While the entire gaming world is rearranging its release calendars in an attempt to escape GTA 6, Chinese studio S-GAME has done the exact opposite: it’s moved Phantom Blade: Zero closer to Rockstar. The release will take place on October 29th—three weeks before GTA 6, which is scheduled for November 19th. And the developers genuinely don’t seem to care.

September 2026 has turned into a fierce battle. Marvel’s Wolverine, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword—major publishers have all fled to early autumn, rather than face Rockstar’s latest hit. Some projects have already been pushed into 2027: for example, Fable received a one-year delay largely due to the desire to avoid direct conflict with GTA 6. Others, like Barbie Rewind, have simply set their release for November. But Phantom Blade: Zero chose a third path.

Reasons for the game release delay to late October

The game was originally scheduled for September 9th. However, at Sony’s State of Play presentation, the studio announced a 50-day delay, until October 29th. In an interview with PC Gamer, the project’s director, Qiwei “Soulframe” Liang, laid out the reason very clearly: “We do not think about that at all. We only think about the quality of the product itself. I would say 99% of the decision was production-related.”

Fans, of course, were worried. Opinions were divided on forums and social media: some praised S-GAME for its focus on quality, while others predicted a commercial failure, claiming the October date was too close to Rockstar’s November media tsunami. But Liang apparently did not care. When asked directly whether releasing next to GTA 6 was stressful, he replied, “I have no idea. We do not think about what is going on out there. We do not even think about the competition, what comes out before or after. All that matters is how polished the game is.”

Phantom Blade Zero gameplay discussion

This is an important point. An extra couple of months of development is not a marketing ploy, but an opportunity to fix more bugs and perform additional optimization. S-GAME wants to avoid a massive patch on day one.

Differences between Phantom Blade Zero and GTA 6 for gamers

At first glance, comparing these two games seems like trying to cross a snake with a hedgehog. GTA 6 is a sandbox with a colossal open world where you can steal cars, buy real estate, and get caught up in a crime drama lasting hundreds of hours. Phantom Blade: Zero is a chamber-based soulslike action game with a focus on close-quarters combat choreography, semi-open locations, and a kung-fu-punk aesthetic mixed with steampunk and the occult.

Their audiences do not exactly overlap. GTA appeals to the mass market—from teenagers to adults, from hardcore gamers to those who rarely play games. Phantom Blade is aimed at fans of complex combat systems: those who have completed Sekiro and Black Myth: Wukong and are looking for the next challenge. This is a niche, but very loyal audience.

Moreover, S-GAME has already proven that it can attract players worldwide. In 15 days after its Steam page was released, the game accumulated one million wishlists, with over 50% of them outside of China: Europe, North America, Brazil, and Turkey. It is not a local hit for Asia.

Factors in the Commercial Success of a Chinese Action Game

Factor How it works
Genre uniqueness Soulslike with fast combat and 30+ weapon types — few direct competitors
Global wishlist 1M in 15 days, half from Western audience
Price accessibility Optimized for Steam Deck and no ray tracing — runs on low-end hardware
GTA noise filtering Players waiting for Soulslike won’t switch to sandbox
Delayed demand Some will buy Phantom Blade in October, some in December when GTA novelty fades

Game Community Reaction and the Risks of UE5 Optimization

It is also worth remembering the community’s reaction to S-GAME’s bold decision. Heated discussions erupted on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). Skeptics are panicking: “Guys, you are coming out after Wolverine and Call of Duty, after Onimusha, after Silent Hill… and right before GTA 6? Are you crazy? October 29th is business suicide.” Supporters, however, applaud the studio’s stance: “I love it. Take as much time as you need and release the best possible version for day-one fans.”

There are risks, of course. GTA 6’s marketing campaign will dominate players’ minds by early November—that is a fact. Any project released three weeks before that risks being overlooked by the mass market. S-GAME’s tactic is not “conquering the world,” but “making sure those who come to us get the best.”

But there is another threat: a global PC hardware crisis. The AI boom has sent hardware prices skyrocketing, and people are postponing upgrades. That is why the team is working hard to optimize for Steam Deck and achieve beautiful visuals even without ray tracing. For a game built on Unreal Engine 5, this is no trivial task.

Results and predictions for Phantom Blade Zero this year

Predictions for 2026: Phantom Blade: Zero has every chance of becoming a hit in its segment, but not a “GTA killer.” This is not the battle S-GAME is fighting at all. The battle is for quality. If the game is polished, fast, and atmospheric, it will find its audience. Even if the whole world is buzzing around it.
