This is a direct sequel to the 2019 shooter, which, let us recall, was a fresh reimagining of the iconic Modern Warfare from 2007. In the updated version, fans will again meet familiar heroes, and the central theme remains the same – the realities of modern warfare. True, the plot this time is completely different: new conflicts, twists and missions. Other aspects of the game have also been reworked – from upgrading weapons to multiplayer, so even experienced players will have something to learn.

Modern Warfare 2 barely continues the plot of the previous part – the main connection between them is only in the characters. So, even if you are launching a game from this series for the first time, there is nothing to worry about: everything key will be told as the action progresses, and you will not miss anything.

The story begins with the operation of Squad 141 under the command of General Shepard. During the mission, an Iranian general named Ghorbrani is eliminated with a missile strike – a transparent reference to the real events of January 2020, when Qasem Soleimani was eliminated.

After this, a new antagonist appears on the scene – Hassan Zayani, an ally of Ghorbrani. He takes power into his own hands, begins to finance terrorists and somehow gains access to three American ballistic missiles. The main task of the heroes is to find out how the missiles came into his possession and stop the impending threat.

As for the gameplay, everything is in the spirit of the Call of Duty series. We move from one point to another, eliminating opponents, completing stealth missions, participating in chases and controlling equipment. The action does not let you get bored for a minute.

We play as elite special forces fighters, so we have at our disposal not only classic weapons and grenades, but also more advanced gadgets – for example, heartbeat sensors or gas grenades. All this adds dynamics and tactical depth to the gameplay.

Action, stealth and nostalgia: what Modern Warfare 2’s campaign is made of

Story campaigns in Call of Duty have long been something of a prologue to multiplayer: they teach the basics, introduce mechanics, and at the same time entertain, as if it were a movie for a couple of evenings. With obligatory saving of the world, spectacular scenes and heroes who always know what to do.

Modern Warfare 2 continues this tradition. The story here is simple to the point of impossibility, but it works – because proven techniques are back in action. A team of special forces rushes to different corners of the planet, organizes night raids on bases, storms a Mexican cartel and, in the classic genre, pulls survivors out of a crashed helicopter. The campaign offers familiar scenarios:

• covert raids under cover of night,
• storming fortified bases,
• stalking and stalking on the streets,
• cinematic shootouts and escapes,
• intense interrogations and special operations in the spirit of CIA films.

But there is one “but”: this time the developers decided to tone down the madness a little. Instead of total chaos and endless epicness – a little more realism. Of course, realism in the understanding of Call of Duty: no one has canceled the shootouts and tense moments, it’s just that now the heroes do not fly on a cable attached to a bank safe, and do not fight against the background of falling satellites.

Although a couple of crazy scenes still remain. In one of them, the main character, dangling upside down, shoots at enemies, trying not to get under the wheels of rushing cars – now this is truly a franchise classic. Otherwise, the gameplay has become a little quieter between bright action scenes. More stealth, more tension, more tactics. The authors did not forget about cinematic references – in the frame you can easily recognize “Black Hawk Down”, “13 Hours” and both parts of “Assassin”. It is obvious that they were inspired.

They didn’t forget about the fans of the series either: MW2 has plenty of subtle references to old games. For example, Captain Price was once surprised by the nickname “Soap”, and now one of the antagonists asks a similar question, only with much less politeness.

Character depth instead of outrageousness: the new MW2

Sometimes too carried away by making the game “according to the canons” of a classic action movie. Of course, the lack of unnecessary pathos is a plus, but a simple, predictable plot can spoil the impression. From the very first minutes it becomes clear who the main villain is and how it will all end. It’s funny that the characters themselves are not yet in the know, but the player has already understood everything. This is especially striking against the background of the original Modern Warfare 2. There, on the contrary, they tried to shock – what is the infamous mission “Not a word in Russian” or the sudden betrayal of the command worth. These moments were truly surprising and etched in the memory. But in the new part, you won’t see such twists. Therefore, those who buy Call of Duty solely. As for the characters, they have never been particularly distinguished by the depth of character. Even the most recognizable ones like Captain Price, Soap or Ghost are remembered primarily for their images: a cigar, a mohawk, a mask with a skull – that’s the whole set.

