Borderlands 4 is the first looter shooter from Gearbox that managed to really hook me again. The last time I experienced such emotions was back in 2012, when the legendary Borderlands 2 was released.
Yes, The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3 and even the bright spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands had their advantages. But each time there was something that ruined the mood: either the pace sagged, or the plot turned into torture, or the ending turned out to be too empty and did not give the adrenaline that you expect from the series.

Here come the first Borderlands 4 reviews – like rare loot from a defeated boss. Judging by the reactions of critics, Gearbox took into account the mistakes of the previous part and tried to fix the mistakes that fans did not like in Borderlands 3. The result is a content-rich looter shooter, in which the signature humor has not gone anywhere, but has become noticeably less intrusive.
At the time of publication, the project’s ratings look impressive: 84 points on Metacritic (the press code was only distributed for the PC version so far) and the same 84 on OpenCritic, where absolutely all reviewers recommend the game. However, some major media outlets, such as PC Gamer and Eurogamer, for some reason were left without early access. However, Borderlands 4 already ranks second in the series in terms of points, behind only the sequel, which scored 89 at the time.

As for impressions, journalists unanimously note the driving shooting, pleasant visual style, interesting open-world design and a rich variety of opponents. The rewards feel weighty, and the humor is more appropriate. Although the ironic remarks of the heroes, who strive to comment on absolutely everything, still remain, but now they are perceived less tediously.

Borderlands 4 Plot
Borderlands 4 takes place on a new planet called Kairos. After the finale of the third part, real chaos ensued here. It all started when the Siren Lilith forcibly moved the satellite Elpis into the planet’s orbit, which completely disrupted the natural flow of time. This was used by a dictator nicknamed the Keeper of Time – together with his army, he subjugated the entire system and turned the inhabitants of Kairos into hostages.
The player acts as one of four new Vault Hunters. According to the plot, we managed to be captured by the Keeper’s people, but miraculously managed to escape from the camp. From this moment on, the path through three different biomes of Kairos begins: we free the locals, gather allies and gradually create the Scarlet Resistance, which will become the last hope for the planet.

The plot itself cannot be called intricate, but for a dynamic looter shooter it works perfectly. The Keeper of Time doesn’t look like a cartoonish villain, but rather a strict dictator with harsh methods. It seems that Gearbox decided to abandon the overly intrusive and annoying villainous duo of the third part, making the story more restrained and exciting.
The presentation of the characters deserves a special mention. Unlike Borderlands 3, the script in the new game turned out to be much more integral and developed. Each hero has a distinct personality, secondary characters are sympathetic, and familiar figures from previous games are written much better. Even Claptrap, who could be annoying before, looks fresh and appropriate this time.
Borderlands 4 Gameplay
Overall, Borderlands 4 remains true to its roots — don’t expect a radical overhaul of the usual formula. Yes, the developers have moved to an open world, but in essence the player will still face endless skirmishes with bandit camps and familiar factions. Psycho-like Rippers, the soulless Order of the Keepers of Time and wild local fauna like the hovering Krechs or nimble Creeps — all this creates a sense of chaos and constant danger.
There is enough variety: there are “elite” enemies, opponents with unique behavioral modifiers, status effects and even posthumous surprises. Well, a special place is occupied by world bosses — real challenges that require well-thought-out tactics.

