Contraband Police is a project by the Polish studio Crazy Rocks, which has been working in the gaming industry since 2016. The team’s debut was Street Warriors Online, a multiplayer fighting game with a third-person view, a class system, leveling up, and several modes. The game received mixed reviews on Steam: only 57% of about 1,600 players rated it positively. The peak online was 1,436 people.
But the studio’s second project turned out to be a real breakthrough. Contraband Police, which was released on March 8, 2023, collected more than 94% positive reviews on Steam and interested over 8,100 players at the same time at its peak. Up to 100 thousand viewers watched the game on Twitch, which was a serious success for a small developer.

Contraband Police is not just a border work simulator, but a full-fledged adventure with plot twists and even action scenes. The action takes place in 1981 in a fictional country called the People’s Republic of Akaristan – a state with a communist regime, in which the features of the Soviet Union are easily recognizable. The player will try on the role of a young graduate of the officer academy, sent to serve at a border outpost in the harsh mountain region of Karikatka.
On the eve of our arrival, a scandal broke out here: the former chief Roznikov was caught in connections with smugglers. Now the management – in the person of Commissar Andreev – places great hopes on the new officer, that is, on us.

The locals speak a fictional language in which it is easy to catch intonations reminiscent of Polish. The area is restless: criminal groups such as the Oberankov gang and the radical organization “Bloody Fist” are active, dreaming of overthrowing the government. Depending on our decisions, we can support the ruling regime or join the revolutionaries.
The game world is revealed through newspaper articles, dialogues with drivers, story missions – all this helps to feel the atmosphere. By the way, there are interesting Easter eggs: for example, the fictional Novid-78 epidemic clearly refers to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the spirit of Papers, Please, the game touches on the themes of totalitarianism, censorship and surveillance – so you will definitely not be bored.

Contraband Police Gameplay
In Contraband Police, the whole point of the gameplay revolves around carefully checking documents and identifying violators. At first, everything is quite simple – we check the passport and entry permit, look closely at the date, name, photo, document number. But the further you go, the more responsibility: you need to inspect the cargo, check it against the inventory, check the technical condition of the car, and also study how authentic the stamps and forms are. The system gradually becomes more complex – and this is not just mechanics, but a reflection of events happening in the world.
The situation in Akaristan and beyond is constantly changing. For example, an outbreak of disease – and now you can’t get through without a vaccination certificate. A military conflict at the borders? You will have to determine who really needs asylum and who forged documents. A new law is introduced – say, a ban on entry for people of certain professions – and again you need to be on your guard. Even the slightest mistake in the papers can cause a refusal, because the rules here are strict. But sometimes you come across a person with a story — and it is up to you to decide whether to be a strict law enforcement officer or show humanity. Interestingly, you can later receive a letter from this person — and find out how your decision changed their fate. It would seem like a small thing, but such moments give the game a special depth.

As for the fight against smuggling — here you will have to work as a detective. Clues can be found in the notes attached directly to the stand. We look at the car under a UV lamp: if we see a snake symbol, it is time to open the cache. Depending on the hiding place, we use the right tool: a knife, an axe or a crowbar. Contraband is hidden in tires, bags, under the hood, in the seats — even in the glove compartment.
But the game is not limited to bureaucracy. Sometimes drivers react violently: someone starts to quarrel, someone offers a bribe, and some run away. And now you’re racing after the violator in a patrol car, trying to drive him into a ditch. If that doesn’t help, all that’s left is to shoot. Just like in a real action movie.
Contraband Police Game Mechanics: Weapons, Quests, and Patrol Duties
In Contraband Police, you don’t just sit at the border post, checking papers. The work here is much more intense. Found contraband must be taken to the station, arrested people must be escorted to a labor camp. And you can also buy things from a local merchant named Vlad: tools, weapons, equipment – everything will come in handy. But traveling on the road does not always go smoothly: you can get into an ambush. In such cases, either step on the gas or get out and fight back.
Over time, the game gives access to convenient functions – you can call Vlad directly to the post for 200 Acaristan dollars and not run around again. Or drive a special car for 500, where you can immediately take both contraband and prisoners, without wasting time. Transport control is simple, there is a first and third person view. The cars here can be properly “dented”: windows, doors fly out, the body suffers – the physics are implemented, although not ideally, but at a level.
Money is spent not only on purchases – part of the budget is steadily spent on maintaining the infrastructure: repair of buildings, salaries, improvements. The house can be equipped better – this raises the level of perception, which simplifies the verification of documents, and increases health. The warehouse and prison can also be pumped up – more people and things will fit. Upgrading the security improves their survivability and allows you to issue new weapons. At first, you will have at your disposal the Azar-V – a classic “loaf”, but later you can get a VAZ “Zhiguli” or a powerful truck Grazduk (“Shishiga”).

You will definitely not be bored – you will periodically be given quests. Additional tasks are interventions, such as a chase, protection of the department or search for contraband. The main quests please with variety: somewhere you will be asked to follow someone, including elements of stealth, and somewhere you will need to conduct an investigation, talk to suspects and make fateful decisions. There are also action-packed missions, such as Call of Duty-style car chases or just large-scale shootouts with a crowd of enemies. At the end of each story mission, you make a choice: support the government or the Bloody Fist. The game immediately shows what this will lead to.
In addition to quests, there are also surprise attacks on the outpost – about once per chapter. Enemies storm the base, and you and the guards fight back. The waves are getting longer, there are more enemies, sometimes reinforcements arrive. But you shouldn’t expect well-thought-out tactics – bypasses, tricks – from them. The militants are pushing straight ahead.
There is enough shooting in the game. In terms of importance, it is second only to documents. But the combat is simple: the weapon feels light, the animations are angular – reminiscent of old shooters like Call of Duty from the early 2000s. Your arsenal includes:
-
Makarov pistol – a standard weapon at the start;
-
KS-23 — a shotgun with good power at close range;
-
M56 — a submachine gun, convenient in close combat;
-
Kalashnikov assault rifle — opens later, versatile in battles;
-
Mosin rifle — suitable for long-range combat;
-
hand grenade — for clearing dense groups of enemies.
Surprisingly, there is no weapon modification system: you cannot install a sight, silencer or grip. The health bar of enemies appears directly during shooting, while the player’s indicator is bloody spots along the edges of the screen. At the same time, health is restored automatically if you do not take damage. Headshots are deadly with any weapon, so there is no serious difference between the guns – except for the convenience of shooting.

Of the bugs, it is worth mentioning that the sniper does not react to attacks on the post, but this will most likely be fixed with a patch. Visually, the game is simple. There are few animations, they are sometimes crude, the environment is minimalistic. But overall, the picture is perceived well. The only downside is optimization: despite the modest graphics, the game can noticeably slow down.
