Over the past ten years, a special genre has emerged in the gaming industry — job simulators. Not about pilots or racers, as it used to be, but about very mundane professions: bus driver, miner, builder or even loader. These games do not try to impress with graphics or action — they are about something else. There are no competitions or battles, but there is an opportunity to feel the routine and subtleties of ordinary work. If you want to chop down a tree or operate an excavator — please, without getting up from the couch.
Gradually, the genre reached the point of absolute absurdity — take, for example, Rock Simulator, where you are… just a stone. Yes, yes, literally. But who said that it all ended there? On the contrary, interest in such projects is only growing. The new part of Farming Simulator from Giants Software is the best proof of this. More people play it than the fresh Battlefield. And if you think that a farming simulator is boring, try it yourself. Perhaps it will be this one that will draw you in more than any shooter.

What does a farmer do today? It has long been not only plowing and sowing manually. Modern agriculture is a real business in which even a small team can manage a large farm if they have technology, experience and a little patience in their arsenal. Farming Simulator 22 (FS22) invites everyone to try on the role of a farmer – and not just play, but really immerse themselves in the agricultural routine. In the classic mode, without online battles and mods, a huge scope opens up for the player: you can grow crops, care for animals, engage in logging and even develop logistics. All that holds you back at the beginning is the starting budget. But renting equipment and bank loans will help to cope with this limitation. Even on a high difficulty level, you can successfully build your own business – if you want to.
The first step is buying land. The question immediately arises: what to grow? From wheat to cotton – there is a large choice. But don’t be fooled: despite the impressive variety of crops, the differences in gameplay are often minimal. Yes, grapes have special requirements and require specialized equipment, but the harvesting of most crops is not that different. Universal work, like plowing, feels the same. It is much more interesting to study the equipment: it is this that reveals the depth of the gameplay, and not the names of the crops.

The main activities here are cultivating fields, breeding animals and working with the forest. And also – transporting all this stuff. There is no automatic delivery “from the field – straight to the store” here, so you will have to organize transport yourself. The maps are small, not up to the scale of Euro Truck Simulator, but your own cart or truck will definitely come in handy.
What is really impressive is the equipment. FS22 has hundreds of units: from classic tractors to the most powerful combines. And all with real brands. Even if you are far from agriculture, like me, the sight of many familiar and not so familiar logos is surprising. And for fans, it’s simply heaven here: you can find your favorite models, like John Deere tractors or Rostselmash equipment. And these are not just decorations, but real working tools, on which much depends.

Machinery in Farming Simulator 22
When you first find yourself on a virtual farm, it may seem that all these tractors, combines and loaders are just decoration. But no: every machine here works for real. Any tractor turns into a universal fighter – it all depends on what equipment you connect to it. If you want to plow – hook up a plow, it’s time to sow – take a seeder, you need to harvest – connect a mower or a bucket. And this is not just hardware – almost every tool has its own functions: plows fold, headers are adjustable in angle and reach, and sprayers can be compactly folded if not in use. And the loading equipment is real engineering magic.

Here is just a small part of what you can do with equipment in Farming Simulator:
-
Plow fields with a plow
-
Cultivate the soil before sowing
-
Sow a variety of crops
-
Mow and dry grass for hay
-
Transport crops, bales or logs
-
Spray fertilizers or chemicals
-
Remove manure and use it as a resource
The developers of Farming Simulator were clearly not lazy: if you want more realism, please, turn on the view from the cabin, set up manual gear shifting, blink the turn signals, use the pedals and steering wheel. Here you can really feel like a farmer, and not just a player with a gamepad. But don’t expect fun arcade entertainment. The gameplay is work, and quite routine. At first, you watch with interest how the plow is beautifully laid out or how the grain pours out of the combine into the truck. And then the real farming begins: a tractor crawls across the field with a cultivator, drives to the edge, turns around – and all in a circle, to the last furrow.
Most of the tasks in the game are the same – harvesting, sowing, plowing – everything is built according to the same scenario. Only sometimes more unusual activities appear. For example, haymaking: just mowing the grass is not enough, you need to stir it, dry it, and then collect it into bales – and all this with different equipment. Or logging – there you will need to operate a saw, a loader and work with logs carefully and accurately.
But livestock farming is a simpler matter. Deliver feed and water, remove manure (by the way, an excellent fertilizer for the fields) – and you can expect profit from the sale of eggs, milk or wool. Exciting? Maybe. Does it work? Definitely.
Gameplay Farming Simulator 22
Farming Simulator 22 is not just a simulator of a quiet rural life with endless fields and unobtrusive music. Behind the external simplicity lies a real economic strategy, in which the player will have to make dozens of decisions – from buying land to setting up production chains.
Yes, if you want to relax, you can turn on contracts and just carry out the instructions of other farmers. Everything is ready there: you are given a task and equipment, you do not need to delve into anything. But the most exciting thing begins when you decide to build your own farm from scratch.

