Who would have thought that 2019 would be full of unexpected events? The COVID pandemic, the rise and fall of cryptocurrency, the emergence of ChatGPT, and the sudden renaming of iconic football games all seem to have taken reality on a new, strange path. While eFootball seems to be deliberately destroying everything that PES once stood for, FC 24, on the contrary, is confidently and smoothly moving through an era of change. It is not the radical upheaval one could have dreamed of, but it is not just a standard update with new kits and ratings. FC 24 really feels like a forward movement – maybe not a revolution, but certainly a step into the future.

I often find myself thinking about that “forward movement” — something that can’t be expressed in numbers, but is felt almost intuitively. It was in FC 24 that this feeling became truly noticeable for me. EA, of course, likes to throw around big words, talking about billions of new animations based on Hypermotion and artificial intelligence that turns real player movements into virtual ones. We hear about this every year. But now — for the first time in a long time, though — the difference is really noticeable.
Try spinning with the ball in place with the technical Spaniard Gavi, and then do the same with the massive Haaland. Previously, such differences seemed to exist at the level of intentions, but not execution. Now — it’s as if the seams between animations have been erased, and the game for each footballer feels exactly as it should be. Almost as if technologies like DLSS brought movement to life, adding missing frames, but in body animations, not pictures.

This gives you more freedom – you start moving on instinct, finding passages in the defense even before they really open up. And when you cut a pass between the defenders at the same pace as your teammate’s run – the game doesn’t just “allow” you to do it, it seems to help you. The field stops being a static picture and becomes something alive – you play not with what you see, but with what is about to happen.
Yes, the spirit of FIFA 23 is still in the air here. For example, crosses and headers feel almost unchanged, only some spectacular jumps have been added. But in terms of ball handling, passes and the dynamics of shots – FC 24 has certainly entered a new orbit. It is no longer just “another part of the series.” This is a game that feels fresh.

EA Sports FC 24 Gameplay and Animations
Playstyles in FC 24 aren’t just cosmetic. They genuinely change the way matches feel. Animations are smoother and more natural, making moves like the Pinged Pass or Power Shot not only look powerful, they feel powerful. You see the player putting in the effort and you can feel that this skill is helping you gain an advantage. Compare that to someone like Dan James and the difference is clear. Passing has been updated too. Crosses are more weighty, through balls are sharper and the ball feels more realistic overall. But the biggest change is defense. Whereas before you could just stand there and hope that your opponent would run into you, now such attempts end in pain. In FC 24, it’s not just about holding the line, but also about tracking your opponents, using L2 defense and thinking ahead. Sliding tackles are no longer a panacea. The game requires reaction, planning and full engagement.
These mechanics directly affect tactics. For example, 4-2-2-2 has become almost a mandatory scheme – two central defenders cover the central defenders and provide tactical flexibility. But even this is not the main thing. This year, play styles have become so important that now you can give up a player with a higher rating for someone who just has the right special skills. Powerful headers, perfect crosses, sharp short passes – all this creates a real difference. And thanks to the new “Evolutions” system in Ultimate Team, even a seemingly weak card can be pumped up and turned into a real monster. This breaks the usual perception of OVR as the main criterion for the value of a player.

So yes – EA Vancouver really changed something. And this is not just “another seasonal update”. On PC, it finally began to feel like we are not a second-rate platform, to which they throw truncated versions from last-gen consoles. In terms of visuals and functionality, it is now on par with consoles – this is a huge step forward. Of course, not everything is smooth. The game on PC is still not without technical problems. Sometimes matches start to lag for no reason at all. Such freezes rarely happen to me – maybe once or twice for a couple of seconds per match – but they are annoying. Clubs did not launch in early access. The sound sometimes behaved strangely: somewhere it disappeared, somewhere it appeared with a delay. Some players even turned off the commentary or had bugs with the controller.
This is, to put it mildly, annoying. But here it is important to understand: the problem is not that EA is doing nothing. On the contrary – it is clear that they are trying. We finally got a game with ideas. There are fresh mechanics. There is a feeling that this is a step forward. And, although not without rough edges, FC 24 is perhaps the most ambitious FIFA (sorry, EA Sports FC) in recent years.
What’s New in FC 24 Career Mode and Ultimate Team
In FC 24’s manager mode, the focus has shifted to the really interesting details of pre-match preparation. Now you don’t just throw in a lineup and press “play”, but actually work with the players’ form and sharpness – two important parameters that can be pumped up with the help of well-chosen training. And this is not just pumping for the sake of numbers: each coach you hire has their own methods and preferences, and success depends on how much they coincide with your playing philosophy. For example, my team “Juventus” adheres to the Tiki-taka style, so I was looking for specialists in this direction. The result is a noticeable increase in team chemistry and passing game. This system is somewhat reminiscent of a football manager’s quest: to assemble the perfect staff to pull up the attack, midfield and defense to the right “stars”. However, I must admit, this is not always clearly felt on the field – more in the numbers than in real changes in management. It’s a similar story with the shape and sharpness: you only notice them when players start to get tired faster than you expect. But it’s still nice that the career mode finally has new features and tabs, and not just the same mechanics in a new wrapper.

There are even more changes in the player career. The most noticeable is the system of playstyles and leveling up through a skill tree, like in some RPG like Path of Exile. This turns your character into a real professional with a specific specialization:
-
you choose playstyles (for example, “master passer” or “speed dribbler”);
-
unlock new abilities through the development tree;
-
adapt the style to your favorite position and formation;
-
and step by step build a unique player who fits perfectly into your team’s tactics.
And if I managed to get into an online club match, I think this “point” approach would give me a huge advantage. Instead of trying to be both Ronaldo and Van Dijk, growing your ideal midfielder or forward is much more interesting. As for Volta, it also got some attention. This mode has become more like a football version of Fall Guys: mini-games, a focus on freestyle and fun, less seriousness, more freedom. It’s a great relief after FUT. Although, frankly, FUT itself surprisingly does not cause fatigue, as it used to.
In FC 24, everyone who logs in before November 2 receives a bunch of gifts. “Founder’s Packs” allow you to quickly assemble a good gold team – without having to immediately go into donations. Plus, there is a convenient offline mode with squad battles, where you can calmly hone your tactics until you get hit by a nerd who knows every trick in the game.

But perhaps the main change in FUT is the unification of male and female players in the same squads. This is not just a gesture for the sake of inclusivity, it really changes the meta. Female stars like Marta can not only compete with the top players of the male part of the game, but also surpass them in some aspects. This opens up new possibilities when building a squad and forces you to reconsider old habits.
And although not everything is perfect in FC 24: there are still technical rough edges, especially on PC. But it feels like a step forward. The developers made bold decisions: they changed the defense, added cross-gender teams, seriously reworked the animations and controls. And most importantly, you really feel it. This is the case when football in the game begins to feel like something fresh, albeit not revolutionary, but definitely alive.
