The developers managed to create an experience that could captivate even those who normally have no interest in racing – dynamic gameplay and visual delights literally caught the eye. This project masterfully conveyed the atmosphere of the competition, turning each race into a real show.

The only real downside was the gameplay, which was poor in content and left players feeling unfinished and dissatisfied. The tracks quickly became repetitive and the choice of modes was very limited. An additional disappointment was the complete absence of trucks, an element that many were expecting. We sincerely wanted a more rich and varied gaming experience. To make matters worse, the developers didn’t even try to release a full-fledged expansion that could fill these gaps. Instead, they rushed to announce the third part, which seemed premature at best.
From the second part to the third
Although the fact that it was announced so soon shouldn’t have been surprising – only two years passed between the first and second parts – a colossal amount of work was done during this period last time. That’s why we were so excited about the quantum leap that DiRT 3 would make. We were hoping for the return of beloved trucks, improved physics to make handling more realistic, and a host of new features that previously seemed almost unachievable. The potential seemed immense, and it was a real shame to see it go unused.

Honestly, the timing of this announcement shouldn’t really be surprising at all. The interval between the first and second games was also two years, yet just look at how far we’ve come since then! We were eagerly anticipating a real breakthrough with DiRT 3. We hoped to see not only the return of trucks but also a more engaging physics model, along with a variety of features we could barely imagine a few years ago.
However, my initial reaction to DiRT 3 was, “Isn’t this just DiRT 2?” The graphics have changed much like a room after a thorough cleaning. Sure, the dust doesn’t obscure the gleam of the polished tables, and everything is nicely arranged, but if you were expecting a complete renovation and ended up with just spotless floors instead, it inevitably dampens the joy of what you’re seeing. The excitement fades a bit when you realize that the core experience feels familiar, making you wish for something truly groundbreaking.
Additionally, the physics now feels much more straightforward, and the controls have become noticeably easier to grasp. The menu now genuinely resembles… a menu. More specifically, it’s quite an unattractive one. The floating cubes lead to deep reflections on the fleeting nature of life and the apparent lack of taste and common sense among the creators. Why?! Why alter something (the food truck menu) that functioned so well for everyone? Why spoil the incredible immersion that made players feel like genuine racers, a quality that everyone celebrated as a highlight? It’s akin to if the new Battlefield decided to remove classes entirely, or if Grand Theft Auto lost its beloved open-world charm, or if Dragon Age featured a dull and uninspired storyline… Wait… Back in 2011, perhaps solar storms were affecting the minds of game developers in ways we can’t even imagine. Who knows, they might even introduce “male romance” in Mass Effect 3. Oh… trollface.jpg.

The tracks are incredibly diverse and varied. There are urban environments, winter wonderlands, arid deserts, vibrant night scenes, lush forests, and peaceful countryside options—something to suit every taste and preference.

After a few races, as you begin to accept that the third game feels very similar to the second, you come to realize it’s not as bad as you first thought (at least until you end up in the main menu). The graphics have been polished quite nicely, especially considering that the engine hasn’t changed at all. The consoles are thoroughly pushed to their limits—they simply can’t deliver anything more. Yet, despite this, we’re presented with such breathtaking landscapes that DiRT 3 could easily be featured in travel brochures. Still doubting whether Finland is as stunning as everyone claims? Just take a scenic drive here, alongside the shimmering lakes and through the towering evergreens. The visual impact is guaranteed! If someone can manage to trademark this captivating approach, please just send me the cash on my Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. That’s all I’m hoping for.

When driving on rough terrain, you can feel every pothole, every unevenness, and the steering wheel vibrates so intensely, as if it wants to break out of your hands. The slightest loss of control – and your car quickly crashes into a tree, which instantly adds tension and adrenaline to the events. In addition, it is worth noting the updated damage model, which gives the races an additional level of authenticity. Although it has almost no effect on the control mechanics, the visual effect of collisions has become much more impressive. Another innovation was the effect of camera shaking when hitting hard objects – it can enhance the emotional perception of the moment, although some players find it overly disorienting. Some users even feel like they are watching the race from the sidelines rather than driving the car themselves. Combined with the overloaded and unintuitive main menu, this raises questions about the overall quality of the design and the level of involvement in the gameplay.
Overall, when discussing the atmosphere, it’s clear that DiRT 3 stands head and shoulders above the second game. The way spectators rush onto the track, only to scramble back in a panic, adds a lively touch. Competitors crashing in dramatic fashion right before your eyes creates an intense realism. The weather effects are nothing short of spectacular, and the nighttime scenes are genuinely breathtaking, enhancing the immersive experience!