You start with a small plot, and then – freedom. If you want – plow the field. If you want – put a pen for sheep, build hangars, start processing milk or grain. Farming Simulator 22 encourages those who think about the future: a well-built production line can bring much more profit than simply trading in crops.
On your land you can:
-
plow fields and sow different crops,
-
breed animals and take care of them,
-
build warehouses and hangars for storing crops and equipment,
-
launch processing of products (for example, make flour, butter, cheese),
-
develop logistics and sell finished goods at favorable prices.
Now the game has a change of seasons, and this is not just a decorative feature. Each crop has its own planting and harvesting times. In winter, the fields are covered with snow, and you have to decide whether to clear them with a snowplow or wait for spring. And weather conditions such as rain or fog add realism and a little chaos to the daily routine.
However, the picture sometimes gives away the age of the engine: the equipment is drawn decently, but the buildings and vegetation look simple. Crops, for example, do not always react to a passing tractor – this knocks you out of the atmosphere a little. Of the three maps available at launch, I personally liked the American one the most. Spacious, with convenient logistics, without unnecessary fuss. But the European ones (France and the Alps), although beautiful, turned out to be not very practical – narrow roads, hills, bridges and rivers significantly complicate the movement and operation of large equipment.
Singleplayer and Multiplayer in Farming Simulator 22
In general, to be honest, in Farming Simulator 22 you don’t so much “play” as you actually spend time — in the good sense of the word. Yes, there are convenient time acceleration settings (they can be changed right in the process), and if you want, you can scroll through an entire game year in just a few hours. But this doesn’t make the situation much easier: a farmer always has a lot of things to do. Playing alone is not for the busy. Even if you decide to just clear a medium-sized field, get ready to spend a good evening in the game. And if you are serious about earning money and developing your farm, expanding your land, buying equipment and building processing chains — be prepared for a marathon.
Hired workers help a little. They cope well with basic tasks like plowing, but they don’t always work stably: they can get stuck, miss a section, and in general behave like typical bots. The only good thing is that their labor is cheap. But the economy in the game at the start is more of a hindrance than a help. The prices for equipment and buildings are steep, and the profit from production is modest. It is better to adjust the settings of the economic model to suit yourself, otherwise development can drag on for weeks.

A cooperative leaves a completely different impression. If you gather a group of like-minded people, you can organize a real digital collective farm – distribute roles, buy equipment together, manage processes, and all this is really exciting. If you want, you can even rent a dedicated server (up to 16 players), but, as usual, for an additional fee.
And yes, FS22 is no longer just a “tractor simulator”. The price of the game is quite at the level of large AAA projects. But since sales are growing steadily, and the community does not object to the price tag, then perhaps the simulator has really grown into a full-fledged blockbuster – only in a rural setting.
Is Farming Simulator 22 Worth Playing in 2025?
Is it worth playing Farming Simulator 22 if you have avoided similar games before? Surprisingly, yes. I didn’t expect to get carried away, but the game has drawn me in. Of course, this is far from an evening of entertainment or an action game where everything flies, explodes and changes every minute. FS22 is about calm, routine and thoughtfulness. About farm life with its worries, equipment and seasonal cycles. Here you don’t just press buttons, but immerse yourself in the process, where every decision – from buying a tractor to choosing a crop to sow – matters.

And yet, this is an amateur’s game. It will appeal to those who adore agricultural machinery, are interested in agribusiness or are simply looking for a meditative experience where they can disconnect from the hustle and bustle. But even for them, Farming Simulator 22 makes one important requirement – free time. This is, in essence, a labor simulator: here you need to not just play, but work – albeit in the virtual world. But strategic depth is not revealed immediately: first there are hard everyday life, then there is conscious growth.
Pros:
-
Realistic technology and equipment taken from real life
-
Complete freedom of action – if you want, build a livestock complex, if you want – grow corn for sale
-
Deep strategic element, if you play for a long time
Cons:
-
Graphics could be more modern
-
The economic system sometimes looks illogical or unfinished
-
In a single game, development is slow and takes a lot of time
