The Breach Studios and Team17 (Worms, My Time at Portia) announced that Westlanders will enter Early Access on PC (Steam) in early 2027. The full release will follow some time later on PS5 and Xbox Series X. The first details and a trailer have already been released.

What else is known?

Team17 seems to have spotted something special in The Breach. “Their unique take on the survival crafting genre hooked us from the start,” said Team17 General Manager Harley Homewood. “We know players will love this beautiful, hostile world.”

The Breach Studios co-founder Ferran Punti, in turn, called Team17 “the perfect publisher” to help make the team’s dreams a reality. They also thanked Radical Theory, their marketing partner, who has supported them for the past eight months. Without them, Westlanders might not be where it is today. The story trailer (watch it on Team17’s YouTube channel) shows the Wild West in all its glory: arid plains, clouds of dust, gunshots, and stern men in hats. The graphics, powered by Unreal Engine 5, look solid.

What can you do in the game?

Westlanders is a mix of survival, crafting, construction, and management—a sort of anthill with a cowboy twist. You start as a desperate survivor, with just a van behind you, which serves as a customizable mobile base. The van is your home, workshop, and hoof. Eventually, it can transform into the leader of a thriving economic network. Can you handle it?

Key features from the developers:

  • A living and dangerous world—a dynamic open world teeming with life and danger. Explore uncharted territories, find hidden locations, and special characters.
  • Build and create—from simple tools to brilliant inventions. A deep tech tree unlocks powerful equipment and useful buildings.
  • Settlement Construction – Transform wilderness into bustling hubs of trade and crafting. Customize your settlements to suit your needs.
  • Automation and Economy – Extract resources through farming, herding, and mining. Optimize production chains by hiring workers and automating them. The result is a developed economic network spanning the entire valley.
  • Single-player and Co-op – Explore the frontier alone or with friends. Co-op (supporting up to four players) allows you to share roles, build, and survive together.

How is Westlanders different from Red Dead Redemption 2?

It’s an obvious comparison, but the difference is fundamental. While Rockstar emphasizes a cinematic storyline and well-developed characters, Westlanders is primarily a sandbox game with a focus on survival and management. In RDR2, we play a bandit and follow Arthur Morgan’s story. Here, we’re cast as an ordinary settler, setting out in a van to build a new life from scratch. Westlanders is about systems, not a story. Comparisons to RDR2 are only limited, based on atmosphere and setting. Essentially, they’re two completely different gaming experiences under the same Western veneer.

How does Westlanders differ from Valheim, Rust, and other survival games?

An unconventional setting is half the battle. But the van, as a mobile base that can be upgraded and defines your playstyle, is a serious bid for originality. While in Valheim and Rust you’re firmly tied to your “home” and base, in Westlanders you’re constantly on the move, at least in the early stages. Furthermore, the developers place a strong emphasis on economics, automation, and labor management, bringing the game closer to titles like Satisfactory or Factorio, but in an open world with a cowboy charm. Essentially, Westlanders is a hybrid of RDR2 and Satisfactory, where economic simulation and settlement management take center stage and typically serve as a backdrop for survival.

What’s coming after Early Access?

The developers haven’t revealed a specific roadmap, but the general plans for Early Access are known. The game is expected to remain in Early Access for about a year. The 1.0 launch will coincide with the game’s release on PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. Over the course of the year, the developers will be working closely with player feedback, adding new content, fixing bugs, and polishing existing systems. New biomes, activities, settlement types, and production chains will likely be added. Specifics are still scarce, but the direction is clear.

Development Roadmap and Future Updates

The Breach hasn’t released a detailed roadmap, but the direction is clear: focus on completing 1.0, console support, and improving the co-op experience. The priority is revising and balancing the existing crafting, economy, and combat systems. We look forward to hearing more throughout the Early Access year.

Westlanders System Requirements

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB) / AMD Radeon RX 580 (8 GB)
  • DirectX: version 12
  • Available space: 50 GB

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB) / AMD Radeon RX 6800 (16 GB)
  • DirectX: version 12
  • Available space: 50 GB

These are average requirements, suggesting optimization and performance comparable to modern AAA projects on Unreal Engine 5.

Russian Language and Localization

So far, only English localization of the interface and subtitles has been announced (voiceovers are apparently only in English). Russian has not been confirmed for the game at launch. The community is already discussing fan-based translation options (fan patches). There is no official information about Russian being included in the roadmap. There is no hope for a Russian localization from the publisher yet.

Should Westlanders be added to your Steam wishlist?

Who should it be:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 fans who want to experience the story and also build their own empire in the Wild West.
  • Survivalists and builders tired of the forests and swamps of Valheim, the rocky wastelands of Rust, or the post-apocalypse of DayZ—at least here there are horses, prairies, and revolvers.
  • Fans of economic simulations in the spirit of Satisfactory and Factorio, but with an open world and the opportunity to shoot a Colt like a chef.

Who shouldn’t play it (or should wait):

  • Those expecting a cinematic storyline like in Rockstar games. This one doesn’t have it and won’t.
  • Players who don’t like survival games with crafting and endless resource management.
  • Those who are critical of localization: if English is the only problem, it’s better to wait for the release (or a fan patch).
  • Those with a weaker PC: the minimum requirements are a GTX 1060 and 16 GB of RAM. This isn’t a toy for office laptops.

Wishlist or not is up to you. But if you’re a fan of the Wild West and want to build settlements and trade while roaming the prairies, Westlanders will give you dozens of hours of exciting gameplay.
