PlayVS logs into the AI. The amateur esports platform has announced a partnership with Theta Labs, a provider of decentralized cloud infrastructure. A joint project is the launch of an AI agent for student esports.

We are talking about the PCL Bot, an intelligent assistant for the PlayVS College League (PGL), one of the largest student leagues in North America. According to PlayVS, the bot will become an entry point to key information for more than 10,000 players and ecosystem participants: from match schedules to decisions on controversial tournament situations.

The functionality is not limited to player support. The agent will answer questions from colleges that are considering joining the league and assist brands exploring sponsorship opportunities. The system’s training is based on the official PCL regulations and tournament rules — the bet is on accuracy and a single source of truth.

“The integration of the AI agent is a step forward in how we support players and the student esports community,” said Charles O’Donnell, senior director of student esports at PlayVS.

According to him, the system reduces operational friction and makes the competition conditions more stable for all PCL participants.

The PlayVS College League started in 2025 and in a short time has grown to a network of more than 1,000 campuses across the United States. The league covers over 17 disciplines, including Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, and Hearthstone, with a focus on accessibility and scalability.

The partnership with Theta Labs was the first major agreement for PlayVS in 2026. Earlier, in September 2025, the company had already experimented with cross-industrial collaborations – then a joint project with Tottenham Hotspur was launched, aimed at involving fans through esports.

Theta Labs Experience in Esports Automation

For Theta Labs, working with the student segment is a new direction, but not the first experience in the industry. In recent years, the company has been cooperating with esports organizations, introducing AI tools for fan interaction and analytics. Among the partners are Team Heretics and 100 Thieves, for which chatbots with match statistics and real—time game analysis were launched.

Now the focus is shifting towards university esports. This is a logical expansion of the strategy: less hype, more system infrastructure and automation of processes within the leagues. And if PCL Bot proves itself in practice, such agents can quickly become the standard for large student competitions.