Watching the replays is a true delight; it feels like you’re either witnessing an authentic race or experiencing a masterfully directed film. Each detail pulls you in, making every moment captivating and unforgettable.
Gymkhana – how much pain there is in this word
Yet, it’s essential to recognize that Codemasters has indeed introduced several fresh elements; we won’t merely be revisiting a second installment with a new facade. The developers have seamlessly incorporated a “Gymkhana” mode, which has quickly become the signature feature of the latest game. It’s fair to say that DiRT 3 is fundamentally centered around this mode—and, of course, around the iconic Ken Block. He prominently featured in nearly all promotional materials and later took on the role of a coach in this exciting new racing format.

The concept behind “Gymkhana” is straightforward enough, but the execution can be quite daunting for many eager players. You’ll need to tackle a carefully designed course while showcasing an impressive array of car tricks. This involves achieving controlled drifts, skillfully spinning around poles, knocking down carefully placed obstacles, and trying to fly as far as possible in your vehicle. The challenges are meticulously laid out in a precise order, demanding not only creativity but also skillful navigation to conquer them effectively. Mastering these tasks requires practice and finesse, making each successful run all the more rewarding.
For players using keyboards, it’s an absolute nightmare. Honestly, even with a steering wheel, it’s far from easy. I found myself watching countless YouTube videos over and over just to get the hang of most of the tricks—how to properly execute a drift, where exactly to turn the wheel, and at what speed to approach each corner…
To be completely frank, this type of entertainment isn’t for everyone. If it weren’t for the “Gymkhana” events in DiRT 3, I would definitely have an easier time, as this style of competition really isn’t my strong suit. Yet, it’s a strict requirement to complete these events. Can’t nail it? Just keep trying. Still struggling? You’re left with two choices: continue enduring the frustration or throw in the towel and quit the game altogether. If you can’t finish it, you won’t be able to progress in the campaign. That’s just how it works.
There’s definitely a different kind of fun to be had here. You simply drift and rack up points by knocking over cardboard aliens that are attacking cardboard skyscrapers, along with other amusing activities. These modes are designed to serve as a lighthearted distraction from the usual rally experience. However, if they were to reintroduce thrilling truck racing, that would be just as exciting and fun to experience…

Through the mud to the finish line
It is unfair to blame rally racing for the lack of content. Yes, some routes may seem similar, but in fact there are enough tracks to make each race enjoyable. Moreover, players are offered a choice of about 50 different cars, covering several decades of automotive history – from retro classics of the 60s to cult models of the 90s. Each era is represented by bright cars that evoke warm nostalgic emotions. There are also real racing cars, distinguished by their original and memorable design.
There are plenty of opportunities for driving, as well as for exploring locations. If the single-player mode begins to seem monotonous, you can always switch to multiplayer. It offers not only standard races, but also original formats – for example, the very same “Gymkhana”, which brings fresh excitement to the usual gameplay.
The only thing that can be upsetting is the matchmaking system. Sometimes you have to wait a long time in the lobby, which reduces the pace of the game. It may also happen that after a long wait you are thrown into another race mode, perhaps the one you tried to avoid in the campaign. This can be a bit of a disappointment. However, the rally drive does not lose its appeal, and the game always offers something new to explore and try.
And by the way, the “flashbacks” feature remains intact, and they’re just as enjoyable to use as ever. It’s undoubtedly the best innovation for racing games in the entire history of gaming. The only thing that could enhance the experience would be a high-quality steering wheel! Plus, there’s no need to restart the track; any mistake can be elegantly rectified. Just rewind a bit and seamlessly continue the race. Now you can even share replays on YouTube—what a fun and engaging feature that definitely has a bright future ahead.
DiRT 3 is a truly fantastic game, genuinely remarkable in many ways. It’s perfect for those who haven’t yet experienced DiRT 2. Everyone can have a great time with it, and there’s an impressive wealth of variety and content. However, sadly, the third installment doesn’t stray too far from its predecessor and, in some aspects, even falls short of expectations. That’s why we can only assign it a “commendable” rating, reflecting its strengths but also its missed opportunities.
