The announcement of Grim Fandango Remastered came as a real surprise to fans of the classics. The legendary adventure, once enjoyed on older PCs, now returns in a remastered form, ready to capture the hearts of a new audience. Despite more than fifteen years having passed since its release, the game has lost none of its atmosphere and charm. On the contrary, today it feels like a true gem of the genre: a unique story, an inimitable style, and an experience that leaves behind vivid emotions and lasting nostalgia.

Grim Fandango, released in 1998, was held hostage by bad timing. Its release coincided with the appearance of real giants on the market — Half-Life, Fallout 2, Baldur’s Gate and Metal Gear Solid. In such a company, even a bright and original game was difficult to make itself known. According to Tim Shafer, the founder of the studio Double Fine, Grim Fandango sold only about half a million copies. For comparison: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, released that fall, sold 7.6 million copies.
And yet modest sales did not become a verdict. Grim Fandango quickly gained the status of a cult game: it was warmly received by both critics and ordinary players, and its unusual style and charismatic characters were remembered for years. Over time, the adventure got a second life — a remaster with updated graphics, more user-friendly controls and access to Sony consoles gave a chance to new generations of players. Now, those who have only heard of the legendary quest can personally walk the path of Manny Calavera in the afterlife.

And this world, despite the abundance of skeletons and the dead, is full of colors and movement. The Department of Death works here, whose staff helps souls get to the Ninth World, the last abode of all the dead. The fate of the newly deceased depends on how he lived during his lifetime. The righteous receive a ticket on a luxury express that will take them there in a matter of minutes. But sinners have to walk, covering a long four-year journey.
The main character, Agent Manny Calavera, can’t boast of luck. He always gets the most difficult clients who don’t even need a walking stick. At the same time, his colleague Domino gets all the perfect clients and enjoys the privileges. The bosses are unhappy with Manny’s work, and he himself is suffocating in the routine and feels that his “afterlife career” does not lead anywhere. In an attempt to change his fate, he decides to intercept an important client, but this step triggers a series of events full of dangers, unexpected twists and branded “afterlife” humor, for which fans have come to love Grim Fandango so much.

Grim Fandango’s Music, Plot, and Atmosphere: What’s the Secret to Its Charm?
Despite the fact that Grim Fandango has long crossed the threshold of its twentieth anniversary, it cannot be called an “old lady from the nineties.” Just press the Tab key and you will instantly switch between the original and the remaster. The difference is striking: soft, realistic lighting, clearer textures, and a generally neat picture. But the main thing is that the spirit of the game has remained the same. The work of LucasArts artists still looks stylish and organic even today, as if time has no control over it.
In 1998, few people had heard of large-format monitors, so the original was launched in 4 format.:3. In the remaster, of course, you can set 16:9, but the result is questionable: the image simply stretches, and Manny turns into a “bedside table”. It’s much more pleasant to play in your native 4:3 — but with decorative patterns on the sides. These frames not only do not interfere, but also add a cozy “lamp-like” mood, as if you have returned to those very nineties.
The soundtrack also got a second life. The main melodies were recorded by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the rest were reworked by Peter McConnell himself, the composer of the original game. The music was inspired by Mexican folk motifs and classics of Spanish cinema, so the sounds of charango and other Latin American instruments are organically interwoven into the orchestral canvas. The atmosphere turned out to be so authentic that it seems as if the music was written not for a game, but for a real film noir.

Actually, there are plenty of Mexican references here. The events unfold on November 2, the Day of the Dead, and the characters look like traditional toys and decorations created for this holiday. The main character was voiced by Cuban—born actor Tony Plana, and his voice perfectly conveys Manny’s charisma – both ironic and charming. Jazz, noir and Latin American flavor permeate every scene, every line. So much so that after a couple of hours of playing, there is a desire to stay in this world forever. The irony is that sooner or later we will all end up in the world of the dead.…
It is worth remembering about management. In the original, the so-called “tank” control was used: the hero could either walk or turn, but not do it at the same time. In fast-paced action games like Tomb Raider, it turned into a nerve-wracking experience. In Grim Fandango, this approach didn’t break the game, but it still caused some inconvenience. Over time, fans released mods with alternative control schemes, and Double Fine included them directly in the remaster. So today you can enjoy the classics without technical compromises.
All the pros and cons of Grim Fandango Remastered
In the updated version of Grim Fandango, the controls have finally become intuitive. Now you can move around the locations using the mouse — no extra keys, just click and the hero is already walking in the right direction. The keyboard is used only for the sake of curiosity: I pressed Tab — and you can immediately see how the game looked before. But those who crave challenges and collect achievements on Steam will have to take on the challenge and go through the story with the old, “tank” control scheme. According to the developers themselves, this is exactly what Tim Shafer insisted on. PS Vita owners can even play by controlling the hero through the touch screen.
The game creators’ comments embedded in the remaster are particularly enjoyable. An icon with a firecracker appears in almost every scene, and if you click on it, the developers share stories about the creation of Grim Fandango. They talk about inspiration, difficulties, and controversial decisions that had to be made. For fans of the original, this is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes details.

To be honest, I don’t want to look for cons in Grim Fandango Remastered at all. Those intricate puzzles? They are not here — it is enough to carefully examine the objects and think about every action. The criticism of 1998 about inconvenient management is a thing of the past: now this problem has been solved. The only thing that might surprise you a little is the lack of auto—saves. But I can’t bring myself to call this a serious drawback. After all, this is a rare representative of the genre, created with a soul. Today, such adventures are almost not done.
Advantages of the remaster:
-
A re-release of one of the best quests in history;
-
vivid plot and charismatic characters;
-
improved graphics and atmosphere;
-
choose between two control schemes.
Minuses:
-
lack of auto-saves.

This game is like an old black-and-white film, only with the bright colors of the Mexican Day of the Dead. There is a lot of irony, light sadness and humor in it, which makes the characters lively and memorable.
