An early build of Sleeping Dogs has leaked online—an Xbox 360 prototype dated November 15, 2011. YouTuber GrandTheftAero posted a half-hour breakdown of the build, extracted from Eidos Interactive’s debug console. The files are now available for download. The version features cut mechanics, a different role for Ming, and an unused phone camera.

Briefly: this build, nine months before release, contains a playable prototype with rough textures, unmixed audio, and placeholder cutscenes. But that’s not the point. The point is the vast amount of content that didn’t make it into the final version. And the changes aren’t just cosmetic.

Sleeping Dogs Build Leak: Details on an Early Prototype

The build is dated November 15, 2011. It was extracted from a debug Xbox 360 console owned by Eidos Interactive—yes, the same one that published it alongside Square Enix. Inside the files, the game is listed as Orange Lotus—a working title that later changed to True Crime: Hong Kong, and then to Sleeping Dogs.

The game’s state is typical “early access” before that became fashionable. Some cutscenes are static images, the sound isn’t mixed, and the Hong Kong districts are still in rough shape. The tutorial mission, by the way, is more polished than the others—it was added later, apparently after the initial testing. A new feature? More like a reminder of what development looks like before polishing.

Cut Content and Differences Between the Prototype and the Release Version

Here’s the most interesting part. A lot was cut from the final Sleeping Dogs, and the prototype clearly confirms this.

Cut Mechanics:

  • Bonus Mission Objectives—Completing these awarded additional experience for a police officer or triad. A mechanic reminiscent of the honor system in Rockstar games, but for some reason didn’t make it to release.
  • Free phone camera – in the prototype, it’s always available, allowing you to save photos at any time. In the final version, it’s only available in story missions. A strange decision, considering that the Hong Kong in the game surpasses many open worlds of the time in atmosphere.
  • Cut weapons and vehicles – which ones exactly haven’t been specified yet, but the fact remains.

Storyline changes:

  • In the 18th mission of the prototype, you pursue Ming, not Naz. Ming had a significantly larger role – apparently, the script was rewritten closer to release.
  • A scene where the arrested Wei Shen sits in a police car with Naz was cut. Why it was removed is a mystery.

Development history of Sleeping Dogs from True Crime to the leaked build

The game went through three titles and two publishers. Initially titled Orange Lotus, the project was later renamed True Crime: Hong Kong for Activision. But in early 2011, Activision canceled development, deeming the project too risky. Square Enix acquired the rights in August 2011, renamed it Sleeping Dogs, and released it on August 14, 2012.

The build currently online was compiled a couple of months after the rights were acquired. This is a snapshot of what the game looked like immediately after the transition to a new publisher, a testament to how raw the project was at that point.

Sleeping Dogs 2 Cancellation and the Status of the Simu Liu Film Adaptation

Unfortunately, there will be no sequel. United Front Games was working on Sleeping Dogs 2, planning a co-op mode, a new open world, and even a companion app. But financial problems and the studio’s closure in October 2016 put an end to the sequel. But the film adaptation—yes, it’s still in the works. In 2017, the project was announced with Donnie Yen, but in early 2025, the actor declared it dead. However, the rights were later snatched up by Simu Liu (star of Shang-Chi). The script is being written by Jie Chung (Gotham), and Timo Tjahjanto (Nobody 2) is directing. At the end of July 2026, Simu Liu promised “very positive news.” There’s no release date or distributor yet, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Build Analysis Results and the Future of the Sleeping Dogs Franchise

Practical conclusion: if you’re a fan of Sleeping Dogs, now’s the time to replay the original and see what it could have been. The prototype is already online, and it’s not just a museum piece—it’s a glimpse into an alternate reality where the game could have had a completely different fate. And perhaps the film will happen after all. We’re waiting for news from Simu Liu.
