Activision has officially made a point: the next Call of Duty, which will be released in 2026, will not appear on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. No “stripped—down versions”, no multiplayer as a gift – the old consoles are left out.
The reason for the official statement was a rumor that broke out on the Web just the day before. An Alaix insider reported that Modern Warfare 4 is allegedly being tested on PS4. Fans began to build theories, and then the official Call of Duty account in X briefly and bluntly wrote: “We don’t know where it came from, but it’s not true. The next CoD is not being developed for PS4.”

Why is CoD 2026 Leaving PS4 and Xbox One Forever
This is the first time since the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts that the series skips an entire console generation. Simply put, over the past 13 years, the franchise has released 13 games on PS4 and Xbox One — and Black Ops 7 is the latest in this list.
For comparison, when the series left the PS3 and Xbox 360, the transition period took three games — Ghosts, Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3. This time there were as many as six cross-generational releases between the generations, and fans have long been tired of waiting.
New Engine and next Xbox: What players will get on PS5 and Series X
Abandoning old hardware is not just a marketing decision. PS4 and Xbox One were released in 2013, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to support them technically. According to insiders, since last year, the CoD 2026 engine has been undergoing major redesigns, including to combat the “visual overload” that plagued the series with Modern Warfare II.
In addition, development is underway on devkits for the next Xbox platform, codenamed Project Helix. This hints that the new CoD may become one of the main arguments in favor of updating the hardware.
Call of Duty 2026 will not be included in the Game Pass from day one
There is another important point that has been a little overshadowed. CoD 2026 will not appear in the Game Pass on the day of release. Microsoft has changed the subscription terms: the annual installments of the series are no longer included in Game Pass Ultimate from day one. In two years, only Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 have been released in the service — and this experiment, apparently, is over.
This is a double blow to the audience that is still sitting on old consoles: the game is not available to them, and they cannot get it by subscription.
Release date of Call of Duty 2026: what is known today
According to a Charieintel insider, Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to be released in October 2026, in full accordance with the usual autumn schedule of the series. There has been no official announcement of the game yet, but given the leaked details, denials, and Activision’s social media activity, it’s clearly not far off.
If all goes well, CoD 2026 will be the cleanest non-crossgeneration release of the series in almost a decade. For fans who have already switched to the PS5 or Xbox Series, this is good news. For everyone else, it’s a reason to finally think about upgrading.