The main innovation is, perhaps, the movement system. Never before has moving around the world of Borderlands felt so smooth and convenient. The grappling hook has become a real gift: with its help, it is easy to climb high places, attract explosives and send them straight into a crowd of enemies. Add to this the glider, evasive maneuvers and dashes in the air – and the dynamics of battles reach a completely new level.
Transport has also been transformed. Now you can call a compact hovercraft at any time – without unnecessary trips to the garage, as you had to do before. This solution makes life much easier and saves time, especially when the Kairos map seems endless. For fans of the classics, fast travel points have been preserved, available at large outposts after clearing the territory.
The world is filled with activities: side quests, hunting for hidden vault symbols, clearing enemy bases or searching for key fragments. Personally, I never had the desire to squeeze the game to its full potential, because the rewards most often come down to expanding the backpack and additional ammunition. This, of course, is convenient, but it is unlikely to surprise anyone.
Best Borderlands 4 Characters
Borderlands 4 once again centers on treasure hunters, and this time the studio has prepared a truly colorful cast of heroes. I decided to play my first run as a siren named Vex, just like in previous games. And I’ll be honest – this is probably my favorite siren in the entire history of the series. Her sarcastic nature, self-confidence, and audacity are perfectly combined with powerful combat abilities. Vex can create copies of herself that not only distract enemies, but also tear them to shreds with elemental attacks. Watching her turn the battlefield into chaos is a pleasure. Harlow looks no less striking. Her skills are more focused on team support and crowd control, but the main thing that sticks in your memory is her “Chromatic Accelerator.” Essentially, these are mini-analogues of a nuclear explosion that destroy everything alive in their path. As before, each skill can be improved and modified – for each new level you are given a skill point. Plus, the specialization system is extremely flexible: changing your build is cheap, so you can experiment freely until you find a playstyle that suits you.
Of course, where would we be without an endless arsenal? Guns, grenades, and all sorts of gadgets — all of this returns, but with interesting nuances. The rarity system is familiar: the higher the level — rare, exotic, or legendary — the more additional properties and modifiers. At the same time, weapons can now be assembled literally piece by piece from parts from different manufacturers, which makes each barrel unique.

For example, the classic Jacobs revolver boasts deadly power, but if you attach a Maliwan grenade launcher to it, it will acquire an elemental attack: a cloud of poisonous gas or an electric discharge. And if you supplement the design with the Tediore module, you can simply throw the pistol at the enemy instead of reloading — and the more cartridges are left in the magazine, the stronger the explosion will be.
Grenades have also been transformed. Now they are not only the usual “death balls”, but also, for example, deadly throwing knives from “Jacobs”. Moreover, you can insert ammunition into the grenade slot, turning them into an alternative to the rocket launchers from previous parts. A separate plus is that they are now replenished together with cartridges, so there is no longer a feeling that you are carrying a separate limited resource with you.
Borderlands 4: Pros and Cons
To be honest, I liked Borderlands 4 and enjoyed playing it, but it wasn’t without its fly in the ointment. This is especially true for performance. The world here is huge and diverse: you can wander through dense green forests, climb snow-capped peaks, wander through deserts that are reminiscent of good old Pandora, or explore dilapidated factories and futuristic bases. The atmosphere is top-notch.
But you have to pay for such beauty. Optimization on PC leaves much to be desired: FPS drops and lags were regular occurrences, even on a modern Nvidia graphics card. DLSS and frame generation support saves the situation a little, but the problem doesn’t go away globally.

It’s worth mentioning the graphics settings separately. Sometimes, after launch, they would go wrong on their own: either DLSS would be disabled, or the preset would switch, and sometimes the entire set of settings would change without warning. Eventually, you notice a drop in performance and go to the menu to fix what’s broken. I hope that the developers will fix this in future patches.
The gameplay is generally lively, but enemies with some modifiers clearly spoil the impression, especially on the first playthrough. Fighting mobs that have infinitely regenerating health or three additional ones (armor, shields, etc.) on top of the main scale is, to put it mildly, boring. This turns them into punching bags rather than really interesting opponents.
What pleased:
-
The loot is still addictive and motivates you to continue playing.
-
A huge and bright open world.
-
The skills of the Vault Hunters are well-developed and interesting.
-
The soundtrack turned out to be unexpectedly good and atmospheric.
What disappointed:
-
The rewards sometimes do not justify the effort.
-
Weak optimization on PC.
-
Some enemy modifiers cause only irritation.
-
There is no photo mode, which is so needed in such a colorful game.
