Even before its release, the new part of Call of Duty managed to make a lot of noise. The developers promised that Modern Warfare would reveal the theme of war from an unexpected side – they say, there will be no unambiguous heroes, no unconditional villains. However, commercials and trailers said something completely different. So where is the truth? What did Infinity Ward end up with – we tell you in our review.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare once changed the way we think about military shooters. It wasn’t just a shooter — it showed war without embellishment. We still remember that terrifying scene with a nuclear explosion, where the player literally lived through the last minutes of a soldier’s life. And even though the antagonist Zakhaev was, to put it mildly, primitive, the story was gripping — without excessive propaganda, but with the right dose of drama.
When Infinity Ward announced that they were going to rethink their classics, I wanted to believe that they would really try to show war as it is — with moral ambiguity, difficult decisions, and without dividing into “good” and “bad”. They succeeded in some ways. In the new Modern Warfare, the heroes commit terrible acts, sometimes for the sake of higher goals, and realize that they are also murderers. Even one of the antagonists evokes sympathy. But, as usual, there was a fly in the ointment.

The plot unfolds in the fictional country of Kastovia, in the city of Verdansk. A team of US special forces and a CIA agent, for whom we play, must intercept chemical weapons belonging to the Russian General Barkov. Moreover, the operation begins not with a secret sortie, but with a large-scale bombing – right on the warehouse with this very gas. As they say, “it won’t work quietly.” Logic? It doesn’t matter. The main thing is spectacular. And here Modern Warfare is true to itself: spectacularity is more important than common sense. The game itself tries to be more serious and “realistic” than the 2007 version. Self-irony is gone, there are stern faces, a dirty war and talk about morality in a world where it has long been ground into dust. True, there is a nuance: the Russians were made “bad” again.
According to the plot, the fictional Urzykstan is occupied by the allegedly Russian army, commanded by General Barkov. Formally, he fights terrorism, but the methods are simply outrageous: mass executions, gas attacks, show executions. All this does not look like a meaningful conflict, but like senseless cruelty for the sake of shock. Moreover, the game barely explains Barkov’s motivation. At best, one line in the dialogue.

Sometimes there is a hint that “this is not exactly the Russian army”, but rather Barkov’s private army. The localizers played along – in the Russian version they often say not “Russian soldiers”, but “Barkov’s people”. But this does not reduce the feeling of a cheap cliché. The state position of Russia is not voiced at all – as if no one noticed that the general is waging a war in another country. As a result, we have a standard image – faceless “Russians” under the command of a crazy general who does whatever he wants. This is not even propaganda in its purest form – it is written too naively and primitively. It looks more like creative laziness. The Russians are just a conveniently placed villain. The real enemy is the terrorist organization Al-Qatala, which arose as a reaction to Barkov’s brutality. In other words, the Russians were used only as a trigger to get things going.
And yet, despite these excesses, the story in the game holds up. Yes, at times the mind gives in under the pressure of spectacular scenes, but overall the plot is consistent and logical. The characters, although cliched, are alive. Farah, the leader of the Urzykstan rebels, and her brother Khadir are especially good. Their motives are clear, their actions are justified in their frame of reference. It is in moments like these that Modern Warfare really shows how complex war can be. It’s a shame that these glimpses are drowned in cliches and simplifications.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 Gameplay Breakdown
Modern Warfare 2019 is not about pathos, not about nuclear explosions and definitely not about the collapse of the Eiffel Tower. Instead, the game immerses you in a dark, tense atmosphere, as if you were in the film “Sicario” by Denis Villeneuve. Infinity Ward demonstrates that they do not need large-scale decorations – they know how to capture attention without them. Each scene here is as if filmed by a director: bright, thoughtful, engaging. Each mission is like a separate episode, changing not only the setting. Already at the very beginning, you are given a sense that everything is serious here: during the storming of the warehouse, the enemies turn off the lights, and you are forced to move in complete darkness, relying only on the weak glow of flashlights on your helmets. Silence and tension make you listen to every sound – after all, danger can lurk around any corner. And it is at such moments that you begin to feel like a real special forces soldier.

What was especially pleasing was the shooting. For the first time in a long time, the shooting in Call of Duty feels realistic. The feeling of the weapon is worked out to the smallest detail:

Each weapon has its own unique recoil and weight;

Shots sound dull and impressive, especially indoors;

Bullet hits are felt physically – visually, by the sound and rhythm of the battle;

There is a clear difference between shooting in different conditions: on the street, in the house, in the tunnel;

Random civilian casualties cause an emotional response, and not just a penalty.
Ballistics here are not just an effect. Shootouts in narrow spaces can easily be confused with shots from an action movie.
Modern Warfare takes an important step forward for the entire series. Narrow corridors gradually give way to more open locations, where the player himself chooses how to act. Closer to the finale, you are parachuted into a night city without a clear line of passage: if you want – go stealthily, if you want – organize an assault. And even in linear episodes, the developers do not repeat themselves – sometimes you break into a cottage, not understanding where the enemy is and where the hostage is, sometimes you slowly move through a mined tunnel, where one mistake can cost you your life.
Multiplayer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019
If the single-player campaign of Modern Warfare can sometimes cause confusion due to naive plot twists (although the ending somewhat rehabilitates the overall impression), then the multiplayer is a completely different matter. Here, everyone will find something for themselves. There are few modes, but they are chosen wisely: there is nothing superfluous, but there is a choice for every taste. He no longer slides across the map, but as if he is really in the thick of the battle: you can feel the inertia, every movement is felt consciously. Even familiar modes like “team battle” or “everyone for himself” have acquired thoughtfulness and a little more tactics. It is not the same old Call of Duty, but there is still room to grow to Battlefield.
Sometimes the game unexpectedly resembles Counter-Strike, especially in the “Firefight” mode, where two pairs of fighters clash on a tiny map. Leveling up does not matter here: everyone has the same weapons and changes from round to round. Everything is decided by skills, reaction and teamwork. In other modes, everything is familiar: you collect sets of equipment, open perks and upgrade weapons. The longer you play, the more options. Each weapon lives its own life: modifications, paint jobs, attachments are unlocked. Rifles with medium-range optics and shotguns are still popular – ideal for close combat. Machine guns no longer knock down everything in a row – there is now a spread. Pistols and SMGs are still controversial, but sniper rifles can work wonders on open maps. Although, as practice shows, in skilled hands any gun becomes deadly.

Infinity Ward even tried to play by the rules of Battlefield, adding the “Ground War” mode with 64 vs 64 battles and vehicles. In theory – large-scale and spectacular. In practice – chaos: the map seems to be created specifically for campers, and snipers feel right at home. You can die without firing a shot and without understanding where the shot came from. A couple of such deaths — and you already want to return to the balanced “10 vs 10”. Especially since the maps for these matches are really good: they move away from the banal corridor structure and offer more space for maneuvers and unexpected tactics.
For those who prefer to play in co-op, there is a “Special Operations” mode. It seems to continue the plot, even the Russian special forces are on the side of good here, but… something is missing. There are almost no plot inserts, you just appear on a huge map and perform typical tasks – from hacking to destroying equipment. It would seem that everything should work. But the balance failed: enemies pour in waves, and without well-coordinated interaction it is almost impossible to complete the mission. Especially if you play with strangers. There is potential, but the implementation is disappointing so far.
Is the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 worth playing?
From the first minutes it becomes clear how much soul and effort Infinity Ward has put into this project. Call of Duty is no longer just an attraction with explosions and scripted scenes – it is now a truly exciting shooter that is pleasant to play both alone and online. For me personally, this is the best part of the series in terms of shooting and general mechanics in recent times.
