Sometimes, to make something truly fresh, it’s enough to just… look back. While the industry churns out “realistic” tactical shooters with area-sized maps and a bunch of dull routine like sitting in ambush and saving “quick save” after each step, several independent developers went the other way. Without looking back at fashionable trends, without the race for super-realism, they simply made a game — like in the good old days: lively, energetic, with notes of carefree arcade, which, it would seem, was buried long ago. And suddenly — as if out of nowhere — this old, almost forgotten magic came back to life.

At first glance, it seems that we have a typical tactical shooter before us: the action takes place in the most “combat” environment possible – Iraq, Kuwait, Operation Desert Storm, guilty Saddam and a team of seasoned special forces, determined to set priorities with the help of machine guns. The weapons are realistic, squad management is present, everything seems to be as it should be. But if you dig a little deeper – it becomes clear: Desert Storm does not have much in common with such titans of the genre as Ghost Recon or SWAT.
The squad command system, for example, is simplified to the limit – but in moderation. It is easy to control partners: you can tell them, like, shoot at everything that moves, or, on the contrary, sit quietly and do not show yourself. Sometimes you even have to stay alone, temporarily sending the fighters away – sometimes their “help” hinders rather than helps. Nevertheless, these options are enough to resolve most game situations, especially considering how convenient the interface is. The controls are a pleasure, and everything is at hand.

What’s nice is that your teammates try to behave adequately: they don’t get in your way, don’t get stuck in the terrain, and are happy to shoot everything that comes out of the wrong direction. Although sometimes, upon seeing an enemy, they have fits of wild excitement – and they fire furiously at the target… not really paying attention to the fact that you are standing between them and the enemy. The result is unpredictable, but most often painful.

Is Conflict: Desert Storm worth playing?
The game is unlikely to cause a storm of negativity – for one simple reason: our special forces turned out to be surprisingly tenacious. Even if the hero gets hit by a tank shell or suddenly blows up by a mine, no drama will happen. He will simply fall to the ground, start writhing and waving his arms, calling for help from his comrades. And they, like real brothers in arms, will not let you down – a first aid kit, a couple of seconds of healing animation, and here the fighter is back in action. A minute later, he is already cheerfully running into the attack, as if he had not been a hair’s breadth from death.
What is especially pleasing is that the supply of medicines and ammunition here is practically inexhaustible. Enemy soldiers literally shower us with useful supplies: first aid kits, ammunition, even grenades – everything is in abundance, you just have to bend down and pick it up. With such supplies, missions turn into a relaxed walk along the dunes with a machine gun at the ready. Destroy an anti-aircraft gun? Blow up a bridge? Save hostages? You’re welcome — everything is done without much effort or nerves.

Here’s what you’ll most often have to do during missions:
-
Capture or destroy key objects (bridges, launchers, enemy bases);
-
Free prisoners under enemy sniper fire;
-
Repel enemy attacks and cover your teammates;
-
Collect ammunition, first aid kits, and other trophies from the battlefield.
Sometimes the command is generous and trusts us to operate military equipment — be it an armored car or a tank. But the joy of such an upgrade doesn’t last long. The vehicles here are like cardboard: just one hit, and there are sparks, smoke, and then complete collapse. Fortunately, this doesn’t interfere with the task — you can run to the target on foot, no one forces you to sit in a burning tin can until the last minute. Much more unpleasant are the missions to rescue prisoners. This is where the real test begins: enemy snipers are not asleep and know exactly who to shoot first. Situations sometimes become tense, and you have to turn on at least some tactics.
Overall, we have a pretty nice, visually pleasing (just look at the screenshots) and frankly arcade tactical shooter. It does not require any special concentration, planning or serious preparation from the player. Quite the opposite – the game is perfect for those who just want to relax after a hard day, shoot at the screen without much responsibility and enjoy the simple, understandable gameplay. Highly recommended for all fans of easy, relaxed action games.
