Players have long had a weakness for virtual robberies and chaos — and Crime Boss: Rockay City seems to have been created for those who want to try on the mask of a daring robber. This adventure combines elements of a crime thriller, the freedom of the sandbox and the tension of roguelike, immersing in the atmosphere of a neon city inspired by the spirit of Miami and Hollywood stories about gangsters.
But the idyll ends at the moment when an influential criminal boss suddenly blows up right in his own penthouse. The mayor, his entourage, and half of the city’s elite disappear with him. Rockay City remains without control, and this instantly triggers a new round of power struggle — showdowns break out on the streets, gangs disrupt old agreements, and criminal groups seek to gain a foothold in foreign territories.
In this mess, we play the role of Travis Baker, a charismatic leader who looks like he came straight out of a modern western. This “cowboy of the metropolis” always appears in a branded hat, holds himself confidently and prefers to solve problems based on a stern character and an impressive revolver. It is not necessary to understand weapons: according to the precepts of Boris Razva, the main thing is that they should be impressive. Baker’s is just like that — heavy, brutal and perfect for criminal fights in a world where every step can be the last.

You will have to manage your own criminal empire from the central hub, a kind of headquarters that slightly resembles Mass Effect in structure, but without romantic lines. It’s a pity: your assistant is a spectacular woman with an appearance in the style of a young Kim Basinger, and in the story environment of Crime Boss she would look as good as possible. But Google carefully: modern times are not very favorable to former stars.
Once in the hub, the player is faced with a simple but enjoyable planning mechanic. This is not a strategy in the classical sense: the system suggests deciding whether to act with brute force or to prefer a more targeted approach. Regardless of the tactics chosen, Crime Boss remains a roguelike character, which means that the first forays for power in the criminal city are guaranteed to end in failure. However, it is death that starts the progression: after each failure, the hero receives permanent bonuses that make subsequent races easier and more dynamic. Even if coordination is not your strong suit, the game gives you a chance to get to the top of the criminal hierarchy.
The hub also acts as a financial center where you can properly distribute the money you earn. Here you hire fighters, buy weapons and form your own gang. The “army” consists of unnamed recruits — the very sixes who will heroically fall on the battlefield for the sake of your criminal greatness.

But the key characters are on a completely different level. They go on robberies, have unique skills, character and style of play. For example, boss Troy Baker himself brings a substantial loot bonus, but if he dies, the campaign ends instantly. Jupiter, a massive female bodybuilder, easily carries heavy prey; Ranger, Vamp, and Raven are ideal for covert operations, with an emphasis on stealth and precision.
The arsenal of weapons deserves special attention. Dozens of barrels — from a compact butterfly knife to a powerful sawn-off shotgun — allow you to experiment with gameplay and select a set for a specific task. Many recruits come to the team with mediocre weapons, so a reasonable investment in firepower significantly increases the chances of success.

Crime Boss: Rockay City Plot
Having dealt with the backstory and minor mechanics, it’s time to move on to the heart of Crime Boss: Rockay City, the shooter part. The developers tried their best here: there is no realism of weapon recoil, and not all barrels feel unique, but the shooting process turned out to be vigorous and truly driving. This approach fits perfectly with the “run and shoot” dynamics, and the variety of missions constantly throws up fresh situations for shootouts and aggressive gameplay.
Protection of the territory
The first type of task offers you to try on the role of a Touchdown master of guns and chaos, who seems to have been created for fire suppression. His signature machine gun and trademark swearing help fight off waves of enemy bandits. The gameplay resembles a shooting gallery: just hold your position and pour fire on your enemies. Unfortunately, there is not much depth in this mode, and it quickly deteriorates with frequent repetition. But there is a tricky way around the game — if you capture the enemy area in advance, from where the attack is coming from, the mission is canceled. It took me a while to figure it out, but when I finally figured it out, I cheered louder than I should have.
This mode is similar to the previous one, but already noticeably more lively. Here it is necessary not only to clean up the area, but also to eliminate the mini-boss — the local “Captain”. The name clearly refers to mafia structures and their hierarchy. You will have to control an unnamed six with random weapons. Sometimes the game gives out a bat, which is “great” for a shootout, but the battlefield is strewn with the weapons of fallen fighters, so you can quickly arm yourself more seriously or heroically die by crushing the skulls of enemies. After death, a new six is placed under control, and the cycle continues.
Robberies
The brightest, most profitable and atmospheric part of the game. You form a squad of four fighters and go to work. There are about a dozen missions: bank safes, warehouses, jewelry shops, drug trafficking — each with its own layout and nuances. The essence remains the same: find valuables, take them to the transport and survive a shootout with security or rivals. It is these tasks that create the feeling of a real crime drama: intense loot, adrenaline—fueled escapes, team coordination – everything works to create an atmosphere of robberies.
The stealth system is simple but surprisingly effective. And although the game openly provokes noisy shootouts, a stealthy approach provides a number of tangible advantages. Firstly, a robbery can be pulled off with just one character — this saves time in the game day and allows you to have more time. Secondly, quiet actions almost do not annoy the police, which means that the special forces will not arrive ahead of time.

The aggressiveness of the police
One of the important gameplay elements is the scale of police activity. The more naughty you are, the stronger the response. At a high level, the police send heavy squads, and the missions turn into survival. Therefore, experienced players carry out robberies at the beginning of the day, while the scale is low, and quick territorial skirmishes later, because the police still do not have time to intervene.
Big robberies
These are story chains of tasks that allow you to pull off a big deal or remove a competitor from the race for power. The format of the missions is varied — stealth, open firefights, bribes, negotiations. There are about five such chains, and each one brings a fresh dynamic and a sense of a full-fledged criminal adventure to the passage.
Your assistant Nasara brings specialists to the gang from time to time, but in order for them to reach their potential and get unique weapons, you will have to complete a series of quests. I almost always had a Ranger who was a great fighter, but with a terrible personal campaign: dreary dialogues that couldn’t be missed, and stuffy Vietnamese jungles where literally nothing was visible. I endured it for the sake of leveling up, and every time I regretted it.
Weakening enemy gangs
If the war for the districts is going hard or you want to speed up your progress, you can send key characters to help the sixers. The tasks here are straightforward: blow up the facility, eliminate the target, and quickly escape before the police arrive. These missions are a bit boring, but they are extremely important strategically. They allow you to weaken the enemy’s defenses, capture an area without a combat mission, or make it neutral in order to occupy it later without losses. This is especially valuable in the final sectors, where the number of defenders is noticeably reduced.
