Ascend: Hand of Kul is a third-person action RPG where the player gets most of his pleasure from large-scale battles with hordes of monsters. The game immediately makes it clear: there is no deep plot here, and it does not shine with variety. The main emphasis is on endless battles and farming.
The problem is that the progression system is too monotonous: in order to somehow develop, you have to return to boring dungeons dozens of times, performing the same actions. In addition, the project practically does not allow for team play – most of the time is spent alone, which quickly becomes tiresome.

Ascend tries to stand out from other projects due to the large-scale war of three factions, where each is associated with the player’s choice of deity. In the regular version, the game is generally designed for single-player play, but still creates a sense of the presence of others. If you complete a task in one region together with other participants, you will see their ghostly silhouettes, highlighted in the color of their faction. At this point, you can show yourself in different ways: give a blessing, increasing the speed or health of another hero, or cast a curse, sending additional enemies into his world. All these interventions have to be accepted as part of the gameplay – somewhere they help, somewhere they hinder.
There is another interesting point: the territories that you have already conquered for your god can suddenly find themselves in the crosshairs of rivals. Then the game offers to interrupt the current task and protect the possessions. If desired, you can refuse and calmly lose the site – this does not entail serious consequences. But if you accept the challenge, an online one-on-one duel begins, and, surprisingly, such battles take place without delays and look quite dynamic.

The fights are memorable for the combination of weapons, magic attacks, blocks and rolls, especially when the opponents are really equal in strength. However, this equality is rare. The selection of opponents leaves much to be desired: most often, the one with a higher level or more powerful equipment wins. And here the main disadvantage of the conditionally free format appears – you paid, which means you got an advantage.

Is Ascend: Hand of Kul Worth Playing in 2025: Pros and Cons
Ascend’s economy is built in such a way that you have to pay for almost everything. Of course, you can’t buy weapons that are higher than your level – it sounds fair. But this is only the appearance of justice: all sorts of upgrades and bonuses that can be purchased significantly strengthen the character, increasing speed, defense and power for about half an hour. These passive “blessings” and “curses” are also active in multiplayer, and also require in-game currency. Want to wreak havoc or, conversely, earn the favor of other players? Get ready to fork out.
At the same time, it must be admitted that the developers did not overdo it. The game generously gives out “souls” – the main currency, which is enough for decent equipment and additional small bonuses. In addition, there is enough loot in the dungeons, although most often it is in a dead state and requires the restoration of the same souls.
But not everything is so smooth. Ascend has an “ascension” mechanic – the player can sacrifice the current hero and start over, getting a new warrior with a higher leveling ceiling. There is no threat of a full rollback: completed quests are saved, and there are enough bonuses for restarting. It sounds tempting, but in reality it looks like a way to push towards microtransactions – pay enough souls, and you can drag much more old weapons and armor into the new world.

There are also some really strange moments. For example, enemies are easy to ignore – run past a crowd of monsters, and they will not even think of catching up with you. Moreover, after opening a chest, the character becomes invulnerable, so you can calmly rush through the dungeon, collect all the valuables and leave without losses. And if you remember that death in the game is almost not punished by anything, the balance begins to seem slightly broken.
It is not for nothing that the project has a “beta” tag. Yes, the enemy variety leaves much to be desired, and the microtransactions go a bit overboard in some places. But we have to admit: the combat is well-designed, the art style is impressive, and the game is definitely not one of those that you forget after a couple of hours. The core gameplay does not create the feeling that everything revolves around money (well, except for the controversial “ascension” system). So even players with a limited budget can safely immerse themselves in the world of Ascend and enjoy the hunt for loot.
Pros:
-
Decent rewards for battles without mandatory spending
-
Atmosphere and style reminiscent of the best moments of Diablo
-
For a console project, this is clearly a cut above Too Human
Cons:
-
A limited set of enemies
-
Microtransactions sometimes spoil the experience, especially in multiplayer