We were told a little more about Price’s past, and in the sequel they went further: now the heroes not only appear in missions, but also reveal themselves as individuals. We learn what kind of people they are, how they communicate with each other and what they feel in difficult situations. The characters often work in pairs: Price and Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, Ghost and Soap. They were joined by newcomers – Mexican special forces soldiers Alejandro Vargas and Rudolfo Parra.

During missions, the heroes actively communicate. Sometimes you even get a choice — you can respond to a line, and even if it doesn’t affect the plot in any way, it allows you to better feel the atmosphere and get closer to the characters. In one of the memorable missions, the wounded Soap hides in a Mexican town without a weapon, and Ghost stays in touch with him. He not only gives advice, but also jokes, tells stories from life. You can even answer him with your own joke. Ghost has generally become a real star of the new part. Previously, he was popular solely because of his mask, but now we have a chance to get to know him better — and, what’s nice, listen to his signature British accent.

The other characters also come to life. For example, Soap can’t stand jokes about animals, and in stressful situations he breaks into Scottish. Captain Price is still formidable, loves to drive subordinates and considers himself the best sniper in the world. But we learn about the Mexicans mostly from cut scenes – which is logical, you need to get used to the new characters. I really want to believe that they will appear again – perhaps in the next part or in the planned story DLC. After MW2, a full-fledged Call of Duty about the war with the cartels just begs to be made.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Gameplay in Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty developers like to dilute standard shootouts with unusual types of gameplay – so that players can at least catch their breath a little. Modern Warfare 2 is no exception, but, alas, such inserts do not always work successfully.

For example, military aircraft and cover a squad from the air carrying out an operation on the ground. It sounds impressive, but in reality everything is not so simple: the action does not take place on the battlefield, but in a peaceful city where a Mexican cartel operates. It is immediately stipulated that you cannot shoot at buildings and civilians. The problem is that the height is high, enemies are visible only through a thermal imager, and it is almost impossible to determine who in the crowd is holding a weapon. A hit on a building – and the mission is failed. Instead of variety and respite – irritation and a desire to end it as soon as possible.

Another controversial episode is the pursuit of an enemy motorcade. You can jump on the roofs of cars, climb from one to another, look out of the window and shoot. But all this works intermittently. You often miss, fall on the asphalt and die, because the controls fail. And the mission itself is also drawn out, and the physics of the cars is not the most responsive.

There are several annoying moments in these episodes:

• awkward or unstable controls;
• high probability of accidental failure due to minor errors;
• lengthy scenes that lose momentum;
• non-intuitive limitations that hinder engagement.

But it’s not all bad. There are some really cool moments in the game. For example, when you play as Soap and help Ghost get through a guarded prison. You control the video surveillance system, track patrols and give instructions – where to go, when to stop, who to eliminate quietly. You feel like a real coordinator of the operation.

And in another mission, the same Soap is wounded, unarmed and alone in a city captured by enemies. Survival comes to the fore: you collect resources, craft smoke grenades and lockpicks, try to avoid unnecessary noise and move stealthily. These missions are good because everything depends on the player. If you lose, there is no one to blame but yourself. The game design here is really top notch.

Pros and Cons of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 is a solid action game that is enjoyable to play. The campaign is solid, with well-staged scenes and colorful characters that you really get attached to. It is especially pleasing that the characters were revealed more deeply than before – we learned something new about them. But if you are expecting unexpected twists or a deep, dramatic plot – alas, this is not here. Instead, the game offers a calmer and more even rhythm than the previous parts.

This may be a disappointment for those who take Call of Duty exclusively for the single-player mode. However, if you are going to look into the multiplayer, then the single is definitely worth attention. It gives you the opportunity to try out new features, test weapons and equipment, and at the same time enjoy gorgeous sound design and juicy animations. Nevertheless, if you are only interested in the story part, it may be worth waiting for discounts or looking for a cheaper copy. It is not a fact that the campaign is worth its $ 70.

Developers from Infinity Ward promised that Modern Warfare 2 would open a new era for the series. But judging by the single-player mode, this did not happen. This does not mean that it is bad, it is just that the ambitions of the authors were too loud.

What let me down:

• The plot is quite predictable
• Some missions are irritating in their implementation
