GTA 6 is less than six months away—it is scheduled for November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is expected to be the biggest launch in the industry’s history. However, for millions of gamers worldwide, that day may be unavailable or severely limited.

And no, it is not just the price, although rumors of $100 per copy are also circulating.

GTA 6 Release Date and Platform Restrictions

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the sixth installment will be released on only two consoles—PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. There will be no PC version at launch. Furthermore, the company has not even announced a PC port or given an estimated timeframe.

GTA 6 console exclusivity

This is not new for Rockstar—the studio has been launching games on consoles and then PC for years. GTA V debuted in September 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but did not reach PC until April 2015—almost a year and a half later. A similar story happened with Red Dead Redemption 2. So, it seems PC owners will have to be patient.

GTA 6 Availability in Russia and Possible Bans

After February 2022, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, ceased sales of its games in the Russian market. Officially purchasing the publisher’s new releases in the country remains impossible.

The situation is exacerbated by calls to ban GTA 6 in Russia due to violence and, as it is commonly described, “promoting a criminal lifestyle.” Even if Take-Two decides to return, the game could face additional government restrictions. Russian players, accustomed to finding workarounds, will likely cope, but official access is uncertain.

Age Verification and Access to GTA Online 2

The online mode is a particular headache. Rockstar has not officially announced GTA Online 2 yet, but its arrival is certain—the current version is generating billions of dollars.

The problem is that strict age verification laws may be in place in different countries by the time the game is released. A prime example is Australia, where users may be required to undergo identity verification to access online services. This applies to both minors and those who are strictly confidential. If similar regulations are extended to other countries, GTA 6’s online segment will be inaccessible to a significant portion of the audience.

RAGE 9 Engine and GTA 6 Open World Overview

Forget static scripts and dumb NPCs driving along invisible tracks. The ninth iteration of Rockstar’s proprietary Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) brings unprecedented simulation density and a highly complex physics model.

This is a true game-changer.

Ray Tracing RTGI and Graphics in Vice City

The most important technical decision is that RAGE 9 switches entirely to RTGI, or ray-traced global illumination. No more baked light maps or static shadows. Every storefront, every puddle, and every skyscraper in Vice City will reflect light accurately. This means a colossal load on the hardware, but also a depth of field unmatched in previous games.

Artificial Intelligence and the NPC Memory System

Rockstar has patented a “social perception” system—NPCs no longer simply react to crimes, but evaluate your appearance, car make, and even your reputation in a specific neighborhood.

Forget the “kill a cop and everyone runs away” mentality. In GTA 6, characters will remember you. If you cause trouble in a certain neighborhood, locals will become afraid of you, provoke you, or call the police when you appear. Leaked code from 2022 contained the CharacterContext and WorldState variables—a direct implementation of the NPC long-term memory system.

Traffic Simulation in GTA 6

Rockstar has a patent for a “Virtual Environment Navigation System.” Every car on the roads of Vice City now has a purpose—NPCs simulate real-life trips to work, shopping, or vacations. They do not just spawn around the player.

If an accident occurs on the road, the AI will not be stuck in endless traffic. Cars will begin to look for a way around, reverse, or conflict with other drivers.

Reasons for abandoning previous generation consoles

Such AI development requires colossal processor resources. Older consoles would simply choke—that is why there is no backward compatibility, and never will be. The Zen 2 processors in the PS5 and Xbox Series X can barely handle the real-time calculations of thousands of intelligent citizens. A stable 30 FPS on base consoles is the realistic target.

Developing Rockstar game world without AI

Paradoxically, despite all its technological advancements, Rockstar has fundamentally rejected generative AI. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed: “Their worlds are handcrafted. Building by building, street by street, block by block.” Not a single building generated by a language model. In an industry where more and more studios are using AI to generate textures, dialogue, and entire environments, Rockstar is betting on handcrafted ones.

“Do I believe that tools alone create great entertainment? No, there is no evidence to support that,” says Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive.

And this is with a budget rumored to have exceeded $3 billion for labor alone. GTA V, released in 2013, still generates billions through its online ecosystem—it is this financial headroom that allows Rockstar the luxury of forgoing AI acceleration and polishing every detail to perfection.

GTA 6 System Requirements for PC and Consoles

After analyzing the platform’s technical base, GameGPU experts concluded that the Xbox Series S will require radical compromises. Developers will likely have to partially disable RTGI, replacing it with baked light, and the resolution may drop to 720p–900p during intense scenes.

Regarding the PC version, it is a long wait. Rockstar traditionally releases PC ports a year and a half after the console release. Estimated system requirements range from an RTX 2060 for minimum settings (1080p/30 FPS) to an RTX 4080 and higher for comfortable 4K gaming.

The RTX 4090 / RTX 5090 will require 32–64 GB of RAM.
