Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is a great example of what a re-release should be: not formal, but truly improved. It is especially nice that owners of the original version on PC received the update for free – a worthy gesture from the developers. But PS4 users, albeit for a small fee, got access to a dynamic team action with RPG elements, where you can choose one of five heroes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, skills and play style. The choice really affects the gameplay, and this makes the passage more diverse. The game still feels like an inexpensive project – the graphics and animations do not reach the AAA level, and some old bugs remain. But it is worth admitting: the developers really tried and made a number of important improvements that are noticeable from the very beginning.
One of the first noticeable updates is the reworked navigation. Now, instead of a boring hub, the player sees a drawn map, where the heroes’ path into the depths of the dungeons is clearly traced. These aren’t just cosmetics — the updated approach helps you feel your progress better and creates a tabletop RPG atmosphere. The number of levels has also increased significantly: from nine to more than twenty, including boss fights, each of which presents a separate tactical challenge.

In addition to the main story, there are also side challenges. They are not mandatory, but they are very useful, especially if you want to earn more gold. And money plays a key role here. Gold is used to buy equipment, artifacts, and other useful items that make life much easier in battle. And if the store was previously inconvenient, now everything is reduced to an intuitive menu that opens right between levels — quickly and without unnecessary transitions.
Each improvement is aimed at making the game more comfortable and interesting. Yes, Gauntlet is still not perfect, but now it feels like a solid, solid cooperative action game that is nice to return to — especially in the company of friends.

What’s new in Gauntlet: Slayer Edition?
Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is not just an updated version of the cult team action, but an attempt to rethink familiar game elements. The authors made a number of changes, preserving the spirit of the original, but slightly shifting the emphasis in the gameplay. Each hero still enters the battlefield not empty-handed. In addition to the main weapon – be it a bow, sword, staff or crossbow – the player can use relics and talismans that enhance combat abilities. But if in the original version the use of relics consumed potions, then in Slayer Edition this binding was abandoned.
Now relics can be activated without additional costs – this gives more freedom in battle and allows you to build new tactics. But talismans, on the contrary, require a potion to activate, but the reward for this is much more tangible: you get a new active skill. For example, you can throw a potion like a grenade, causing area damage, or give a regular shot a destructive force capable of piercing enemies. Each character has their own unique set of skills, and the variety of relics and their effects gives a huge scope for experimentation. The choice has really become wider – more magic items, more weapons and more unusual mechanics.

An important change also affected the leveling system. If previously completing tasks automatically strengthened the character through the growth of passive skills, now only gold is given for quests. This money can be spent on buying new items that expand the hero’s combat potential, but do not simply make him “stronger”. Now the player chooses how to develop the character – improve ranged combat, focus on controlling enemies, or use potions as a tactical tool. It all depends on your play style and what items you prefer to carry with you.
For example:
-
One bow can be effective in close combat, causing strong damage to enemies at close range.
-
Another – slows down enemies, allowing you to keep your distance.
-
A shield can not so much block damage as throw enemies back.
Such items do not always directly enhance characteristics, but they open up tactical advantages. And this is the main advantage of the new system – it makes the gameplay more flexible.
An invisible merchant has appeared in the game, from whom you can buy outfits for your character. Clothes do not affect combat qualities in any way, but they allow you to stand out among other players. This is a purely cosmetic improvement – for those who want to not only survive, but also do it in a big way.
Despite the improvements, Slayer Edition has not gotten rid of the problems familiar from previous versions. There are almost no plot or structural innovations. All battles take place in closed arenas, where a squad of heroes methodically mows down waves of enemies and destroys their spawn points. Sometimes battles are diluted with special effects – for example, a fiery rain begins, the location plunges into darkness, or Death begins to hunt you, which is impossible to fight off. These elements are designed to add spice, but do not bring much variety to the gameplay.

In addition, the visual component also remained within the framework of the familiar – the environments are not much different from each other, often repeat themselves, and by the middle of the game they become tiresome. Since the mission structure itself hasn’t changed, the attempt to stretch out the gameplay seems questionable. The same type of minion fights leading to the obligatory boss fights could have been more interesting if they had been more varied, but that’s not what happened.
The developers have added two new modes that can prolong the interest:
-
Endless Dungeon is a real paradise for grind lovers. The player will have to clear floor after floor, collecting gold and equipment. No finale – only a fight for survival.
-
Colosseum is a mode in which players fight in small arenas, fighting off powerful waves of enemies. For successful survival, you can get especially valuable rewards.
These modes add replayability and allow you to test your skills for strength in high-difficulty conditions.
Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is not a revolution, but it is a noticeable step forward compared to the original. An improved system of relics and talismans, greater freedom in the development of the hero, a variety of equipment and new modes make the game more lively and variable. However, the monotony of arenas, the lack of new scenarios and visual dullness still prevent the game from revealing its full potential.
Is Gauntlet Slayer Edition worth playing?
When you look at the updated version of the game in the Slayer Edition format, the first thing that comes to mind is that everything has become noticeably stronger and more solid, especially when compared to the original. This is still a team shooter, where the main thrill is in joint battles, teamwork and competent use of the capabilities of each of the five characters. But now the game has additional weight – thanks to deeper systems, an expanded arsenal and content designed for repeated playthroughs. Each hero has access to new types of weapons, relics and talismans, which allows you to flexibly customize your fighter to the desired style of play: you want to be an aggressive berserker or a cautious tactician – please. This noticeably refreshes the gameplay and gives the opportunity to play in a new way, even if you were already familiar with the original.

However, not everything here is delightful. The levels still feel quite straightforward: the structure of tasks is often repeated, and the design of the locations is rarely memorable. Boss fights are another weak point. Most of them are already familiar from the previous version, and the new ones do not stand out much in either mechanics or visuals. So in terms of the “wow effect” the game still loses a little. But the main advantage of Slayer Edition is the additional content, which gives the game a second wind. An endless dungeon, where each next floor is more difficult, and the “Colosseum” mode, in which you can test your strength in a series of battles, greatly increase replayability. Especially in the company of friends – then the monotonous levels are perceived easier, and the mood is much better.
Slayer Edition Advantages:
-
Updated combat system and leveling
The refactoring of battles is noticeable: blows feel more powerful, skills are leveled up more logically, and the battle dynamics themselves have become more lively. -
Expanded arsenal of weapons and equipment
Thanks to the new items, the game no longer runs out of steam after a couple of hours. There is always something to try and experiment with. -
Endless dungeon and “Coliseum” mode
These activities are perfect for those who like a challenge and don’t mind spending an extra hour or two in battles. -
Best impression in co-op
With friends, the game reveals itself in all its glory – co-op gives more emotions and smooths out the shortcomings.
The flaws that still bother me:
-
Predictability and repetition of levels
Even with the new content, the structure of most missions is pretty standard. There are few surprises – everything is according to a long-familiar template. -
Weak visual design of locations
Some maps seem dull or not atmospheric enough. There is a lack of uniqueness and stylistic development. -
Old and inexpressive bosses
Enemies at the “boss” rank rarely evoke emotions: there are no special mechanics, interesting phases or visual wow-effect.
If you’re a fan of the original or just looking for a co-op shooter that doesn’t get boring in a couple of hours, then Slayer Edition is a good choice. Especially if you’re not playing alone. Yes, the game still has some flaws, but the improved development system, expanded weapons, and new modes make it much more attractive. The original wasn’t as balanced and intense.
