The strategy Broken Arrow, created by the Russian studio with the eloquent name Steel Balalaika, was released in early access in June and immediately made a splash. In the first weeks, the project sold an impressive number of copies – according to various sources, from 250 to 300 thousand copies, which brought the developers approximately $ 11.5-12.2 million. However, the stormy start was quickly replaced by a new agenda. In the news about the game, headlines like “Developers apologize”, “Invasion of Chinese cheaters” or complaints about unbalanced mechanics are increasingly flashing. So the main question now is – what does Broken Arrow look like after some time, when the first wave of enthusiasm has already subsided?

Broken Arrow paints a rather dark but fascinating picture of a possible military clash between the US and Russia. It all begins with the Americans attacking Kaliningrad, and Russia responding with strikes against Lithuania and Estonia. Interestingly, the campaign is designed in such a way that the player is given a chance to see the conflict from both sides. And this is not just a series of missions, but connected stories with memorable characters and well-written dialogues.
The American campaign is built on the confrontation between an old-school general, accustomed to solving everything with weapons, and a diplomat-adviser who is looking for softer ways out of the crisis. In the Russian scenario, the key role goes to the agent of the Foreign Intelligence Service Elena Morozova. Already in the first scene, she openly speaks about her superiors in not the most flattering terms, and later it becomes clear that she herself does not fully understand the true scale of what is happening.

The missions here are a real adventure. Almost two dozen missions are filled with dynamics: first, we intercept a convoy, then hold an important crossroads, call in fighters to suppress enemy air defense, organize a landing of troops and a rapid capture of an airfield, and then there is an assault on neighboring barracks under the pressure of continuous counterattacks. Moreover, failure does not always lead to “Game Over”. Sometimes mistakes only complicate the task and change the further course of events. For example, if you fail to hold the captured fort, the general will give you a dressing down and warn that now the landing threatens to turn into a “new Omaha Beach” – but this will not stop the game.
However, the story campaign is more reminiscent of an extended training mode. The main emotions begin in scenarios and additional modes. The developers offer classic missions to capture and hold points, but users in the Steam Workshop have already gone all out – there is a zombie apocalypse, and an alternative history where the USSR did not collapse, and the Cold War broke out again in 2019. In addition, the game has skirmish on nineteen maps: you can fight against bots alone or with friends in a co-op. The initial restrictions on single battles with AI, which caused a flurry of criticism, were later removed. Well, the main highlight of Broken Arrow is, of course, multiplayer. Large-scale five-on-five matches take place here, and it is for these battles that many enter the game again and again.

Broken Arrow Gameplay
Broken Arrow is based on a time-tested formula familiar to fans of World in Conflict and modern strategies like WARNO. The player receives command points, which are gradually restored depending on the situation on the battlefield, and spends them on calling in units. There are over three hundred such units, and their detailed development is one of the main advantages of the game.
In the story campaign, we are given a ready-made set of troops, but in other modes we have to assemble our own “deck”. First, we need to choose two specializations out of five available. For Russia, these are, for example, the Airborne Forces, the Guards Tank Brigade, motorized or mechanized units, and coastal troops. For the United States, these are marines, the Stryker Regiment, the Tank Brigade, airborne infantry, and special forces. After that, we recruit units, each of which costs a certain number of points, while the total limit is ten thousand.
The winner is the one who not only competently assembled an army, but also managed to correctly select it for a specific battle. However, preparation alone is not enough — in the battle itself, it is important to be able to quickly assess the situation and introduce the necessary forces in time. Sometimes it is obvious that it is worth destroying the air defense or treating the enemy fortifications with artillery first. But in multiplayer, much more confusing situations happen, and a pause, of course, is not available. Decisions must be made on the fly.

And here an important problem emerges — there is catastrophically little information about units during the battle. Yes, in the campaign you can read the dossier during the briefing, but it is extremely difficult for an unprepared player to remember dozens of models of armored vehicles and aircraft, the differences between the Grad and the Tornado-S, or the nuances of using different types of infantry. Dry numbers and icons do not help.
Broken Arrow makes you learn from your own experience. The developers have provided an “Arsenal” — a menu where you can study the characteristics of all units and weapons. Yes, there are icons and tables again, but there is more information, and gradually you begin to get your bearings. The best advice is to start on an easy difficulty level to calmly get the hang of it, and only then move on to more serious battles.
At the same time, controlling troops requires more than just standard actions like “send to attack,” “hide a tank behind a house,” or “land infantry in a building.” It’s important to know a lot of little things. Most units shoot on their own, but artillery will have to be directed manually. You can prohibit vehicles from firing without an order, turn radars on or off, activate heat traps on aircraft, use smoke screens, and highlight targets with a laser. At higher difficulty levels and especially in multiplayer, these subtleties come to the fore: victory depends on how quickly and correctly you control your army — not only with the mouse, but also with hot keys.
Broken Arrow ultimately turns strategy into a real art of war, where knowledge of units, attentiveness, and reaction speed are most important.
Analysis of balance, bugs and cheaters in Broken Arrow
You only have to listen — and Broken Arrow already grabs you: a powerful soundtrack sets the atmosphere, and the graphics allow you to literally “come down to earth”, to see the smallest details of equipment, the faces of soldiers, volleys of guns and the roar of explosions. At such moments, the game seems to come to life, conveying the feeling of chaos on the battlefield — when the earth trembles under your feet, and in the sky everything is decided in seconds.
But along with delight come the first disappointments. It is already clear that the project has weak points. The balance is noticeably lame: the American army is often noticeably stronger than the Russian one. Too powerful drones and tanks with dynamic protection also raise questions — experienced players write about this more and more often.
There is another problem — cheaters. There are especially many of them from China, which is not surprising: this country accounts for almost a third of all sales of the game. The strange “selective realism” is also actively discussed on the forums: a missile is not able to destroy a tank, but for some reason a small forest belt completely blocks the air defense radar. Such details are most noticeable to genre veterans, and their list of complaints is long.

Beginners may not feel any distortions, but everyone notices technical bugs. Crashes, freezes, minor errors – this is already part of the reality of Broken Arrow. For example, several times in a row in one mission the game simply did not unpause, although the rest of the animation continued to work.
Nevertheless, do not forget: the project has just been released, and patches and improvements are ahead. The main thing is that the game has a solid foundation – the gameplay base allows Broken Arrow to already claim the title of one of the best RTS of the year. The rest, hopefully, will be improved over time. And we – as in battle – do not give up, continue to play, believing in the best.
