In early 2017, Conan Exiles appeared on Steam in the Early Access format and immediately attracted the attention of genre fans. However, the project still had a long way to go before its full release – almost a year and a half of continuous development. All this time, the Funcom studio painstakingly improved its harsh survival simulator, transferring players to the merciless lands of exiles. Initially, the game suffered from many bugs, which most Early Access participants complained about, but by the release, the developers managed to bring it to a state that can be proud of.

It is worth mentioning that Conan Exiles is far from the first visit of the Norwegian studio to the dark world of Hyboria. Even before that, Funcom gave fans of the MMO universe Age of Conan, where players could also plunge into the atmosphere of the cruel and dangerous world of Conan the Barbarian.

The plot starts without unnecessary intricacies. Our hero is a resident of Hyboria, sentenced to death and crucified in the middle of a merciless desert. He was left to die slowly under the scorching sun, but the execution did not last long: suddenly Conan himself appears on the horizon and frees the unfortunate man. And, apparently, this is the only reason why the legendary barbarian is present in the game at all – after this scene, he disappears without a trace. Before enjoying the miracle of salvation, the player will have to create his own character: choose gender, race, appearance and even religion.

Religion in Conan Exiles is not just a formality, but a full-fledged game mechanic. Each deity opens access to unique recipes, and ritual sacrifices allow you to summon giant avatars capable of sweeping away everything in their path. At the beginning, you can serve only one god, but later the list of cults expands. At the same time, the game does not care much about canonicity – in Hyboria, an adept of Seth may suddenly appear, simultaneously singing the praises of the solar Mithra, although in reality their teachings are incompatible.

And, of course, we cannot fail to mention the “legendary” character editor, which only the lazy have not talked about. Here you can customize everything, right down to the size of the hero’s intimate body parts. Whether this is done for the sake of artistic intent or solely to attract attention is a rhetorical question.

Survival and Building in Conan Exiles

Once you create your hero, the world of Conan Exiles opens up to you without any loading screens or artificial boundaries. No one will lead you by the hand here — there is no proper training, you will have to learn everything on your own, by trial and error. Don’t expect classic quests either, but small tasks will appear in the corner of the screen that will unobtrusively guide you and introduce you to key mechanics.

At first (and, to be honest, even after tens of hours), you will have to spend most of your time mining for materials. At first, these are ordinary branches and stones, and later — much rarer and more valuable resources, like star metal or demon blood. To find them, you will have to plow through the truly impressive landscapes of Hyboria: hot deserts, wild jungles, frosty mountain valleys, boggy swamps and even the dangerous slopes of a volcano. But the romance of travel quickly gives way to routine – instead of just enjoying the views, you will chop down trees, break rocks and hunt animals.

The choice of tool directly affects the result: hit a tree with an axe – get wood, and if you use a pickaxe – get bark. At the same time, the hero needs food and water, otherwise he will simply die of hunger or thirst. Hunting gives meat, and for long-term survival it is better to get your own home. You can build anything, for example:

• a modest hut by the river;
• a spacious house with a workshop;
• a massive fortress with towers and gates.

In some ways, Conan Exiles resembles a harsh version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Here, too, you can climb rocks, cook food in a pot and explore the world at your own pace. Only the atmosphere is much darker and harsher, and the explicit scenes and brutality replace the Zelda fairy tale.

Unique Mechanics and Game Modes of Conan Exiles

At first, I was genuinely puzzled as to why this harsh survival simulator was even brought to the world of Conan. It seemed that all that was left from the Hyborian era was a big name, a couple of races, and gods for show. There didn’t even seem to be any “lore” — especially compared to Age of Conan, where every location was filled with quotes from books. But the more I wandered through the wastelands, the clearer it became: there is history here, it’s just hidden. You need to carefully explore the world, collect scraps of notes, find hidden records — and then you begin to understand that this isn’t just a survival game, but a part of the universe that Hyborian fans will easily fall in love with.

The slavery mechanic stands apart — a thing that, frankly, is unusual and not for everyone. To get yourself an “assistant,” you’ll have to knock out an enemy, tie him up, and make him spin the famous wheel of pain — the same thing that fans of the old Conan movie remember. Slavery here is not just a harsh decoration, but an important part of the economy. Warriors protect the house, blacksmiths forge weapons better than any found, and dancers remove the filth that can be picked up by poking your nose into ancient ruins.

You can play in different modes: PvP (where everyone seems to have been personally saved from the cross by Conan), PvE or alone. Solo is not easy: the world is harsh, and death comes quickly. Up to 40 people can fit on a server, and although the game’s full potential is revealed in multiplayer, even the single-player campaign can drag you on.

After death, experience and skills remain with you, but everything you have acquired is only what is stored in chests. Unless, of course, you have chosen an easy level in single player, where life is a little easier. In online, however, one annoying moment is that changing the server means starting from scratch and creating a new character.

Since the release, Conan Exiles has noticeably changed. There are more resources, more recipes, more monsters, animations have become more lively, new gods and even entire biomes have appeared – a volcano and a swamp. It is obvious that the developers worked with love and persistence, and now the game feels much richer and deeper than in the first months.

Conan Exiles Pros and Cons: Is It Worth Playing?

To be honest, I never considered myself a fan of survival games, but Conan Exiles managed to win me over from the first hours. Here, everyone will find something to do: you can go explore gloomy ancient ruins or team up with other players and build a real city. The atmosphere of the Hyborian world is conveyed surprisingly accurately – from the harsh beauty of the landscapes to the dark rituals with sacrifices.

It is especially nice that the developers did not delay the full release. In just 15 months, Conan Exiles came out of Early Access in decent shape, while some projects get stuck there for many years (DayZ, this is about you). Yes, there are still bugs, but they rather spoil the picture than interfere with the game.
