Maximilian in Overwatch 2 — who is he really?
Maximilien from Overwatch 2 is an omnic seer on the Board of Leaders of the terrorist organization Talon. The character is surrounded by a halo of mystery in the system: outwardly refined, reasonable, but inside he hides the cold calculation and iron logic of artificial intelligence.
Who is Maximilian?
Maximilien is a long—time partner and friend of Akande Ogundimu, better known as the Fist of Death. 8 years ago, before the collapse of the Overwatch organization, the Blackwatch division monitored Maximilien’s activities. He was able to put himself forward to the ability to calculate everything one step ahead and keep the situation under control.
The character’s story
The developers of Overwatch 2 are in no hurry to reveal Maximilien’s past. It is only known that he once worked as a financier, then went into business – he bought up enterprises, created companies and soon became an independent player in the economic field.
They had an association with the notorious criminal Antonio Bartolotti. After the death of the latter, Maximilien seized the moment and consolidated his influence in the “Claw”.
Unfortunately, six years before the collapse of Overwatch, the organization’s agents arrested Maximilien. To save his own life, he revealed the location of the Death Fist. But the actions showed the trust of the allies — after the betrayal, Ogundimu went to prison. The informant’s name was kept secret at the time, and only a few people knew who was behind it.
Today, Maximilien is in power — he is on the Board of the “Claw” and supports the radical ideas of the Death Fist about the war between humans and robots. Within the organization, he serves as treasurer, controls financial flows and launders money through his own businesses: a casino in Monaco, a naval fort, a rum factory and a distillery in Havana.
Interesting facts
The name Maximilien is the French form of the name “Maximilian”, derived from the ancient Roman names Maximus and Emilian.
There are other French references. For example, the coincidence of the name with Maximilien Robespierre, the revolutionary of the XVIII century. And the golden pin in the shape of the livery of Tours, worn by the omnic, symbolizes change — after all, it was this livery that was replaced by the franc in 1799, which set up a new French political course.
Among other things, Maximilien is interested in Greek sculpture — he collects elegant statues with a taste for perfection of forms.
During the temporary mission “Retribution” in Overwatch, from the dialogue between Gabriel Reyes and Jesse McCree, Maximilian makes sense of the casino and other commercial facilities through which he scrolls the funds of the “Claw”.
