Electronic Arts has repeatedly emphasized that work on Hardline began far from yesterday. They say they understand perfectly well that a serious project cannot be completed in a year and a half. Moreover, according to them, the germ of the idea appeared back in the early 2000s. However, there is a strong impression that key decisions were made literally at the last moment – the desire to patch up old holes and correct what did not work in the previous parts of the series is too obvious.

The single-player mode in the Battlefield series has always played a secondary role, and Hardline, alas, was no exception. Yes, you can justify the weak “single” by saying that fans come here for the multiplayer – but this does not make the story campaign less disappointing. Especially when it is presented as a full-fledged part of the game, and the price remains quite serious.
This time, we are offered to get used to the image of an honest cop named Mendoza. He is a straightforward guy who found himself up to his ears in criminal machinations, corruption, mafia wars and other “charms” of the life of a law enforcement officer. There is no point in revealing the plot twists – the Internet has long chewed everything up, and spoilers are not very pleasant for anyone. Better to talk about the essence.

Electronic Arts, it seems, tried to take a step towards cinematography and entrusted the single-player campaign to the Visceral Games studio, known for Dead Space. The format of the series, actors with a name – sounds promising. Here you have Benito Martinez, familiar from “House of Cards”, and Kelly Hu from cinema and TV. The characters look good, the cutscenes are filmed cheerfully… but what’s the point if the script is empty? No matter how many stars you call, if there is no sensible plot, everything will look forced and unconvincing.
The developers tried to dilute the classic linear action with something “new”: stealth mechanics, spacious locations, freedom of choice. But all this works only on paper. In reality, there is almost no variability, the enemies are blind and deaf, and an attempt to quietly arrest an enemy around the corner is perceived by others as something absolutely normal. Large locations are dead. They are empty and do not contain anything interesting, except for meaningless wandering. All this was played on Hard difficulty. And you know, the difficulty is expressed exclusively in the fact that you are knocked down with a couple of shots. The artificial intelligence remains at the same level – there is no improvement in the behavior of opponents.
And closer to the end, even the desire to play carefully is lost. Stealth, non-lethal eliminations – all this for the sake of the “expert” level, which opens access to new guns. But having reached the ceiling of progression, there is simply no point in going quietly further. It is much easier to turn on the Rambo mode and go through the remaining missions with a fight – faster, more interesting, and most importantly, with that same recently unlocked arsenal. Localization is a separate pain. The voice acting in Russian sounds too serious, even comical in its attempt to seem dramatic. Not a drop of self-irony, not a shadow of liveliness in the intonations. Everything sounds either overplayed or emotionless – as if the actors forgot to explain what scene they are participating in.

The result is a drawn-out, bland story that barely holds attention. The only entertainment is catching bugs and making memes out of them. Everything else — the plot, the acting, the supposed variety — feels plastic and secondary. Even compared to the formulaic but spectacular productions of Call of Duty, everything here is somehow soulless. Finished, forgotten, and with relief went into multiplayer — that’s the whole point of the single-player campaign of Battlefield Hardline.

The Best Game Modes in Battlefield Hardline
Forget about thundering tanks and heavy armored vehicles — this is a completely different Battlefield. This is Hardline: fast, chaotic, and daring. It is full of chases, shootouts, and a police action movie atmosphere. Of course, favorite modes like Team Deathmatch and Capture are still here, but they are joined by completely new entertainment. Let’s start with perhaps the most controversial new features — Rescue and Tracking. These modes are like an attempt to bring in a bit of tactics, but the result is ambiguous. Each involves five players on each side. In Rescue, the police’s task is to rescue the hostages, and the bandits’ task is to disrupt the rescue operation. In Tracking, the focus is on a “VIP” — a former criminal who decided to cooperate with the investigation. Some are trying to eliminate him, others — to bring him to the evacuation point. Intriguing? Perhaps. But in reality, alas, more often than not, it just turns out to be running around without a goal. Without respawns, without clear team interaction, and with empty servers it’s a disaster now. It only works in those rare cases when two well-coordinated teams meet – that’s when the real show begins.

