The studio confirmed the key news: the expansion will be released this summer 2026—on all platforms at once: PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. This is a pleasant surprise for PS5 players: while the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 only reached them a year later, the expansion will be released simultaneously with everyone else. The exact date is still a couple of months away, but the window has become extremely narrow.

What was shown in the Cost of Hope trailer: a detailed breakdown of frames and plot hints

Developers GSC Game World have released a CG trailer, packed with symbols and direct lore references. If you examine the frames with a magnifying glass, you can piece together a complete picture of what awaits us—and where the studio is heading with the second S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy.

Return to Roots: Duty vs. Freedom

The central scene of the trailer is a direct clash betwer showed us two areas that ween two of the Zone’s oldest factions. Armory caches, tense faces, commanders glaring at each other like wolves. The plot perfectly captures the atmosphere: the fragile D4 treaty—the official truce between Duty and Freedom, signed back in 2013—is now crumbling at the seams. You will observe from the sidelines and also personally influence the outcome of this confrontation.

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant location

Two new legendary locations

The trailer showed us two areas that were previously inaccessible, but have lured every stalker for years:

  • Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant: The most recognizable symbol of the series. Visually, it’s grandiose. The X-ray background is off the charts. According to the description, the station “calls stalkers again” after decades of complete isolation. A point on the map opens, along with a large hub with a multitude of sublocations.
  • Iron Forest: The trailer reveals tangled, almost labyrinthine paths, suspiciously distorted space, and strange flora. Judging by the atmosphere, the developers are preparing serious puzzles with anomalies that won’t be solved by brute force.

Zulus and Mavka: Antiheroes or New Partners?

The character footage is a distinct plus. The trailer introduces the central pairing of the plot, who will replace the usual allies.

Zulus is an old acquaintance from Call of Pripyat. The trailer portrays him as a gloomy, weary veteran of Duty, disillusioned with his own faction and realizing that the real enemy is the Zone itself, not his political opponents.

Mavka is a completely new character from Freedom. The footage shows her energy and ambition—she’s a determined young woman, discovered and trained by Lukash, the former faction leader. Despite the antagonism between their factions, the trailer makes it clear that they will have to work together. The conflicting interests and ideologies within the same squad promises some very interesting dialogue.

The Hidden City and the phrase “Root of Evil”

The most intriguing part of the trailer is the close-ups of the mysterious abandoned city. Characters in the footage call it “the root of all evil in the Zone.” The footage shows gloomy concrete ruins, dysfunctional infrastructure, and a strange glow in the distance. Apparently, this is where the key secret of the expansion, and likely the entire second trilogy, will be revealed.

How will Cost of Hope affect the endings of the main game?

This is perhaps the most important point for those who have already completed Heart of Chornobyl and are considering a clean save. Cost of Hope is not an add-on that launches after the credits. According to the developers, the events of the DLC unfold parallel to the main campaign—strictly between the key missions “Wishful Thinking” and “Down Below.”

What this means for the endings:

  • Your decisions within the expansion will directly impact the final balance of power in the Zone.
  • In the base game, you had a limited choice of factions. In Cost of Hope, you decide the outcome of the war between Duty and Freedom, adding a new layer to the epilogue.

Major spoiler from insiders: the ending of Cost of Hope is a bridge to the third and final DLC. According to the writers, the consequences will impact “not only the Zone, but far beyond.” Clearly, we’re being prepared for a global cataclysm in the final expansion of the “second trilogy.”

⚙️ DLC System Requirements

Since the DLC is based on the same engine as the main game, don’t expect miracles. “The Price of Hope” uses the same graphics technology, so the hardware required is the same as for Heart of Chornobyl. However, don’t forget about the accompanying patch 2.0—if GSC delivers optimizations, performance may even improve slightly. But just to be on the safe side, keep this threshold in mind.

Minimum System Requirements — 1080p @ 30 FPS

Component Minimum Requirements (1080p @ 30 FPS)
OS Windows 10 x64 / Windows 11 x64
Processor Intel Core i7-7700K / AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Memory 16 GB
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB / AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB
Storage Space Around 150 GB, SSD required

DLC Price and Availability in Game Editions

At the time of writing, GSC Game World had not yet announced the exact price for standalone purchase. However, we have a solid baseline for our calculations.

Price by Edition:

  • Ultimate Edition / Season Pass: If you purchased the Ultimate Edition of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 or the Season Pass separately, “Cost of Hope” is already included by default.
  • Separate purchase: Analysts and insiders (players have already drawn parallels with the market) predict that the price will remain around $20 (approximately 1,500–1,800 rubles). This estimate is based on the price of the season pass and the standards for large story expansions for AAA titles.
  • Xbox Game Pass: Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive the DLC via the “Play Anywhere” system—no need to buy twice, the copy works on both console and PC.

☢️ Comparison of Cost of Hope with previous expansions in the series

I’d like to point out right away: we’re used to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. previously feeding us with complete, self-contained stories like Clear Sky or Call of Pripyat. Cost of Hope works differently—and this model may not appeal to everyone.

Criterion Shadow of Chernobyl / Clear Sky S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope
Content Type A full standalone game / independent prequel-style expansion A large story-driven DLC integrated into the main campaign
Structure A self-contained story with a new protagonist A parallel storyline that keeps Skif as the main character
Locations Completely new maps Long-awaited access to legendary areas: CNPP, Iron Forest, and previously closed zones
World Impact Limited impact, resolved within the expansion Direct consequences affecting the ending and the transition to the third DLC
Connection to the Series Relatively isolated stories A direct continuation of the “second trilogy”: base game → expansion → finale

The idea of dividing the story into three parts is a bold move. On the one hand, we’ll get many more well-developed quests and moral choices. On the other hand, we’ll have to wait another couple of years for the finale (the third DLC is expected to be released closer to 2028).

Developer Answers to Popular Community Questions

After reviewing official press releases and interviews, I’m highlighting the most pressing answers from GSC, which dispel rumors and clarify where we’re headed.

Do I need to complete the main storyline to start Cost of Hope?
No. Once you install the DLC, your PDA will receive a signal. The quest can be activated at any point during the game, but according to the canon, it fits neatly between the missions “Will of Will” and “The Abyss.”

“Second trilogy”—what does that mean? Will there be two more expansions?
Yes. Heart of Chornobyl is the first chapter. Cost of Hope is the second, central one. A third, final part is in development, which will conclude this arc.

Will there be new weapons?
Of course. The trailer and screenshots have already shown off new weapons, including the legendary SKS semi-automatic rifle, which the Duty soldier carries on his back.

When is the exact release date?
The developers are keeping the suspense high. So far, only “Summer 2026” has been clearly stated. Based on indirect evidence and leaks, many are leaning toward the end of August, but an official date hasn’t been announced yet.

Is Cost of Hope worth buying?

The gameplay mechanics are becoming deeper, we’re given access to the legendary nuclear power plant, and we’re given colorful characters with strong backgrounds as companions. There’s only one moral dilemma here: are you willing to wait a couple more years for the story’s conclusion, or would you rather get everything at once?

This expansion is a must-have for lore-based stalkers and fans of the universe. It’s not about action for the sake of action, but about atmosphere, the revelation of old secrets, and the opportunity to become the one who determines the fate of the Zone. If you’re tired of running through the same locations and want a real story-driven adventure, pick it up without a second thought. If you’ve been waiting for all the storylines to be resolved right now, it’s best to hold off until the third expansion is released.
