The randomness here is merciless: sometimes the perfect combo develops on the second floor, and the enemies fall one after another; and sometimes you have to carry a bunch of incongruous artifacts, trying in vain to squeeze at least a shadow of synergy out of them.

The battles take place in a step-by-step format. Each turn begins with a roll of dice — you distribute their values among the objects, activating abilities. For example, the “Battle Axe” deals damage equal to twice the number of points scored, but it will only work when thrown no higher than four. The Magic Rocket, on the other hand, consistently takes away five health units, but requires an even die — an ideal way to add a deuce, although any other even value will do.
The power of an item directly depends on the cube that activates it: the higher the number, the more powerful the effect. But this does not mean that a six is always better than a one — everything is determined by your cards in your hands. Sometimes an extra six only gets in the way if there is no suitable item for it. By the end of the race, when the set of cubes increases from two to five, and artifacts appear among the equipment that can divide, connect, and even clone cubes, the game turns into a real puzzle. Each move requires analysis, calculation, and a little luck – because it decides who will become the dungeon champion today.

How Dicey Dungeons Combines RPG and Rogue-Lite Mechanics
Despite the fact that Dicey Dungeons has absorbed all the recognizable features of the rogue-lite genre, Terry Kavanaugh himself refers his creation more to an RPG. According to him, it is the choice of class that determines the style and outcome of the race much more than the items found along the way. One can argue with this statement: it seems that both components — class and loot — are equally important for success in dungeons.
Nevertheless, one thing cannot be denied — the characters here are brilliantly worked out. Each of them has unique mechanics, its own set of items, a unique fighting style and a personal motivation to descend into the next abyss. Even the way they roll the dice is different! It would seem that this action could be simpler, but it also turns into a recognizable feature of the hero.

There are six characters in the game, and each has six episodes in which the rules and conditions of passage change slightly. To open the final, 37th chapter, you need to complete five episodes for each character. In other words, you will have to overcome at least 31 dungeons to complete the game. One race takes about half an hour, but luck is a capricious companion, and even the most experienced players cannot do without it. As a result, the passage of Dicey Dungeons can last for 50 hours or more, turning into a real test of skill, patience and luck.
Item System and Balance Issues in Dicey Dungeons
If the variety of characters in the game is really impressive, then the items are much sadder. There are catastrophically few of them — and this, in my opinion, is the reason for almost all the game problems. The developers promise that new DLCs will appear in the future, but for now we have to be content with what we have. And this “what is” is barely enough even for a dozen hours — after ten, I felt that I had already seen everything that the game has to offer.
I especially remember the subject called “Ice Age”. When activated with two units, it turns all the opponent’s dice on the next turn… also into units. It’s a funny paradox: not throwing away a single unit is great, one is bad, and two are just fine. Unfortunately, there are almost no such original mechanics. Moreover, this item cannot be bought or found — it is available only from the Yeti, and only a Thief can steal the ability for himself. The rest of the characters are left with boring options like “Restore as much health as indicated on the die” or “Add +1 to the value of the die.”
With enemies, however, everything is much better. They are diverse, charismatic, and even have their own mini-biographies. No opponent repeats within the same race, each has unique abilities, and sometimes completely new mechanics. And although their intelligence, to put it mildly, does not shine, it is still pleasant to watch these cute and eccentric creatures.

But even with such a variety of opponents, the game feels monotonous — the strategy hardly changes. Tactics come down to the same thing: hope for an unsuccessful enemy throw and respond with your proven combination. I acted the same way with each new battle, rarely changing my equipment. It was impossible to find a really effective alternative build: after improving several items, you lose the point of experimenting, because replacing them will weaken your current combo. As a result, the game unwittingly pushes you into a vicious circle: one hero, one bundle, one tactic.
However, this problem does not affect all characters — and it is precisely in this contrast that the charm of the game lies. The characters are thought out to the smallest detail, everyone has their own style and gameplay philosophy. But the system of objects looks pale and incomplete against their background, as if it simply did not have time to be perfected.
At the same time, the game seems to expect you to adapt to each enemy. She suggests the weaknesses of her opponents, but these tips are often meaningless. It doesn’t make much sense to find out that the “Paper Knight is vulnerable to fire” if your build is on ice or poison, because no one will break an already established strategy for such a nuance. As a result, even clever hints turn into a source of irritation, and the game, instead of encouraging flexibility, imperceptibly drives you into the framework of a single, albeit reliable, tactic.
This is how the main paradox is born: under the magnificent shell, where every little thing screams attention to detail, there is a system that does not allow you to fully enjoy the depth of mechanics. And if heroes are the soul of this game, then objects, alas, are still its weakest link.
Final Verdict: Why Dicey Dungeons Is Still Worth Playing in 2025
Despite the fact that Dicey Dungeons sometimes lacks a variety of items, it’s easy to fix — because the game has a huge potential for growth. Development continues, and there is every reason to hope that the project will follow the path of The Binding of Isaac, regularly receiving updates and new additions. In similar games, be it Hearthstone or other card roguelike games, the most fascinating mechanics did not appear immediately. I would like to believe that Dicey Dungeons will have the same evolution.
Today, the game already has everything you need to turn into a real hit: original gameplay ideas, a pleasant visual style and a fascinating musical accompaniment. Even now, without dozens of DLCs, it can captivate for hours. However, Terry Kavanaugh, the author of such hits as Super Hexagon and VVVVVV, was not expected to do anything else — his talent is still recognizable in every detail.

There remains only one question: why, for all its simplicity and minimalism of the interface, Dicey Dungeons still has not reached mobile platforms and the Nintendo Switch? The developers honestly admit: “We really want this, but it probably won’t happen before 2020.” Therefore, if you like short gaming sessions, it may be worth waiting for the release on portable devices — Dicey Dungeons will perfectly fit into the format of short trips or waits.
