Challenging challenges make the gameplay even more exciting, and the updated graphics are noticeably pleasing to the eye: the environments are richer in detail, and the lighting gives each sunny location a unique atmosphere.

Playing on the hard difficulty becomes a true challenge for those aiming for the platinum rank. And while a third game is still just a dream, a sequel like this makes it even more exciting.
Guacamelee! 2 is an example of how to make sequels right: not by breaking a working formula, but by improving and expanding it.
What I liked:
-
The recognizable style and sparkling humor that still work;
-
The updated combat system with new moves and enemies;
-
Playing as a chicken has become more than just a fun bonus, but a truly useful and interesting part of the gameplay;
-
The room-based puzzles remain just as engaging and inventive.
What I didn’t like:
-
The final boss was too easy;
-
There’s no online co-op again—something fans really miss.

Guacamelee! 2 is a veritable explosion of color, humor, and Mexican traditions, where every moment is filled with energy. Here, you’ll see the return of Juan—an ordinary guy in a lujador mask who’s once again tasked with saving the world. But don’t expect a dark story—the game sets a light, ironic tone from the very beginning: the enemies are absurd and charismatic, the worlds are whimsical, and the adventures feel more like a bright cartoon, where seriousness and humor coexist.
Each level is like a new chapter in a Mexican fairy tale. Colorful landscapes, strange creatures, and dynamic fights make each playthrough a true celebration. The fights here aren’t just a test of your speed and reflexes; they’re a colorful spectacle in which every move is a joy. And the further you progress, the more you realize that Guacamelee! 2 captivates you not only with its mechanics but also with an atmosphere that’s irresistible.
