When I heard that a game about Don Bradman was coming out, my first thought was: who is making it? I needed to understand whether the studio could handle such an ambitious and technically challenging project.
It turned out that Big Ant Studios was developing it. And here I was a little tense – the studio is known mainly within Australia, and its track record, to put it mildly, did not inspire confidence. A couple of games about Spyro, several rugby simulators and, it seems, a port of Jetpack Joyride. There were zero serious reasons to believe in its success.

And then the project was postponed. And here my expectations began to crumble, and my dreams dissolved in a haze of disappointment.

Why Don Bradman Cricket 14 Remains One of the Best Cricket Games
One of the things that really matters to me in sports games is the presence of licenses and recognizable faces. To be honest, I don’t really enjoy playing when you can’t recognize a single player and the stadiums look like they were thrown together overnight. So when I first learned that Don Bradman Cricket 14 only had two official stadiums and the only licensed player was Don Bradman himself, I was disappointed, to say the least.
But the developers at Red Ant have been incredibly smart. Right at launch, the game prompts you to connect to the internet and download community-created teams from the Cricket Academy. This essentially allows you to fill the game with real legends and current squads in two clicks. And although these are not legally licensed teams, you get players with real names, looks, and even believable characteristics. Smart, don’t you agree?

If there are any tedious moralists among the readers who are ready to complain about the circumvention of licenses – well, don’t stop others from having fun.
As for the game modes, Don Bradman Cricket 14 has a lot to choose from. Here are the main ones:
-
Career – create your own player and go from a 16-year-old rookie to a world-class star in 20 seasons.
-
Tournament – participate in T20 matches or a full round robin championship, fighting for the main trophy.
-
Tour – recreate famous cricket tours of the past.
-
Training grids – hone your skills in free mode.
Personally, my favorite remains the tournament mode. Here you can play a quick match in the T20 format or arrange a full-fledged round robin competition. When you play, you don’t just win – you adapt, learn to read the pitch, cope with different styles of bowlers: from those who spin to those who “cut” the ball. And when you lift the trophy in the final, it feels like you’ve held a real tournament yourself.
There is also a “Tour” mode, in which you can recreate legendary historical matches. For example, yesterday I crushed the Bangladesh team in one game day. But I will say right away – the game is not easy. I will tell you about this separately.
