The developers from Hello Games surprised us again. This time — without cosmic scales and new galaxies. Instead, they added a mode that no one expected, but which perfectly fit into the philosophy of the game: turn-based battles between tamed monsters. Yes, now you don’t just build bases and extract resources — you assemble a team, upgrade it and participate in simulated battles in arenas.
The update is called XENO ARENA, and it’s not just a cute mini-game. It’s serious.

How to assemble a combat team in Xeno Arena: Taming and composition
Types of creatures and their abilities in battle
Players will have to become Pokemon masters, only in the No Man’s Sky universe. Explore planets, find wild creatures in different biomes, and tame them. Each animal is unique: its abilities depend on its species, behavior, characteristics, and even its habitat. Someone goes head-on, someone puts debuffs, and someone supports the allies.
From these creatures, you assemble combat units. Just like in classic tactical RPGs — only instead of elves and orcs, you have slippery flying jellyfish and three-eyed cows from another planet.

Creature Leveling System: experience, mutations, and squad customization
XENO ARENA’s development system is not for show. Creatures gain experience in battles and gain access to genetic mutations. You can improve your speed, evasion, endurance, and ability effectiveness. Fine-tuning the team for a specific opponent? Easy. If you want to focus on damage, please, you prefer to exhaust the enemy, and this is possible.
Each battle is a test of your strategy, not just “who is stronger in numbers”.

Where the battles take place: Holo-Arena, Planets and Space Anomaly
There are two types of arenas. Holo-Arena — special tables scattered across planets and space stations. But the main location is Space Anomaly, the same interworld station where all travelers hang out. There you can meet other players, arrange a duel and check whose team is cooler.
A victory is counted when the opposing team is completely disabled. No timers, no “almost won”. The tactical possibilities are huge. And this is not an exaggeration.
But it’s one thing to assemble a team. And it’s quite another thing to learn how to manage it competently. Because in Xeno Arena, every move turns into a mini-calculator: calculated — won, fucked up — you watch your pet being blown to pieces.
Tactics and strategy in Xeno Arena: elements, counterpicks and composition
The basic mechanics that are silent in the training videos are spontaneous affinity. Fire types literally devour water types. Flying — ignores ground attacks (yes, that’s as unfair as it sounds). There are from 4 to 6 slots in the squad, and here the real puzzle begins. The tank in the first line absorbs damage, the damagers come in from the flanks, the healers hang from behind and do not allow the team to disperse.
And yes — counterpicks decide the outcome. Use slow-motion debuffers against high-speed units. On bold and slow ones, add DoT effects, let them fade out gradually. This is not rocket science, but without understanding the basic links, you will simply merge the first battle.
PvE and PvP modes in Xeno Arena: Rewards, ranking, and mutations

In PvE mode (Nexus vs NPCs), everything is simpler: the focus is on raw DPS and AOE abilities. You clear out the crowds, get daily challenges, and for getting into the top 3, you get rare mutations that can’t be found in the open world. Honestly, it’s a good way to level up without the hassle.
Rating seasons: how to get into the top 100 and what they give for it
But PvP is a completely different story. The rating seasons last exactly 4 weeks. Rewards: Exclusive skins and gen mods that no one will sell at the trading station. Top 100? There are already people with rare Xeno-types, biome—specific mutants, who need to be beaten out for hours.
Daily challenges and sparring sessions without risking your ranking
At the same time, don’t ignore the daily challenges in Space Anomaly. You can spar with friends or randomize there, honing your tactics without risking your ranking. And this is perhaps the best way not to be known as the “teamplay” that merges the rating in the very first week of the season.
Is it worth returning to No Man’s Sky for the Xeno Arena
If you haven’t flown into No Man’s Sky for a long time, now is a great reason. XENO ARENA does not redesign the game, but adds to it what was so lacking: meaningful PvE and PvP gameplay with progression and collection. And considering that Hello Games is still releasing updates years after the release, all that remains is to take off your hat.
