At the start of the current league season, LCK and LCP suddenly released “Coach Comms”, a rather audacious feature that, in fact, adds a completely new layer to the League of Legends esports ecosystem.

Now the mentors of the teams at LCP and LCK have the right, by the way, to break into the air to their wards right during the skating rink. It’s very similar to the work of racing engineers who are constantly hanging on the ear of Formula 1 drivers — it sounds powerful, really.

Although this experiment definitely deserves attention, the feedback from the pros and coaches is still quite controversial. In the end, to be honest, it all comes down to one big question: will this tool really become a working winning factor, or is it just another marketing ploy that everyone will get tired of in a couple of months?

How Coach Comms works in League of Legends

The Coach Comms system is a fresh solution that was introduced just in time for the start of the 2026 competition cycle. The point here is simple — the headquarters of any team can connect directly with the players in live, using this as an additional control lever.

For the past 15 years, League of Legends coaches have, in fact, influenced the outcome only before the teams entered the Rift — through drafts, strategies, and training. As soon as the game started, the coaches turned into passive spectators, losing control of the situation until the very end — it’s a shame, let’s just say.

The new protocol should break this pattern. This year, the function gives the coaching staff the right to contact up to 3 times per match — each activation lasts up to 45 seconds, which is quite enough to adjust the course.

The first reviews about Coach Comms, however, are not very enthusiastic. A number of experts immediately stated that this is just another variable that will now have to be dealt with.

For example, the commander-in-chief of Gen.G Ryu “Ryu” Sang-wook downplayed the significance of the novelty at the LCK media day. He believes that nothing will change globally and everything will remain on the same track — apparently, he is skeptical.

However, the lack of an instant wow effect does not mean that you can forget about it. The group stage of the LCK Cup is already over — let’s look at the pros and cons of the system and see which team will actually make a profit.

Advantages of voice communication for strategy and macro games

One of the main arguments in favor is that the coach can give a kick or a valuable instruction precisely when the team is lost on the map.

Park “Edo” Jun-seok, who heads BNK FearX, noted that it helps when players start to “fuss” and they lack coherence. This approach helps to remove unnecessary chaos at times when confusion begins in the microphone — it’s valuable, isn’t it.

By the way, midlainer KT Rolster Gvak “Bdd” Bo-son unexpectedly admitted to himself that the system works better than he thought. According to him, a prompt that arrives on time can be extremely useful — it returns players to the original plan and reminds them how to use the space on the map more efficiently.

Another profit from Coach Comms is the struggle for focus. The history of esports knows a lot of examples when top talents simply “tilted” and broke under the pressure of responsibility in important matches.

Now the coach can step in in time and put out the fire in the player’s head — psychological support in real time can reduce the number of fatal errors. This idea was also confirmed by Ju “oDin” Yeong-dal from DN SOOPers, who sees this as a powerful tool for mental control.

In addition to purely gaming moments, Coach Comms also gives bonuses to the audience. LCK uses the recordings of these talks to show fans the team’s “kitchen” — it’s not just content, but a chance to finally see the coach’s real impact on the result. This question, in fact, has plagued the entire League of Legends community for years.

Disadvantages of Coach Comms and risks to the team rhythm

The Cons of Coach Comms in LOL

Despite the apparent coolness, the new coaching inclusion system has enough dark spots. Take Mun “Oner” Hyeon-jun, the T1 forester, for example. The guy stated in an interview that his roster almost does not use this crutch. Moreover, he warned in general that such bursts into the air can easily disrupt the focus, which is like death in esports. In short, if the coach decides to chat at the wrong moment, when the players need to drag in a micro-moment, write it’s gone.

Yoon “Homme” Sung-young, the head coach of Hanwha Life Esports, also expressed serious concerns about this. Even if the mentor says the mega-right things, an extra voice in headphones creates more noise than it really benefits.

The legend of the League itself, the great Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, also did not hide the obvious. The T1 leader admitted — yes, the coach can tell you what the team missed in the heat of battle, that’s a fact. But on the other hand, such pauses severely break the rhythm of the game — it becomes much more difficult to maintain extreme concentration, however.

The effect of cognitive load on the microcontrol of players

The mentor’s voice in the Coach Comms system is, in fact, an extra audio channel that unceremoniously wedges into the game rhythm, provokes a tilt and makes it difficult to catch micro—moments. It’s about those very seconds in teamfights or while using the smith skill, when concentration should be exorbitant. At such moments, the pro is already juggling reactions to the flush, watching the positioning and the priority of goals. Any attempt by the brain to process incoming speech takes precious 0.2–0.3 seconds. This is enough to turn off the autopilot, and the decision is too late. Such noise directly affects micro-skill — in fact, Oner and Faker have already openly said that they don’t need extra voices in their headphones at key moments.

The dependence of reaction speed on external communication

All micro-decisions in League of Legends — whether it’s a flash played on time, using the smith skill, or a sharp rotation — are usually executed on pure reflexes, without logic. When the coach’s external verbal command breaks into this flow, the brain is forcibly pulled out of the state of drive. You have to switch between channels of perception, which wildly increases the cognitive load. As a result, reaction time increases, pure micro-performance goes to hell, and the player’s focus is spent filtering out unnecessary sounds instead of leading the map.

Do you even need voice communication with your coach in League of Legends?

In general, this feature is far from mandatory, but for some teams it can become a real lifeline. It all comes down to one thing — will it help your cast on stage specifically or will it just add to the problems.

Simply put, organizations with completely new roasters, those who do not find any synergy, or teams where there is simply no strict shotcaller will remain in the black. A mentor, of course, won’t teach you how to push buttons better, but his intervention can bring order to a macro game- especially where players pull the blanket over themselves.

Another cluster of teams that Coach Comms will benefit from is emotionally unstable teams that tend to “float” in stressful situations. A couple of encouraging words from the coach can keep discipline — in matches with crazy stakes, it really decides. Although this does not guarantee one hundred percent success. It all depends on individual perception — for some players, another voice in their ear will cause even more stress, that’s it.

Ultimately, for T1—level titans, where the synergy has been honed over the years and the structure works like a Swiss watch, Coach Comms’ profits look extremely questionable.
