Shadow Isles

Nothing here ends the way it should. Grief caused the disaster that created this archipelago in the first place, and grief is still the substance most of its inhabitants are made of, centuries after the mist rolled in and stopped anyone from properly dying.

Viego, the Ruined King, is where the story starts: a monarch whose refusal to accept his queen’s death unleashed the curse that swallowed his entire kingdom along with him, and who now searches the mist for a woman he will never find. Thresh, the Chain Warden, was already cruel before the curse took him, and simply found a larger canvas for it afterward, collecting souls the way he once collected suffering. Hecarim, the Shadow of War, leads a spectral cavalry charge that never finishes and never needs to, since the war it belongs to stopped mattering long before it stopped happening.

Not everyone caught in the mist surrendered to it. Senna, the Redeemer, spent centuries trapped inside a lantern before turning that same suffering into a weapon against the mist itself, choosing to fight rather than dissolve into it. Yorick, Shepherd of Souls, tends to the dead rather than commanding them, treating the isles’ endless corpses as something closer to a duty than a resource. Maokai, the Twisted Treant, fights the same mist with roots instead of a blade, still holding a grudge that predates most of the isles’ younger ghosts.

Even the smaller, stranger figures here carry that same refusal to stay finished. Gwen was stitched into something new rather than left to rot. Karthus sings louder the more of him the mist erodes. Kalista exists only to collect on oaths the living broke, one betrayal at a time. Elise, the Spider Queen, chose her own transformation rather than having it forced on her, which makes her one of the few things in this archipelago that still resembles a decision instead of a consequence.

Nothing that happens on these islands is ever really over — it just changes shape and keeps going. What was once a kingdom, then a tragedy, then a curse, is now simply a place, and the people who wash up here tend to stop asking which of those three it counts as.
