Mei from Overwatch 2 is a scientist with a built—in cold power ability. He is able to freeze opponents and use the ice abyss to protect himself from attacks. Players first got to know her back on November 10, 2015, when the first part of Overwatch was released. The developers decided to keep Mei in the second project, and for good reason: her story still touches the hearts of fans.

Mei’s Story in Overwatch 2

According to the plot of Overwatch 2, Mei Ling Zhou— a researcher from China, had a life fighting global climate change. While working at the Overwatch Science center, she created technologies to control weather with less loss from natural disasters in Asia.

Fate has brought us into the abyss of events in Antarctica. When the polar storm broke out, the equipment failed — the connection was cut off, the life support systems stopped. Scientists have fallen into a distant life. For survival, the team decided on cryogenic freezing. It took nine long years before the Overwatch alarm woke Mei up. She was the only one who managed to survive.

Over the years, the Overwatch organization collapsed and the science stations were abandoned. Realizing this, Mei did not give up. Using improvised materials, she created an endothermic blaster, a device that transforms water into ice in a split second. With his help, the girl got to the tower and heard a message from Winston, a former Overwatch agent. He called for gathering heroes to save the world from the enemies of the whole existence.

Mei’s Endothermic Blaster

Motivated by Winston’s words, Mei packed up her things and took her faithful companion, the Snowball robot, with new adventures. Before the trip, an endothermic blaster was analyzed. From the USA, she headed to Asia to join the new team of heroes.

Following Winston’s advice, Mei keeps a personal observation diary — it helps her not only record climate data, but also look at the world through the eyes of a scientist who believes in a better future.

Mei’s Abilities and Weapons in Overwatch 2

In Overwatch 2, Mei still has a penchant for the endothermic blaster. The weapon releases a concentrated stream of cold that slows down opponents and causes damage to them. In addition, the blaster shoots ice projectiles, turning any battle into a storm of snow and ice.

Weapon Performance

Parameter Weapon Stats
Base Fire Damage (per second) 55
Alternate Fire Damage (per shot) 75
Ammo Capacity 120 rounds
Alt-Fire Ammo Usage 10 rounds per burst
Firing Speed (main mode) 20 charges/sec
Firing Speed (alt mode) 1 charge every 0.7 sec
Blast Radius 10 meters
Recommended GPU / CPU Radeon RX 7800 XT / Ryzen 7 7800X3D

The heroine has a weapon in her inventory that can cool the ardor of any opponent in two seconds — literally freeze him for a second and a half. In normal firing mode, May’s endothermic blaster slows down the enemy: the effect lasts for about one second.

The blaster fires while reducing the movement speed of opponents by 20-70%, turning the battlefield into an icy arena.

Mei will look good against enemies using defensive abilities. Ice rays break through skills such as:

  • “Repelling attacks” by Genji;
  • The “Protective Matrix” D.Va;
  • The “kinetic capture” of Sigma.

The advantages of Mei are that she can freeze several opponents at once — the blaster charge passes through a crowd of enemies without losing strength.

Completing the heroine’s arsenal is a meteorological drone that forms a snowstorm and gusts of wind out of Winter. The drone taps on the Blizzard ability, which deals damage, slows down, and immobilizes those who stay in its range for too long.

Interestingly, the Mei drone is not susceptible to barriers and protected objects, so it causes maximum possible damage to enemies.

However, some heroes are able to repel drone attacks.:

  • Genji — applies “Repelling attacks”;
  • D.Va — neutralizes the threat through the “Protective Matrix”;

Orisa, Moira and the Reaper — leave the Blizzard’s area of effect using the skills “Protective Field”, “Disembodyness” and “Going into the shadows”.

However, the enemy can prevent the drone from launching if he destroys Mei at the moment of activation of the ability. Control effects also interrupt the attack — it is worth applying them before the device is released.

If a snowball from the drone flies through Batista’s reinforcing matrix, the Blizzard begins to deal double damage.

To protect herself and her allies, Mei creates an “Ice Wall” that blocks the view of enemies, blocks attacks, and blocks the way. The radius of application is up to 35 meters, the duration of the effect is 4.5 seconds, and the wall dimensions are approximately 3 × 8 meters.

The “ice wall” has properties of five vertical segments, each of which has a strength of 400 units. Variable characters like Genji, Hanzo, and Ratman can become a danger to her with their skills.

Players hiding behind a wall do not take damage from attacks like “Self-Destruct” D.Va or Reinhardt’s “Earthquakes”.

Interesting fact: the ice barrier completely blocks the “Coalescence” and “Transcendence” abilities of Moira and Zenyatta, and Moira’s “Biotic Sphere” simply bounces off it.

Among other things, the “Wall” can block Batista’s “Immortality Field Generator” — if the view is blocked, the immortality effect disappears after about half a minute.

When necessary, in Katya, Mei is able to destroy her wall with repeated use of the skill.

In critical situations, the heroine activates “Cryostasis” — creates an ice cocoon around herself, which absorbs damage and restores health. In this state, Mei cannot move, but restores up to 150 health points in 4 seconds.

The Cryostasis bonus replenishes the ammunition of the endothermic blaster — up to 15 rounds per second, a maximum of 60 units.

Although the hero in Cryostasis is not involved in capturing a point, he can still challenge a position on the map.

When Mei was removed from Overwatch 2

On November 1, 2022, the developers temporarily removed the heroine from the game for two weeks to fix bugs related to her abilities.

Why was Mei deleted?

The main reason is the bug with the “Ice Wall”. Players playing as Kiriko could teleport to Mei while climbing the wall and find themselves outside the map.

When was Mei returned

The character returned to Overwatch 2 on November 15, 2022, along with another update.

Conclusion

Mei is a researcher who wields the powers of cold. In Overwatch 2, she protects her allies with an ice wall, slows down enemies with an endothermic blaster, and summons a deadly “Blizzard” with her drone.