But the other modes are more interesting – players have already gotten used to them a little since the beta test. One of the most action-packed is “Robbery”. Bandits try to steal bags of money and bring them to the exit point, the cops do everything to disrupt the plan. Fights here often reach real madness, especially if it happens in tight locations like a bank vault. Even if the criminals manage to steal the bag, the police have a chance to intercept and return the loot back. True, the balance of the maps sometimes fails: for example, one of the evacuation points in “Bank Robbery” is located right next to the police base, and this still irritates since the second “beta”.
There is also another “money” mode – “Blood Money”. There is a cash vault in the center of the map, and both teams are trying to fill their pockets and then hide the money at their base. But no one is stopping you from stealing a couple of packs from your opponent. You have to watch three directions at once:
-
a central safe with common cash,
-
your own base where you need to bring the loot,
-
and an enemy stash, which can also be emptied.
As you might guess, the “richest” team at the end of the round wins.
Hardline turned out to be not so much about war as about police routine on steroids. Less armor – more speed. And even if not all modes worked out, there is more than enough drive and chaos here.
Battlefield Hardline Multiplayer
And now — about the most striking and, perhaps, controversial mode of Battlefield Hardline. We are talking about “Hijack”. It is called the cherry on the cake: the idea is really cheerful — instead of banal capturing of points, you fight for… cars. Yes, yes, to “capture” a point, you need to get behind the wheel and rush around the map. While you are at speed, the point is considered yours. The longer you maintain the pace, the more points you accumulate. But not everyone liked it equally. Some complain that spinning in circles quickly gets boring. Others are delighted: speeds, explosions, drive, shooting from windows and constant action all over the map. Hardline is rarely so fun and chaotic at the same time.
What especially adds to the atmosphere is that music now plays in the cars. And even with the ability to switch tracks. And if you want to add spice, you can always lean out of the window and shoot everything that moves, and your allies, if not complete useless passengers, will throw you a repair torch. While you were pressing the gas, they were fixing the car — and voila, a bonus to survival, and therefore to points.

Another cool feature — now you can “borrow” the necessary equipment from allies right in the middle of a battle. There is no longer any point in running around and begging someone to throw you some ammo or a first aid kit. Just come up and take it yourself. Convenient, especially when time is running out in the middle of a battle. And if you are looking for something more powerful — look around. Now the same RPG or Stinger are not tied only to the engineer class, but are located in certain points of the map. If you want it — take it. But if you want something really cool — save up money and buy the necessary weapons or gadgets.
What you can buy:
-
new guns and attachments;
-
unique gadgets like a cat-clinger or booby traps;
-
combat kits and modified boosters, where you choose for which actions you get additional rewards.
The game arenas are perfectly tailored to the modes: in “Rescue” and “Tracking” – tight and tense streets, in “Capture” – spacious locations for large-scale battles. So far, nine maps are available, but do not doubt – new ones will arrive with the DLC. The destruction here is not amazing, but sometimes Levolution happens – for example, a construction crane falls or a dust storm hits, in which almost nothing can be seen.
Is Battlefield Hardline Worth Playing in 2025?
To be honest, during the beta testing phase, Battlefield Hardline looked much more promising. The developers actively interacted with the community, listened to the feedback of loyal fans, and the release was postponed from 2014 – supposedly to properly polish the balance and enhance the uniqueness of the new setting. But, alas, the final result did not live up to expectations. You often catch yourself thinking: it seems like you should have a fresh story about the eternal struggle between police and criminals, but it all feels like good old Battlefield – only without large-scale battles and tanks.

Nevertheless, there are bright moments. In some modes, you can really get stuck – especially if you are lucky with your team and the enemy is not one of the bots. Although, to be honest, this is true for almost any multiplayer. Fans of epic battles in the spirit of Battlefield 3 or 4 will most likely find the gameplay here too chamber and unusual. It is not surprising that the servers of the fourth are still in full swing. Perhaps in the future, everything will be fixed. With DLC, new maps and combat sets, they can tighten the balance of weapons and revive dead modes. But knowing the speed and “quality” of patches from EA, it is hard to believe in this.
What I liked:
-
There are really exciting multiplayer modes
-
It’s clear that they at least tried to make the single-player campaign
What I was disappointed with:
-
Efforts were all that was needed: the campaign didn’t grab me
-
The balance in multiplayer leaves much to be desired: both maps, weapons, and modes need some work
