Steam Machine by Valve: specs, price & is it worth buying in 2026 - Image 1

Valve has reported on the first few weeks of Steam Machine sales—and, despite skeptics, the device is exceeding expectations. The starting price of $1,049 (without a gamepad) hasn’t deterred enthusiasts: the first batch sold out faster than the company planned. Valve isn’t trying to compete directly with PlayStation or Xbox. As Jason Schreier stated, the goal isn’t volume, but rather bringing SteamOS to living rooms. And here, the system’s compact size plays a key role: it’s a fully-fledged PC the size of two books, which can be equipped with any OS, even Windows.

Steam Machine Specifications: What’s Inside for $1,000

The specifications include a 6-core AMD Zen 4 processor, RDNA 3 graphics with 28 blocks, 16 GB of DDR5 and 8 GB of video memory, and an NVMe drive ranging from 512 GB to 2 TB. The 2 TB model with a gamepad will cost $1,428. For comparison, the PS5 Pro costs around $900, but the Steam Machine has a significant advantage: access to the entire Steam library and upgradeability. However, 4K performance is inferior to the Sony console: in Cyberpunk 2077, the average FPS is 68 versus the PS5’s stable 60, and in Death Stranding 2, it’s only 35 versus 45. Valve scrupulously studied these figures and even removed the “4K/60 FPS” promise from its website, replacing it with “supports resolutions up to 4K.”

Steam Machine vs. PS5 Pro vs. Gaming PC – Which is the Better Value in 2026?

This comparison clearly shows that the Steam Machine is a niche product. The PS5 Pro delivers higher frame rates in demanding titles, while a $1,000 PC (for example, with a Ryzen 5 7600 and RTX 4060) offers more flexible settings. But if you value compactness, don’t want to mess around with assembly, and have already purchased hundreds of Steam games, then the Steam Machine is the perfect living room companion. It doesn’t try to be the best in everything—it offers a unique balance of size, ecosystem, and performance. And judging by early reviews, this balance has found its audience.
